Freddie never really said what the song is about, other that it was his love for opera that inspired it. "This is so theatrical" - Freddy's whole life was theatrical. He treated the world like his stage, and he wasn't just a character, he was the lead. Freddy also loved opera, and this song was where he really let that influence come into Queen's music. The song is full of symbolism and elusion, but never really hits the nail on the head. It's done like that on purpose so that it can mean something different to each listener. Is the song about Freddy killing his former self, fearing breaking his mother's heart, and becoming who he really is inside by coming out as gay? Facing the public ridicule and the "trial by press"? I certainly think so, but I can't know for certain; and that's the beauty of it.

I don't know, everyone always says that, but it's not the type of song to really hear in passing, is it? Something like AC/DC's Thunderstruck you can easily hear at a sport event, at a random bar, in an ad, by someone playing it from his car's speakers etc. Bohemian Rhapsody you may hear bits and pieces of, but hearing a full song (if you didn't seek it out just because it's supposed to be one of those classics "you have to hear") is kind of rare, in my opinion. I don't know exactly, but I'd guess it was used a lot in movies, but probably only some segments of it. I get its historical/cultural value, but if you don't particularly care for that and go look it up, I don't think too many young kids will go "listen to this track, it's lit!" to their friends since it has this sort of theatrical/opera/drama sound to it. Personally I don't recall ever hearing it in full until I was like 22-23 and I sort of had to look it up. I do remember something about it (the name, the intro, bits and pieces of the opera part) from my childhood, but it wasn't obvious I knew the artist or the overall theme of the song.

Recommendation: Watch the footage for a Green Day concert in Hyde Park, in 2017, where Bohemian Rhapsody was played as holding music before the concert. Hearing 65,000 people having an impromptu sing-along to a song by a band that isn't even there... it's awe-inspiring. It's such a massive homage to Queen, and such a powerful experience, that Green Day put it on their official channel.

This man’s reaction is the most genuine reaction I’ve ever seen in a reaction video. Queen’s music, at first, is sensory overload. And this is what he’s experiencing. Shit’s too much the first time hearing. He can’t bob to it…not the first time. But he will, the thousandth time, I guarantee it.

Consider Him OVERLOADED..........She has theater background so she flows with the music. He on the other hand seems to try to compartmentalize the experience because for someone that is not expecting ALL of that in one song it may overwhelm you on the first go. Secondly, this song is EPIC. Do you know how tight a band has to be to play this song? Let alone play it at Master level......this IS WHY they are regarded so highly. Excellent singer and band.

It's never been confirmed that is what the song is about but I agree it makes the most sense. Faust is essentially, boiled down to its most basic level, selling your soul to the devil. Hence the lyric Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me. This song will forever be reinterpreted many, many different ways. If you look at it from Lex's viewpoint and any generation not old enough to realize it came out before he showed any signs of HIV/AIDS it can definitely represent that. It's a true masterpiece and sadly no one will ever know 100% what it means. I think that's what makes it the masterpiece it is.
