This song is about being a junkie in LA. The isolation and loneliness of having lost/pushed away all your friends and family and only having the city itself as a companion. Picture Anthony Keadus writing this under a bridge in LA while strung out on heroin and you'll get the vibe.

I’m born and raised there, but I’ve been living down in Mexico for 11 years now. I don’t tell people I’m from the U.S., I tell them I’m from Los Angeles. It’s true that there are a lot of superficial people in L.A., but if that is all that one finds, then they’ve only taken a very superficial look. They didn’t get out of their cars. They stayed in their gated communities and only went to malls. There’s a lot more if you are willing to explore it and feel it.

This song is about heroine addiction. Listen to the chorus. Is where I drew some blood (Under the bridge downtown) I could not get enough (Under the bridge downtown) Forgot about my love (Under the bridge downtown) I gave my life away Yeah, yeah. Its to make sure you hit a vein and not just skin popping so your high is way more intense you get blood both ways but you can apparently tell when you are mainlining I did plenty of dope mostly snorted though shooting is an entirely different high there was one girl I knew very pretty but a junkie but we were friendly and i let her shoot me up about 6 or 7 times and each time it was amazing you feel it in your legs first then bam boy was it hard not to do it all the time.

@basseon

@@amberhoward7807 So you insert the needle in a vein, and you just pull the plunger a little bit (jacking) to make sure you're gonna inject in the vein (you see blood being pumped in the syringe if you're in the vein). So there's no mixing, it's just to make sure you didn't insert the needle through the vein, or not deep enough. If it's not in a vein, there's nothing happening when you pull on the plunger. You can see it in Pulp Fiction when Travolta does it, here at 0.50 : kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3zXdaSQnbafmrc You want to inject in the bloodstream, otherwise it's a waste, you don't get the hit, you loose almost everything.

RHCP's vocalist Anthony Kiedis said he wrote this song as a somber poem reflecting on his heroin addiction while he was clean - this was after his friend Hillel Slovak, the band's early guitarist, died in 1988 from a heroin OD... Ironically, the current guitarist John Frusciante got hooked on heroin after he had quit the band after this record came out in 1991.

This is some of John Frusciante’s best playing. Lots of the runs the Hendrix used (inspired by Curtis Mayfield). But not enough people talking about Flea’s bass. k now you HAVE to react to "TOOL - Ænema" another song about L.A. and just so happens to be one of their most famous songs. Pretty Please!?! I love hearing the perspectives you both have of hating L.A. and it just so happens to be the same perspective as Meynards.

The bridge he is singing about is an actual bridge in Los Angeles he would go under to score herion and shoot up. He refuses to say where the bridge is.

This song has been my favorite since it came out, I now understood listening to Brad how I am truly a plain white boy from Nebraska. Lex has the wonderful soul of understanding life.

One of the songs that got me to like rock as a teenager when all I was listening at that time was hip hop. Now I’m straight metalhead, lol evolution. Also Lex it makes sense that you like classical music because most metal heads like classical as well. And Brad I’m glad you liked the song, it’s definitely a good song that’s a good gateway song into rock.

Anthony lays it all out there. This is what went down and what he came back from. To boil that down and speak it in a song that rises to a place of triumph and honesty is one of hundreds of reasons rhcp are so deserving of the love they get back.
