In 1982, my mother's boyfriend had been drinking, we were there at his trailer, Charles was nice,even when he'd been drinking, he put in. Black Sabbath cassette, we listened to a few songs, his friend Jack pulled up, and sat in his his truck a few moments before getting out, N.I.B came on, terror emerged in Charles eyes, his hands started shaking, he stood up and looked at Jack getting out of his truck, Jack had blood stains on his shirt he was carrying a knife, he'd just killed and skinned a deer, but Charles thought he was there to hurt us, Charles got that huge shot gun, my mother covered my head, and before I knew it, I heard it, then silence , I lost my hearing for three days, the doctor said that a mere gunshot sound wouldn't do that. But something clawed itself in the heart and soul of Charles that day, he pleaded insanity. I've never heard about him again.I can't drive when this song plays, when I listen to it, I don't feel myself. It's an evil covered in beauty.

NIB according to the Wiki, was the tittle bassist Geezer Butler gave to the song, based on the drummer’s beard, calling it Nib. But later on it was used for tribute albums unofficially because of the subject matter as Nativity In Black; check it out: When I wrote N.I.B., I couldn't think of a title for the song, so I just called it Nib, after Bill's beard. To make it more intriguing I put punctuation marks in there to make it N.I.B. By the time it got to America, they translated it to 'Nativity in Black'."
@garmit613 жыл бұрын
That may be what was written in the wiki, but the lyrics are all about the subject being courted by Lucifer so Nativity In Black is probably apt even if the band said it was a reference to Bill’s Beard. Maybe the Wiki isn’t the truth….gasp.

@@garmit61 Bands will often come up with an alternate story for controversial songs for "plausible" deniability" to avoid alienating their more "sensitive" fans. In this song, Satan falls in love with a human woman and tries to seduce her. He turns out to be very charming and the early lyrics are quite poetic. >> The title refers to drummer Bill Ward's beard. The band called him "Nibby" because they thought it looked like the nib on the end of a pen (Ozzy came up with the nickname when he on acid and thought Geezer Butler was turning into a fountain pen). Says Butler: Originally it was Nib, which was Bill's beard. When I wrote N.I.B., I couldn't think of a title for the song, so I just called it Nib, after Bill's beard. To make it more intriguing I put punctuation marks in there to make it N.I.B. By the time it got to America, they translated it to Nativity In Black. >>

Many fans thought the title stood for "Nativity In Black" or "Name In Blood." The bass intro is called "Bassically." It is listed as a separate song on US versions of the album. "Nativity In Black" is the name of two Black Sabbath tribute albums released in 1994 and 2000. Groups contributing to the albums include Megadeth, Godsmack, Biohazzard, and Faith No More. The first Nativity In Black album, released in 1994, contains a cover of this by Ugly Kid Joe. The second, from 2000, contains a version from Primus with Ozzy Osbourne. In November of 1969, Black Sabbath appeared on John Peel's Top Gear radio show, where they played this song along with "Black Sabbath," "Behind the Wall of Sleep," and "Sleeping Village." It was some great early exposure for the band.

So Geezer wrote the song. Someone commented about how it's the Devil falling in love with a woman...Ok 🫢🫢. I could be wrong, but I think N.I.B stands for Nativity In Black. I'm not an expert in this area. The early 70's were a real mess, and Cocain played a huge role. Don't know if I'll ever understand this song completely. Anyway, early Black Sabbath is so Awesome! Well and I have to say, the idea of the Devil falling in love with a woman and becoming good is very bizarre, but original.
@skybluemarshall Жыл бұрын
You are wrong. The band has told the story several times. The title N.I.B. comes from the band's nickname for the drummer. They called him nibby because his pointy beard resembled the tip or nib of a fountain pen. The periods were added to the title later to make it look more interesting in print. The bassist and lyricist Geezer (also a nickname) Butler said that wondered what would happen if Satan fell in love with a woman and how that might change him and make him good. It's similar to some Greek myths where God's would fall in love with humans. The idea of Nativity In Black came from misguided fans who often wrongly believed that Black Sabbath were Satanists. They actually wrote a few Christian based songs to prove that they didn't worship Satan. Furthermore, Nativity In Black makes zero sense. Lucifer, the devil or Satan are Judeo Christian concepts. In Judaism and Christianity, there is no such thing as a Satanic Nativity. God created the devil as an angel and later cast him down to earth after he and 1/3 of the other angels rebelled against God and had a war with the other angels. You can't just take a being from the existing Christian religion, who already has his own creation story and then give him the same birth story as Christ, just because it sounds correct to you. It isn't correct. The Bible is very clear about how Satan came to exist. He was not born in a human body like Jesus. It's just like the concept of selling your soul to the devil. That's not a Christian concept. It's not in the Bible. According to Christianity. Your soul belongs to God and he judges your soul. It's not your soul to sell. You can't just take the devil from Christianity and make him do things that aren't a part of Christianity. You might as well say that Santa Claus attended the birth of Jesus and later sold his soul to the devil to receive his Christmas magic, because that also doesn't appear in any religious text. Simply saying the words, Nativity in Black, doesn't suddenly make it a real thing. It's not a thing. However, Black Sabbath has a good sense of humor. They embrace the stupid, made up, non existent Satanic Nativity concept and as an inside joke for their fans they named two Sabbath tribute albums, Nativity in Black.

@@avocado6394 I always have trouble choosing a bands favourite track but it has to be Black Sabbath. First album , first song. So original and very powerful.

This story actually happened in real life because my wife's sister had to have been seduced by the Devil because her little kid is a demon that could only have been spawned by Satan himself. The kid drives me absolutely crazy at the holiday dinners. Anyways - thanks for your reactions. I love them.

I was playing this album in my bedroom at 14. My dad busted in and heard "my name is Lucifer pleas take my hand." Three weeks later I was enrolled in a Military Academy halfway across the state (Virginia). Yeah, this song brings up a lot of bad memories. In fact, it's the first time I've listened to it since that very night.

Sabbath admittedly saw an opening and took it with scary songs. Surrounded by Hippies, but not feeling the peace, love and happiness, they took their name from a creepy horror movie and cornered the market on scary songs. Worked out pretty well for them.

I saw this band in 71 and of my friends were in to them yet so ,I went alone. The small arena they played was sold out and the floor had fold up chairs set up like they expected everyone to just sit there and listen. That didn't work very well

That bass intro is actually a separate track named "Bassically" that leads into "N.I.B.", much like Van Halen's "Eruption" is separate from "You Really Got Me" and not an intro per se.

When I found out that War Pigs had another name, Luke's Wall, I looked into this. Because the songs were long they could only fit 3 or 4 songs on each side of a record. The record company was worried people wouldn't buy a record that had only 7 or 8 songs on it. So Sabbath just made up some names for certain pieces. The end of War Pigs became Luke's Wall. I'd say that's why the bass intro to N.I.B got it's own name too. I'm pretty sure it was only the American market that they used these extra names for, but it might've been elsewhere too. I grew up in New Zealand and been listening to Sabbath for 40 years and I'd never heard of Luke's Wall or Basically. They were always just War Pigs and N.I.B.

That makes a lot of sense. I've often thought of the arrangement of the album as being similar to the various movements in a suite, the way they're stuck together.
