The Doobie Brothers bring an infectious groove with every song. The bass and drums are just always on, and the rhythm guitar is just icing on the cake. They're one of my guilty pleasures from the 70s era.

Down around the corner Half a mile from here You see them long trains runnin' And you watch them disappear Without love Where would you be now? Without love You know I saw Miss Lucy Down along the tracks She lost her home and her family And she won't be coming back Without love Where would you be right now? Without love Well, the Illinois central And the Southern Central Freight Got to keep on pushin', mama You know they're runnin' late Without love Where would you be now-na-na-now? Without love Well, the Illinois Central And the Southern Central Freight Got to keep on pushin' mama 'Cause you know they're runnin' late Without love Where would you be now? Without love Well, pistons keep on churnin' And the wheels go 'round and 'round And the steel rails are cold and hard On the mountains they go down Without love Where would you be right now? Without love Ooh, where would you be now? Mmm, got to get you, baby, baby, won't you move it down? Won't you move it down? Baby, baby, baby, baby, won't you move it down? When the big train run When the train is movin' on I got to keep on movin' Keep on movin' Won't you keep on movin'? Gonna keep on movin'

This one is really wrapped up in the question "Without love, where would you be now," but apparently the music for this song was already long established and they had been jamming to it at shows, with and without on the spot lyrics. Finally, they decided to write lyrics for it and the train thing was already established so it became like an analogy for the way life keeps on moving like a train. Some songs are like that. They come to be in strange ways.

Doobie Brothers -- great music that crossed genres and broke musical stereo types. They were on the rock stations, the r and b stations, the pop stations, and a lot of people were surprised to find out they were mostly white musicians. They appeared on Soul Train and a sitcom called " that's my mama" which was basically an all black cast that was on television in the mid 1970s. Having a band, any band, perform on a sitcom was unheard of, pretty much but a few shows did around that time to lure viewers and raise ratings.

Indeed, Brad got the meaning with only about a minute of analysis and not hearing most of the lyrics...lol...the whole song is about trains in relation to love, the part about Ms. Lucy, who ended up walking away down the tracks because she lost all her loves. Her love keeps her going but she won't be coming back...unless she can catch a ride on another "Love" train...

One of the things I've always enjoyed about the Doobie Brothers is all the layers of parts going on in their songs. Different instruments, some of which you hardly notice when you hear the overall song, but they all add to the flavor of it, like a good stew. They all blend together to give the song its unique flavor.
