@@vrvaughn in an interview on 60 minutes, Yosef Islam (Cat Stevens) stated that he that Salmon Rushdie was an Infidel, and the 3 million dollar price on his head was appropriate. Cat disappeared from music in the late 70s when he converted to Islam, but reappeared in the late 90s. In later interviews, he has attempted to retract or temper his comments given on 60 minutes. I have heard nothing from Cat about the recent attack on Salmon Rushdie by a an Islamic radical “Hadi Matar”, when Rushdie was stabbed repeatedly, but survived, so Matar will not be able to collect the ransom, which has been in place since 1988, when Rushdie’ book came out…that is why I question the messenger.

On some versions they end quickly and fade out fast. This version seemed to keep it louder a little bit longer. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the beauty of the last few notes. Really ended the song well. I could have used a few more seconds.

...this is the song that put 10,000 Maniacs on the map...but she( Natalie) would not perform it live because of Cat's (Yosef Islam) condemnation of Salmon Rushdie's book " Satanic Versus", and his support of the the 3 million dollar bounty on his (Rushdie's) head. I have seen 10,000 Maniacs several times. When the audience requested "Peace Train", Natalie would say that they have many great songs written by them (her), and she did not want to sing a song written by one that promotes murder for ransom (to paraphrase)....fast forward to 2022, an attempt was made on Rushdie's life last month, he was stabbed repeatedly, but survived...the attacker, will not receive bounty, his name "Hadi Matar"...I will allow you to assess the various ironies for yourself..."PeaceTrain"...please

I wrote the first English speech given by a Sth Korean poltician to other politicians and ambassadors on North Korea, since the war ended many decades ago. That politican ended up being the primary advisor to the President as the North and South leaders finally met several years ago. The entire speech was based around the day a peace train would be rolling from North Korea through China, Russia and beyond. The speech captured what came to my mind as I listened to this song. A great song that provided great imagery for my brain to cling to.

He is a total hypocrite! For all the Cat Steven apologists, this is a verbatim excerpt from the interview where he called for THE DEATH of Salman Rushdie - NOT ONCE BUT TWICE! There can only be three conclusions: 1. The reports are false 2. He is, and always was a hypocrite 3. This is what Islam does to people. On 21 February 1989, Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam addressed students at Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University) in London about his conversion to Islam and was asked about the controversy in the Muslim world and the fatwa calling for Salman Rushdie's execution. He replied, "He must be killed. The Qur'an makes it clear - if someone defames the prophet, then he must die”. Two months later on the Geoffrey Robertson’s Australian TV show he said this: “Robertson: You don't think that this man deserves to die? Y. Islam: Who, Salman Rushdie? Robertson: Yes. Y. Islam: Yes, yes. Robertson: And do you have a duty to be his executioner? Y. Islam: Uh, no, not necessarily, unless we were in an Islamic state and I was ordered by a judge or by the authority to carry out such an act - perhaps, yes. [Some minutes later, Robertson on the subject of a protest where an effigy of the author is to be burned] Robertson: Would you be part of that protest, Yusuf Islam, would you go to a demonstration where you knew that an effigy was going to be burned? Y. Islam: “I WOULD HAVE HOPED IT’D BE THE REAL THING.” الله ليس عظيما

Once a train gets rolling and builds momentum its hard to stop. I think what Cat Stevens was saying/encouraging is if all of us peace loving folks hop on board we can roll over the crooked politicians and criminals and prevail. This song was written prior to his conversion to Islam, and prior to his stated support for the murder of Salmon Rushdie for his book "Satanic Versus" in the late 80s. "Yosef Islam"(Cat Stevens)has of late tempered his remarks made about Rushdie. But in the 1988 ,when the book came out, Cat stated that Ruhdie was an "infidel", and should die..to paraphrase .Perhaps ,Cat should "jump up on the peace train"... a recent attempt was made to kill Rushdie, he was stabbed many times by a radical Islam "Hadi Matar", but Rushdie survived, Matr will not be able to collect the 3 million dollar bounty put on Rushdie back in 88....Cat has not commented , that I know of

You need to listen to the live version of this song ..it's from a concert from back in the 70's. It's a very dynamic performance....maybe on a second-take sometime..that being said this song from his classic album Teaser & The Firecat .. closed the album.. and I can remember the disc jockey's at the time always playing it with all the other peace songs.or anti-war songs in a set list.. Unfortunately, many people don't like Cat or Yusaf because of his political stance on certain people but this man I believe is probably the most insightful singer ( at least British singer) of his time.. .and hope you explore more of him.. great review..

Cat Steven's had a unique tone in his voice. His voice was recognizable right away in a new song.

That percussive clapping reminds me of the sound of a train clattering over the rails. Those of us who remember riding on passenger trains may be familiar with it. Placing this in the song -- genius.

My first car when i turned 16 in 1979 was a 72 Roadrunner. It came with a Cat Stevens tape stuck in the 8 track tape player. So it was Cat Stevens or just the roar of that 440 magnum.

I was a hippie back then and we all believed we were leading the way to something good. A bit naive from today's respective, but definitely hopeful. After all, it was the Age of Aquarius. :-)

A great follow up would be Playing for Change's version of this song. Released on You Tube late last year. Brings it to the world and include Yusuf Cat Stevens.

Boy! Has pop music changed in 50 years! (so has the world) Cat Stevens albums were always very well produced, usually with excellent audio quality. Cat Stevens insisted on it. The proof is the fact that songs like this still hold up today. BTW Brad, your observations are spot on.

Love this, Love this, Love this! Cat Stevens was huge when this came out. His album "Tea for the Tillerman" has great songs. When this came out, (the '70s) the youth thought we really were moving towards this. We had leadership and dedicated people working hard for a better day. There was even an influential group called "Common Cause" (Ralph Nader). He was a corporate and political watchdog and was famous enough that those causes got traction. We had Earth Day and the ERA. There is no way that I would have bet on this current environment being our future. Better for everyone is just better, right? He is excellent. Thanks so much for choosing this one.
