This is from their second album and arguably their biggest and most recognizable hit. But their first four albums were all really good in my opinion. They had a very unique sound mostly due to Art Alexakis. Wonderful, Father of Mine, and I Will Buy You A New Life are some of their other “big” songs. But they have some gems that weren’t played on the radio as well. Definitely a band worth exploring. My personal favorite is Wonderful because the timing of the song and what I was going through meshed really well at the time.

@@BitchinStitches I think Amphetamine may be my favorite off of "So Much for the Afterglow." I don't know. So hard to pick because the whole album was fire. Pretty sure I wore out White Men in Black Suits, One Hit Wonder, and Like a California King. But let's keep it old, old school, and talk about how damn amazing World of Noise and Sparkle and Fade were, too!!

It slipped under the radar a bit at the time (maybe because the band wasn't from Seattle) but the album Sparkle and Fade was one of the best of the 90's ( decade of incredible albums). Every song was powerful. Thanks for reacting to this.

I bought this on cassette in 1996. Still love this tune 🎶 There is a thing called "cowpunk" and I think this song falls into that category. Some of Social Distortion's music from the early 90's falls into that category too. thanks for the memories!

This genre of music is called "Alternative" music. That's why it sounds very similar to Presidents of the USA. You should give the band Better than Ezra a listen. Particularly the song "Good".

This band always reminded me of Social Distortion. Country punk rock (cowpunk). lol. Meat Puppets and Violent Femmes were other bands like them. Great bands. Love the CD scratch, so '90s/'00s.

Saw them in concert in Buffalo a few months before this song was released. They opened for Sponge and came out into the audience and hung out while Sponge played. Got to talk to Art who was pretty cool guy. He asked what we thought of them, if we had even heard of them before, etc. The following year, they came back to Buffalo after this song had broke big and played in a bigger venue - still opening for someone else (I forget who) but they couldn't come out into the crowd afterward as they'd become fairly popular very quick.

@@jefferyparker4277 West coast punk has some country influences, as do Georgia Satellites. They're probably picking up on the guitar tone, particularly in the opening. FTR, I strongly prefer the bands that influenced the bands that influenced Everclear to Everclear. The Cramps, etc.

I coached a softball team 5 years ago. In 2017 we won the league title. A month later, my pitcher Gretta found out she had stage 4 cancer in her spine. She was 12. Gretta fought to live for the next 18 months before passing onto the Great Beyond on 3/19/19. A few weeks before she died, the last time we saw each other, we were on her bed telling stories of the good ol' days. She started this song on her phone, and we sang it together. We Love & Miss You, Gretta Lee.

Love this song so much even though it got played a whole lot. One that I absolutely love but it's kind of dark but is a total Banger is called heroin girl. It's got the most fun sliding power cord guitar riff and the whole thing is just crazy. And Lex you totally noted that vocal effect, it is kind of in the direction of country and even Elvis used it a lot so it's been around a long time and Chris Cornell used it sometimes but I really associated with a stylistic thing from that late 70s punk scene, Like Richard Hell & the voidoids, love comes in spurts. Or probably his most famous song, blank generation. You'll hear that affect all over those recordings. And they are really really fun songs. That late 70s New York punk scene.

You guys are talking about a "country twang," which is more of a bluesy inflection and an alternative to falsetto singing. When it's executed, that voice cracks for a moment, and you feel the vulnerability and sincerity in the vocals. It's done in pop, rock, country, blues - a lot of genres.

That glitch-y sound is what used to happen when people downloaded music tracks illegally through Napster. They were put out by the music labels to try to prevent people from downloading. That was NOT part of the song. :) Always love your reactions! You two are awesome sauce!

First time I heard it, it hit buried emotions in me and I broke down in front of my wife and daughter....so moving a song, you guys should check it out, my favorite ever clear song. My absolute favorite band. Their first few albums when it was Art, Craig Montoya, and Greg Eklund are priceless classics. He produced their first album, World of Noise, in his friend's basement for $400. Check it out. It's amazing. The band wasn't quite the same after Montoya and Eklund left in 2003, but they'll always be my favorite. "Sparkle and Fade" is arguably one of the greatest albums of all time. It's a shame that they were so underrated. Long live the 90s!!!!
