The song is about alcoholism. More specifically, the lead singer (Rivers Cuomo) wrote it about his father and stepfather. His father was an alcoholic, and his parents divorced because of it. One day after coming home from high school, Rivers found a beer bottle in the fridge, and panicked because he was afraid the same thing was going to happen with his stepfather. So the song is about that, but also about how having an alcoholic in the family makes you afraid that everyone else, including yourself, might become one, too.

Yooo, this song is about an alcoholic son of of dad who's also an alcoholic! The guy singing it is in recovery but he keeps fixating on people around his fridge, someone opening a cold beer, then he turns on the tv and he can hear a champagne bubbling up ready to explode. Then in the chorus he's like "I can't believe it, say it ain't so, this booze will break hearts and my love for it will take my life". Then he says he could never confront this disease, so he better stay cool in that situation. Then he says that if he gets even one drink he'll lose everything. So be cool. (I think he's at a party or something?). He then addresses his dad that got clean and found Jesus and all this booze awakens something in him that came from his dad and also his alcoholic stepdad.
@agooglyminotaur1693 жыл бұрын
I've always interpreted a little bit differently - always from the kid's view. Like "wrestle with Jimmy" just sounds like something kids would do. But like his whole live as he's growing up he's always hiding from his dad's alcoholism ("guess I'll just close my eyes") and always worried the "bottle is ready to blow." And as he's growing up, the dad's increasing reliance on alcohol just increases the distance between them. ("This way is a waterslide away from me that takes you further every day...") Either way, heavy song. It sounds so fun the way Weezer does it but the lyrics tell a different story.
@whodafeak3 жыл бұрын
@@agooglyminotaur169 I think the wrestle with Jimmy line is referring to Jim Beam. He name dropped Heineken in the first verse so I always assumed he was doing the same in the second.
@kempwood_foo3 жыл бұрын
Not far off, but Rivers is saying: The heine in the fridge- he opens the fridge and see's a beer. It's giving him chills bc his dad was an alcoholic and his new step dad...is drinking beer too. So he's freaking out that this new dad will be one too. So he closes his eyes to distract. Flip on the tele, wrestle with jimmy- he's watching tv, playing around with his brother and his dad is watching them, while drinking, and Rivers feels like his dad is going to get drunk. SAY IT AINT SO- he's like, please dont say this new dad is like my last dad. Your drug is a heartbreaker, my love is a lifetaker- alcohol his dad drinks is hurting Rivers and Rivers feels that it's his fault both dads drink, now. This way is a water slide away from me That takes you further every day- Rivers is trying to tell his dad that drinking is a slippery slope that pushes then away from eachother. Dear daddy, i write to....- he writes to his real dad who sobered up and found god. This bottle of Steven's awakens ancient feelings, like father, stepfather, the son is drowning in the flood- Rivers' stepdad, Steven, who drinks, reminds Rivers of when his real dad would drink, which Rivers is scared of because it reminds him of how bad his real father used to get. He's telling his dad, both your old drinking habit AND Steven's drinking is causing Rivers to drown in the flood of excessive alcohol. All-in-all, this song is about Rivers trying to cope with both his father's drinking alcohol and it bringing bad memories back for him and he blames himself for both father's having to drink.

This is a song that I felt was written directly for me. You ever have a song like that? My father was absent from my life in my adolescence. He finally started writing me when I was nine and we exchanged letters for a year. In the summer of 88, when I was ten, my Aunt arranged for us to speak on the phone (my mother was adamantly against it). We talked for about an hour, he told me to listen to my mother, we talked about sports, rock n roll, and all that good stuff. We also talked about maybe being able to meet each other as long as my mother was okay with it. One month later my step father was the one to tell me he had passed away from an apparent suicide. The only time I ever saw my father face to face was at his wake. This song hits me so hard in the feels. I love this song.
