Shared consciousness. We are not alone - we are one.
@tristantknight
@tristantknight 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. i've been learning about this lately. we are one. the illusion goes beyond pain though. everything we experience is an illusion. this reality is just a projection of the higher consciousness. sort of like film onto a screen.
@robrobert9541
@robrobert9541 3 жыл бұрын
@@tristantknight I'm not sure if the correct word is "illusion." We are definitely perceiving our reality, such as it is. However, I believe that what we consider to be sacred and most important (our life as a living creature on earth, etc.) is exaggerated when viewed in the greater perspective of our true existence as a shared consciousness. This is just as brief station on our grand journey, and is practically meaningless in the grand scheme of things. I also believe that we dip into and out of this earthly existence many times, over and over again. Some have referred to this as Reincarnation, though it may be a continual process that our shared consciousness engages in over eons.

I’ve always looked at this song as a reminder that this life and everything that comes with it is temporary. Yes, pain is an illusion, but it’s still “real” at the moment. But it’s a reminder during the event that this is temporary. So hold on, get through it, so you can come out the other side. This is probably my favorite from Tool.

Yep. Pain is an indicator of damage to the body. Since the body is NOT who we are, it's not as dire as we are programmed to interpret it. Psychological pain, while more "real" than physical pain, is still an illusion, distracting us from the fleeting but holy experience of being alive. And breathing.
@kdog909
@kdog909 2 жыл бұрын
This song raises more questions than it answers. Why are we here in these bodies? Why should we “hold on” to this reality? What if I don’t like being here? If we are eternal, shouldn’t I just commit suicide and hope that the next phase of existence is better? Etc. Still my favorite Tool song.
@bradprice8040
@bradprice8040 2 жыл бұрын

Hell yeahhh!!! do a lateralus lyric video next ;) "This whole album deals with spiritual enlightenment(with the climax at the end of Reflection). Parabola specifically deals with the illusory nature of the self. "We barely remember who or what came before" -> Our memories are very limited, but they create a story of our "selves" despite that. It's just an illusion, the song tells us to focus on the now(a common theme in spirituality) and that our bodies are just a temporary form of being. The other songs on Lateralus all focus on different aspects of the main spiritual truth that Reflection tries to convey. The Grudge/Schism are about our relationships with other beings and how futile it is to separate ourselves from them. We are, after all, all one mind. The Patient/Ticks and Leeches are about dealing with the struggles that come along the path to spritual enlightenment. The incredible amount of patience it requires, the negative influences from the outside world, etc. Lateralus is about the exploration of ourselves and just the general size and scope of what there is to discover. Many people call Tool hard to understand, but they actually convey very simple messages in their music. That's part of what makes them so great, their universal applicability to almost all situations.

I just wanted to point out that what Brad is describing when he "went through a portal" during his transition from waking state to dreaming state is an actual phenomenon established by sleep science! It is known as the hypnagogic state and it is the moment when awareness of the physical body and environment starts to give way to the imagery and sensations being generated in the brain when you are dreaming. Experienced lucid dreamers actually use this as part of a technique in which they hold onto their consciousness as the body falls asleep so that they can directly transition straight into a lucid dreaming state. Very cool to hear you inadvertently experienced this for yourself! Great reaction video by the way, I love to see the deep philosophical conversations that Tool's music encourages!!

Love to have seen Lex jump and go into hyperspace at the drop. Great interpretation of the song, like people say it is what you take from it. Im the person with cancer that brought this up, what it means to me is "this body holding me is holding my soul" Cancer is very painful so when it says we live eternal (our soul) pain is a illusion. How i look at this song. Great reaction

Awesome reaction guys! Relatively new subscriber here. But, I have to say that although you both do excellent work, Lex's reactions are what mostly keep me glued...love her facial expressions when a beat drops! Not to mention that she almost left her seat...maybe to hyperspace! I'm engrossed in the reality that you two project; it keeps me smiling. I'm so wide eyed and hopeful for your next music reaction! Thanks!

Don't forget to take into account the title of the song. The ups and downs of the music are very much related to the title. Thanks for the reaction as always!

Lex is pretty much spot on with her analysis. I'm disabled and live with chronic pain. I've had 4 back surgeries at 21 and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at 12. Pain is my existence and my existence is pain. I can't work. I'm only 36 years old. This Parabol/Parabola is my absolute FAVORITE Tool song, and I've been a part of the Tool Army since they entered the scene basically, but these two songs have meant so much to me. I'm not religious at all, but to me, we don't remember what it's like before we're born therefore, with that logic, we won't remember/know anything after we die, but we, meaning our essence, our being, is eternal. We will always be. Knowing that this life with all this physical and mental and emotional pain is temporary in the grand scheme of things. It will NOT last forever. It brings me comfort knowing that. We are all connected through the universe with our beings. Our essence. There are theories of a universal consciousness that we might all share among everything in the universe. Nothing is destroyed, just transferred in other things, therefore, again, we are all eternal and this temporary form, this body holding me and the pain involved, is an illusion. A tiny blip of my eternal being. I've said it for years, and I'll keep saying it. If these songs are not played at my funeral, I'm not going. These songs are everything to me, and will forever be everything to me.

This is an incredibly powerful song in regards to one's spirituality and journey. Pain is an illusion. Ever notice how you become stronger when you overcome pain? It's no coincidence that Maynard's own spiritual journey is portrayed here. The entire album is about a journey in spirituality. You gotta hear the whole album and watch the official video to this song when the person realizes his connection to the universe and then reconnects. The symbolism is absolutely beautiful and awe-inspiring.

Great reaction and analysis! 'Pain is an illusion' is a difficult philosophical concept to wrap one's head around. Pain is a concept/label describing a subjective experience. The sensation itself is not 'pain'. Pain is just a word/label we use to describe an experience. The perception and labeling of the raw sensation as pain creates 'pain'. One of the consequences of meditation can be the realization of the nature of pain as being a subjective interpretation of the actual phenomena, or as some people describe it, an illusion of the mind.

"This body Makes me feel Eternal All this pain is an illusion." There's a spiritual concept in the Adviata school Vedanta Hinduism called the Māyā. Lots of interpretations of what the Māyā is and what it represents, but almost all refer to it as the magic power with which a god can make human beings believe in what turns out to be an illusion and all the pain and suffering of our mortal lives is nothing more than this illusion. This song is so heavy on spirituality and the concepts of reincarnation that I can't help but think about that when I hear it. Awesome reaction. Thanks for sharing it.

Spiritually and reincarnation are what I’ve always thought this song is about. It’s like he’s pointing out that this time before we go into the bardo is precious, but takes comfort in knowing it’s a cycle.

Honestly, I’ve never heard that take about disease. I don’t see it that way, but these songs are meant to be taken in the context of the listener. For me, it’s about the choice of being me in my moment and understanding that my current form is temporary and will change in the next moment.

"This body holding me, all this pain is an illusion. I think they may have related it to disease in that the body grows, and breaks down. Disease, wear and tear, is always prevalent, but we all experience it differently. I always interpreted the song as though it was about live with what you have, and give your best to live as good as you can, and push through. But i can understand the other ways people see it.

She understands this song to a point, life is an experience and it only last a short time.. But like a stong phycadelic trip will show you when you leave this body, your pure consciousness and that consciousness is all and everything and everyone you've lived all lives at all times all instantaneously time and separation is all an illusion.

The entire song is actually called parabol/parabola. When it goes and switches up is where it goes to parabola from parabol. It's such a deep and good song!!! If these lyrics don't get you to think you may not have a soul. She's on point when she talk about it sending you to another place especially on a psychedelic. I've listened to them on shrooms, acid, and then on DMT. Each time it was an out of body experience. I saw them live when they came out with Lateralus around 2001-2002 when I was like 16 and took 5 hits of acid before I got to the show. They had like little hologram dudes walking around the stage and had like a light show the entire time and ultimately it completely changed my life. It opened my mind to so many knew things. I learned to listen an appreciate any type of music that I heard even if it wasn't rock or metal like used to only listen to.

Dang I love your reactions. Brad you were so philosophical with 46 & 2, what happened ? Lex you're on the right track. You guys missed the ending, zooming in the droplet of water; a microcosm of the universe. I believe the song is about spiritual pain (depression, loneliness, hopelessness etc). The past is pain and the future is fear. The solution is consciousness, meditation and being in the now. The secret is staying in the present. We are not our thoughts, we are not the body that holds us. We are the energy that emanates from the soul or spirit, the body is just holding that spirit. To be grateful, to be in the moment. We are eternal. Reminds me of what Eckhart Tolle writes about.

I think Parabol is like a reference to how a child would feel being born into this world, going from the warmth, safety and comfort of their mother's body would be confusing, painful and then finally "wide eyed and hopeful". And then Parabola is actual birth, bursting into existence in this chaotic moment and also, depending on your willingness to believe in the rebirth, choosing to leave the confines of you body, leaving the safe and known and venture into the unknown, the higher consciousness.
