The thing is he was never a coward. He just never did anything when people called him a coward. He just turned the other cheek. Honoring his dead father's final advice. But when somebody messed with his girl, he did what he had to do. Showing that you cant always turn the other cheek.

Indeed, he wasn't a coward. He was keeping a promise. "Please don't think I'm weak i didn't turn the other cheek" says it all. Not many people are strong enough to turn the other cheek.

This song is good and yes its about sometimes you have to fight to be a man and he stepped up when his moment came, we understood the story and how he had to become a man and do what he had to do, to protect his family . This song was such a hit and everyone loved it and the meaning of the song about him and his father too , trying to please his father but then there comes time a man has to step up , whether you want to or not. It was played constantly because no body thought too much on the story but the meaning

What I like is that the opening and closing lines are identical but use the word "considered" in two ways. In the song's opening, "considered" from the perspective of county residents is meant as "how he is" while at the end it describes "how he was". Great lyric writing.

This thing is played out again over and over and over in country music particularly although in other genres of music to a degree. It's a classic story and it's not modern enough to be ironic and have a dark ending so in the end it's a pretty uplifting story that we can all easily relate to. But it fits so well with the music and vice versa.

I actually read about that not too long ago. Larry's mom called him and told him there was a horrible song about them. He did actually talk to Kenny about it and Kenny said he didn't write the song. While that's true, I really think they could have used a different name, especially since there were 3 Gatlin Brothers.

this song is from 1978 and when things like this happened the cops could be called but usually the guilty parties would get away with it by saying something like " She is only saying that because of her man" , or "she wanted it ". and Tommy did not kill them, he just gave into his temper because his woman was attacked . The song says " not a Gatlin boy was standing " it does not say " not a Gatlin boy was breathing" He stood up for his woman , he did not care what was said or done to him but she was the love of his life .

Kenny Rogers wrote some of the best country ballads of his generation. He did some phenomenal songwriting (and he's an utterly unique vocalist). Singing songs like "Lady" and the many pop duets in the 80s made him a shit ton of money, but it killed his country cred and he was reduced to being a phone sex-addicted lounge act in the 90s. He eventually tried going back to his country ballad roots (again, writing excellent stuff), but sadly, few people bought it.

I’m not sure of the order but there’s this song and there’s a movie of the same name. The movie takes place in the south in what I always thought was the late thirties, early forties. The reason Tommy’s daddy died in prison is because I do believe he killed a man in a fight.

This is a great song! The story of the song is great, but a lot of reactors don’t “get it”. Interestingly, the brothers that raped Becky could have been anyone- the smith brothers or the Jones boys, whatever, but the song was written with the name “Gatlin” brothers as a reference to Kenny Rogers long standing feud with Larry Gatlin & his two brothers. They had some great songs too, but if I had to choose a side for that feud, I’m team Kenny!

The thing is - the story is relatable - not necessarily to that degree - but as a man myself the hope is at least for a civilized society that we keep our 'monster' side in check (as Jordan Peterson tries to tell us), but there comes a time when even the most civilized man must let the monster out to defend his freedom or those he loves. Tommy wouldn't allow himself to be an alpha-predator like the Gatlin boys that likely was a similar issue for his father, but when he needed to, he reminded them of their place. It's also a story set in the old-west times - so "civilized" was a little different than our standards now.

This song isn't about gang rape. This is a song about being a man. Don't get into fights, stay clear of them, unless you have no other choice, or someone really needs to learn a lesson. There is times to fight and times to not. The fighting his father did, was not the right time to fight. Fighting for your woman, is noble. That is why people listen to it. It's not a sad song. It's only sad if you only pay attention to the second act.

@@glassontherocks What? The core of the store was not about that. The core of the story is in the CHORUS, which is about knowing when to fight and when not to fight. That is the premise of the song. The gang rape could have been anything to that extreme, that wasn't the most important part. The important part was to know when to fight and when not to fight. And, if you can't see that, and since you attacked me for no reason. I can only assume that you are what you claim me to be.
