I have one without the gold stripes. It is completely stock with 6L6g ( coke bottle ) RCA tubes a pair of 6sJ7s and a 5Y3. My amp has a field coil rola speaker and only a volume & tone knob . I cant find much info on mine but it is a sweet and very very clean little amp that sounds great but I cant trust any of the Planet caps as they only had a 1 year warranty hahaha , so a tune up is definitely in the works. Thanks for a great video !

Hi Brad, Nice old amp, thanks for the tour and demo. It's my opinion that the 6SJ7 Pentode pre amp tube is what accounts for the excellent tone. The Fender Champ model 5C1 uses the 6SJ7 also. Love those single ended amps. The Gibson BR-9 has two 6V6's in Parallel, which I think is more like a single ended as opposed to push/pull, I could be wrong. I have plans to build both a 5F1 and a 5C1 as time and money permit. Hope all is good with you and yours. Be good, C.

I wonder just how similar a 6AU6 is to a 6SJ7 or 6SK7. I've been slowly putting an amp head together which uses one in the input and a 6CZ5 as the power tube, which is a tube similar to the 6973 used as an audio output tube in TV receivers. The rectifier will be a 6202, which is a rugged 6X4 variant for aircraft use rated to 70mA plate current and with separate cathodes to eliminate problems associated with shorting. The reason I chose this tube over a 6X4 is that I have a good one lying around and it doesn't have the issues with shorting associated with 6X4 or 6X5 tubes.

Does adding a three prong grounded plug take any of the tone away while it's helping not kill you? I may be willing to take some chances in the studio for perfect tone. 😁

Gorgeous tone. Similar to tweed tone but creamy smooth breakup. An improvement in my opinion.

Hey Brad, great video nice demo of the amp. I have the same amplifier and was just wondering what additional components did you add or upgrade to, to give this a little more low-end and to make it may be a little louder, at full volume it sounds pretty good it seems like it could be a little louder but I'm not sure I don't have another one to compare it to but mine does sound pretty good and I guess there's no way of locating and original schematic for this amplifier or at least I have not found one yet, but if you can list any of the changes that you made to improve the sound let me know if you get a chance, I know you're busy. Thanks once again.

Did you get any info on this build ? I also have one of these and will be replacing the electrolytic caps and doing a 3 wire plug . It currently works .Did a brief test the other day since it hasn't been cranked it up since the mid 90's . Everything is all original currently.

I just got a montgomery ward 35JDR8417, it looks alot like this. I haven't been able to find much about it online. It is chassis marked to use 5Y3GT, 6V6GT, 6SJ7. The chassis is nearly identical to yours, but it's on the bottom of the cabinet. On, off, volume and tone only. I don't know what year it is. But I suspect it's 1953 or 54? The speaker has a round seal over the voice coil. Probably original. Any info or way I could get some would be HUGELY appreciated! Tubes light up, and sound thru the speaker but I haven't plugged a git into it yet. I just got it. For ten bucks! Thanks!
