The reason Aussies call flip flops thongs, is cos the bit on flip flops that goes between your toes is actually called a thong.

And that's why we in the UK think Aussies are "so thong, but so right"

My Yorkshire accent can get me in trouble when working with US folk. We normally shorten words like "Wouldn't, shouldn't, Couldn't" down and they end up pronounced as "Wunt, shunt and Cu*t". I have to be very careful when saying "you couldn't" to anyone outside of Yorkshire.

Very good. There are a couple of real bits of cockney rhyming slang such as Barnet (fair) for hair and syrup (of fig) for wig. Loved the reaction. Funny you said going oot for out and hise for house. Guess that's the Canadian accent.

They're still flip flops in the UK. If you missed the bit with the 'syrup' it's short for syrup of figs=wigs. Barnet is hair.

Here in Australia "root" means something different too. In the US and Canadia you "root" for your team. In Australia if you "root" for your team you have somewhat slippery morals!

As an American living in Australia, it took numerous strange looks when I would say "I'm rooting for St. Kilda" before a colleague explained the Aussie meaning of the term. Not to be put off engaging in the unique sport of AFL, I switched words and started saying "In the Grand Final I'm pulling for Geelong." I'm sure you understand why that didn't help!

Flip flops in uk as well but lived in aussie as a kid definitely thongs there.
@daveofyorkshire3012 жыл бұрын
In the UK flip-flops are any footwear that are supported by a strap at the front but with no back - so they make the flip-flop noise. They don't have to go through your toes, I've never worn that style of flip-flop. I suppose you call them sandals then? In the UK a sandal would have a back to it. In the UK a sandal is any shoe (with a back) where a substantial amount is missing leaving the foot open. So a sandal becomes a flip-flop when there is no back to it.
@bradlucy2 жыл бұрын
Yes, sandals have the strap around the ankle. flip flops have no back. However, you can get a hybrid version with a sandal strap at the front and nothing on the back. Then I don't have to split my toes 😁

I sympathise with Brad ,I can't wear flip flops due to having foot abnormalities too. my big toes are set too far apart from my second toes and my second toe is the same length as my little toes on both feet,so it can't grip the flipflop correctly. How ever after breaking my left foot 13 years ago by big toe shifted ( it set badly) so I could wear a flipflop on one foot. It's not so sad though as I have hobbit feet so it's probably for the best .

Accents can be very confusing. I remember a man from Barnsley in the UK, where they have some very odd pronunciations themselves, saying he'd met a woman from Sheiffield, which is pretty close, geographically, but who have some different ways of pronouncing words. She said "I've had new windows put in my house." Only the way she said it, it sounded more like arse, the way Micky was saying it in this clip. Which conjured up quite an image.
