Heh, from about the age of 10-12, I was my grandmas go-to-person to do her home perm. She had the classic grandma short fluff, which she rolled and dried every time she washed it. I got quite good with those rods over the years, and the big rollers too. It was a real nice time to spend with her, and she always praised me when I got it how she wanted it. Sure miss her, it'll be two years since she passed this summer. She would have turned 99 a couple of days ago.

Haha, when I was 13-14 we had to have work practice for a week in school. And I managed to get a place at a hairsaloon, more oriented in older people. There was alot of perms going on, and I think during that week the hairdresser let me pern like 10 people haha. Looking back though he knew how to do it, and I learned it the correct way. He also let me cut peoples hair. Haha but Im a bit of a natural luckily. I guess he saw it.

Hi Brad!!! I’ve been a hairdresser for 37 years now. Perms are my favorite things to do. I’m an older hairdresser with older clients and I think I do a killer perm!!! This new hair coloring stuff scares the crud out of me. Rainbow, balayage, things like that. I do great highlights, but the fancy schmancy stuff, I’ve never learned or had the opportunity to try. I’m having trouble picturing rainbow hair on my 80 year olds!😂😂😂 I greatly admire you and your skills! I’m very happy where I’m at as far as my clientele goes, but I miss my younger days, when I too enjoyed all the fancy popular new concepts. You are very right when you said to find someone who knows what they are doing in regards to perms. You can always redo, or color over color that isn’t right. Can’t reperm hair that came out wrong. Unless it simply didn’t take, and then you still need to be very cautious. I enjoy watching your videos. You are always very respectful of the people you are watching. So that’s why my “beach wave perm” ended up terrible. The lady handed me a brush and hair dryer without a diffuser and told me to dry my hair myself. Then when I asked why my hair didn’t look like I expected when I was done and she just said “because you blow dried it wrong” I basically paid for her to make my hair extra frizzy for a few weeks.

My mom was a hairdresser when she was in her 20s but hadn't practiced since then (she was about 45 when this occurred). Being short on funds, I asked her to freshen up my spiral perm and trim my layers. I should have known something was wrong when I saw the small rollers she was using. When she was done and I saw my hair I just started crying. I looked like a poodle. The layers were......I don't even know how to best describe it......I had wings about 3" from my scalp then just blunt horizontal rows all the way down. I went to a professional in hopes of some sort of repair. After explaining what happened the hairdresser asked me "does your mom hate you?" 🤣😂🤣😂

My mom’s was a hairdresser before I was born and again a about six years ago, she was known for long-haired perms (like past the butt long hair) and people drove for ages to see her (she told me about one client who drove for 6 hours). If I was ever to get a perm (which maybe I shouldn’t since my hair is pretty wavy by itself) I would have my mom do it. But I’m so sorry your mom made you into a poodle!

I have had two perms in my life. The first one was PERFECT and the lady that did mine was known as the perm queen. The second one I got done at a really expensive salon and the lady BRUSHED MY PERM AND I WAS SO SCARED TO SAY ANYTHING BUT SHE WAS LITERALLY RIPPING THROUGH MY HAIR. I bawled right after the appointment and ended up having to get a pixie cut bc my hair was literally just frizz. All in all, if you decide to get a perm just call them and ask what their procedure is and please say something if they dare try to brush or comb your hair.

I used to perm my hair about ever 9 months when I was in college. I love curls. Until one day I went to a different salon recommended to me by a friend who would get strait hair perms there. I don't know what was with the hairdresser who did my hair but it took her well over twice as long than any perm I've ever had before. She seemed to be working on several clients at a time. Perming my hair, coloring another woman's hair, and cutting a third client's hair. She missed several spots and when I pointed out to her that some sections of my head didn't have curlers she'd just say. "It's supposed to be like that" before walking off to check on another clients hair. When she was finished she absolutely fried it some sections while others had no curl to them what so ever. The worst part was she was going to brush it out when she was finished until I told her no. It was the only time in my life I ever pulled a Karen and asked to see the manager. They redid the spots she missed no extra charge for my troubles but after that I didn't do anything to my hair for two years. No coloring, no chemicals, not even using heat to dry it. I havn't had a perm since. I still love curls, but now I take night showers and go to sleep with foam curlers instead so I can just wake up in the morning and take them out. I look like a 1950's housewife when I'm getting ready for bed but at least getting ready in the morning doesn't take long.

I’m so sorry you had that experience. 😭 When I used to get straight perms, they would always put it on my already processed hair and new growth and my hair never grew past my shoulders. I also ask another stylist one time if I could have a curly perm. I had no idea I couldn’t do that on top of already processed hair but the idiot did it anyway without telling me that and refusing to do it. I wouldn’t have been mad. It’s all about the money with some of these hair stylists. I can’t stand going to hair salons. I’ve been natural for 9 years and only do my hair myself. If I’m going to do something risky with my hair, I’d rather do it myself than pay a so called pro to screw it up.

I have done a LOT of perms in my life. We often rinsed spiral perms with the client laying forward as it was extremely uncomfortable (or even painful) for them to lay back on the rods. It also allows for the rods near the neck to be rinsed well.
