My immediate thought (and I've seen lots of other people agree) is that it wouldn't have fit into Inside because he was trying to portray being totally alone. It doesn't fit the theme at all, it's more like a Make Happy type song. As an aside I have to say I always enjoy hearing the clip of Kingdom of Me, such a good song.

Agreed. It wouldn't have fit with the theme of isolation and having to resort to technology to talk to our loved ones, like we see in Sexting. If this song was actually written for his 5th anniversary, that would have been closer to Make Happy. I bet he wrote it then and just decided to do something with it finally when he started working on Inside.

I thought thatv 5 years should have been included in inside as well until I rewatched the outtakes a second time and realized it fits great in terms of musicality but not in theme. the whole ambiance behind everything in inside is the loneliness and isolation that so many people, especially those who live alone, went through during covid. 5 years doesn't really fit that. as good as the song is, it isn't lonely or isolated like everything else that made it into inside was.

This is already 1 of my fave songs from him! It totally captures the inevitable quirks revealed during cohabitation. After the honeymoon phase, you start seeing the real deal. Most of us can relate to occasionally getting irked about sharing food ("you owe me a dumpling or a dumpling equivalent") & seeing our partner's gender role expectations ("everyone's a feminist until there is a spider around") 😄

I think story arc-wise he was either going to be able to have "sexting" or "5 Years" in Inside but not both. One is about dating and being intimate via the digital space while the other is about the mundanity that comes with a long term relationship. The first fit the themes of Inside better, so I can see why he went with that one instead. I do love all the new songs from the Outakes, though. I'm so glad he found a way to share them still.

My theory as to why this song didn't make the cut for Inside is that it doesn't really have the same feel or theme of isolation, boredom, and everything else associated with the lockdowns, which is what Inside was primarily about.

I think the reason this one didn't make the cut is that Inside is all about the isolation of lockdown. The loneliness. The only way connect to someone is by screen (like facetime with my mom). While this song is about two people who love and live together and the ordinariness of that.
