I think there's room for Ultron to embrace the twins despite hating humanity, but it probably would have required introducing the concept of x-men mutants ahead of time, have him embrace the mutants as an untested, hopefully upgraded form of humanity only for him to be betrayed when the twins opt to side with humanity instead of him. Have it be what brings him down, as it would be a purely emotional reaction and make no logical sense, so the robotic Ultron wouldn't be able to understand or fathom them doing it in the first place. In the comics, Ultron is actually quite expressive for an AI, despite his never-changing face in the comics. The difference is that comic Ultron is... unstable to put it lightly. He is incredibly spiteful and holds a burning hatred towards his "father" Hank Pym. He literally tried to kill Hank the moment he gained sentience, which was probably the moment Hank realized creating an AI based on his brain while he was having a mental breakdown and being mentally ill might not have been a good idea. Comic Ultron can't go a day without killing something. He literally killed himself one time just by reading the phrase "thou shalt not kill". Yeah, he's THAT obsessed with murder. He fused himself with Hank and decided to go on a killing spree just because he wanted to. Ultron also murdered a woman right in front of her teenage son. By the way, said kid was also his son through being infused with Ultron cybernetics. And he said to his son that it was fine because his mother was a "degenerate and a criminal", as if that justifies vaporizing her in front of their own child. What great parenting. There was also that time where he dressed up as Santa Claus to kill the Avengers on Christmas. Yes, that actually happened. And that time Ultron became an alcoholic. Yeah he had some weird... phases. Not to mention, his ai is based on a human brain. It would make sense for him to act somewhat human. Which just makes him hate humanity and organic life even more.

They blew their wad with Thanos too early imo. They have so many avengers level threats that they had to relegate to a single film an underdevelop them because they promised thanos from the beginning. IMO Phase 1 should’ve entirely focused on Loki - Phase 2 Ultron for real (Hank Pym should’ve been the active ant man and his arc with Ultron should’ve been adapted.) - Phase 3 you can bring in Ronin the Accuser - actually make him interesting - and use him to lead into thanos for phase 4. Phase 5 should have been used to set Thor up as our new number 1 and Gorr should’ve been the main threat. Phase 6 you can start to introduce Doom and the Fantastic 4 after a major event where Gorr cleans out the rest of the old cast and go from there with the mutants. They fucked it from the start but hindsight is 20/20.

I think mirror villains are good sequel villains, but don’t really work in a movie that introduces your characters. If you start with a villain different than your character, you can effectively establish their strengths and weaknesses. Mirror match villains work for sequels because it can put the hero in a situation where they don’t have their major advantages and have to resort to using their powers or tools more cleverly than the villain, which can carry over to their next adventure where they use those skills. Like if you have the Flash face Captain cold in one movie, he’s facing someone who has a gadget that counters his powers well. If he faces Reverse Flash or Zoom next, he’ll have to find ways to be a more effective speedster and grow in his skills in a way that makes sense. Then he’s more prepared to fight a grander flash villain like Gorilla Grodd or aid in a Justice League level threat like Brainiac.
@Jamushu Жыл бұрын
Sometimes I think those who came after Iron Man 1 relied *_TOO HEAVILY_* on copying it. The biggest reason Obadiah worked as a Mirror Villain is because he perfectly represented everything that Tony had become up until being kidnapped. He represented what Stark Industries *_used to be_* and played the resistance to change perfectly. Stopping Obadiah was the same as stopping Stark Industries continuing as a War-For-Profit Company. *_It was Tony killing off the man he was for good._* Doing it in the first movie made the most sense. Another reason to add why Mirror Villains don't work this early is because *_"This could be You."_* doesn't really work when we're still learning who you are. MV's are supposed to put Us and the Hero in a State of Conflict. They exist to make us question everything we've done and if we're doing the right thing. They show us how one decision changes everything, and we get to see the results of those *_"What-If's"_* and that doesn't really work if you do it at the same time we're learning who the Hero is. Ironically, Iron Man in Civil War was a better example of a *_"Mirror Villain"_* and he wasn't even one.

The MCU and the way movies and Hollywood work in general make building a shared Marvel universe with villains running around pretty much impossible unless they'd be willing to constantly recast different actors as the same characters. I know Disney has bottomless pits of money but when you hire a pretty big name actor to play your villain in almost every movie there's no way they're going to stick around for a dozen movies across a decade or two. Their only options are to either kill off the villains after 1 movie or recast them if they show up 15 movies and 7 years later. I hardly feel like the MCU is a shared setting. The majority of villains just end up dead so what's the point. The MCU is pretty much the story of the Avengers cutting through Marvel's roster of villains one after another. It's kind of lame knowing any villain you like is just going to get killed in the movie they appear in and never show up again. Malekith got 1 chance and it sucked. Same with Gorr and Iron Monger and Ultron and many others and they blew it. Overall I feel like the MCU is a hollow, soulless shell of 616. It could have been better.

I think the problem with these MCU movies is that they aren't made for fans of the original comics, they're made for the mainstream crowd. As such, they basically care more about getting recognizable figures out there than actually adapting them well, leading to less recognizable villians not appearing, and the villians that do show up to be inferior, mainstream versions of themselves to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Agreed - there's nothing wrong with changing villains to suit your movie, so long as they remain true to the overall spirit of the original. They don't have to be the definitive version of their characters, just a satisfying variation. My benchmark for this tends to be the villains from the Burton Batman movies - they're all of them recognizably VERSIONS of their original selves, even though some of the details have changed considerably. Nicholson's Joker is still a cackling, egotistical, murderous lunatic with a clown/playing card motif; DeVito's Penguin is still a top-hatted, pudgy little gangster with aristocratic pretensions and a thing for birds and weaponized umbrellas, and Pfeiffer's Catwoman is still a slinky, athletic, feline-themed crook/antihero with a romantic interest in the hero. None of them are straightforward adaptations of the original characters, but they don't NEED to be; they're convincing enough as alternate versions of them. Not so with the MCU villains - most of them are pretty much name-only, and are tailored strictly to fit the needs of the movies/shows they appear in, instead of to give the heroes a genuinely interesting opponent. I can think of like four, maybe five of them who've really worked for me so far, and that's not good, considering we're talking about the biggest franchise in movie history.

And Disney should consider themselves lucky I live thousands of miles away from them... At least for now... I've made so many comics modernizing the OG (in the technology not the story, don't be frightened, we all know what modernizing the story means in this day and age), coherently retelling the prequels to be more understandable and connecting the animations to it in it's proper places and oh boy when it comes to the sequels, I've rewritten it using their characters and plots, using only their characters and using the right characters and also made comics for other people's rewrites but it's not going away... The taste, is still there, to haunt my soul forever and beat the dead horse that is my childhood for ever existing in the first place... And it's because of those idiots who say adaptations should be way different from it source material which is generally wrong, very very wrong in modern days and completely misunderstood by the modern writers... Generally wrong because the best adaptations are always those who follow the source material and you can only mention a few good adaptations that doesn't follow the source material... Anime is kicking the west add for following the source materials and when they don't, they become the most hated things in the world called fillers and have you heard the take of the two Tokyo ghouls, the anime was shite for not following the source material and only got good when it followed the source material... Game of thrones got bad when it ran out of source material and was saved by house of dragons because it follows it source material... The lord of the rings is one of the most perfect set of movies if not the most perfect and that's because it followed the source material and the hobbits are hated for adding a whole lot of extras to it source material... Same thing for superhero stories... So when are we going to call out the fact that the best way to adapt is to closely follow the source material... The reason for this is because the authors of comics and novels and sn original movie had spent years thinking of it and building the world and the characters and the writer knows the themes that the audience loved about it and kept them there for a reason after thinking about it for a long time and finding nuances so it doesn't become preachy... But the adaptation or continuation in the case of movie franchises are just done by a bunch of writers who couldn't make anything original on their own, all have different ways they see the story and might not be fans of it or might prefer or agree with the villain (which is basically most of the modern writers) and they have a very brief deadline and a producer that knows nothing about writing and wants space for visual spectacles as well as interferences from the studio itself adding their own agenda and profit mongering cliche formulas and quotas to the story, my god that's a country of cooks spoiling the teacup of broth... How do you expect anyone to come up with something better than the original author??? It's not possible... And the people who prefer this provably false method are saying this because they haven't read the source material and don't want to seem less than the fans or as normies for only preferring to engage in a media if it is made in live action as if that's a bad thing to be such a person or they don't care about someone else's hardwork and the fans who made that hardwork popular enough to be adapted for them to see because to them, only their selfish pleasure matters... I'm not talking about critics who already know the source materials are better but choose to critic the movie only as a movie to give it a chance, I'm talking about the rest... And because they don't think, they consider the fact if the source material is that popular, why not adapt that source material??? The fans don't want to see anything else than the source material in a new medium not a new interpretation, and the non fans don't even know the source material to tell the difference so why not just please everyone and adapt the real deal and be as faithful as possible, you're not losing in anyway... But it is narcissism... The proponent of this method don't know they caused the rot of the industry by encouraging and requesting for the writer's narcissism... They think they can do better in a shorter amount of time or that their own gripes with the story should be the only one that matters no matter how unique it is to only them... Do this method doesn't work in this modern age and yet, these selfish critics who don't want to research about the story or be corrected want everyone to be on their level in the knowledge about the movie or are too selfish to consider anything but their own entertainment are the ones demanding for adaptations in this manner, further justifying Hollywood's desecration of source materials because these guys think they would eventually get it right some how... They ask for a new spin for source materials they no nothing about because who cares about the hardwork kept in the story by the author, they only need his fans and brand recognition so let's steal his IP by deceiving him with fake promises they would never keep and ignore the fans that brought the story to their attention and was the reason they bought the IP and they need for their adaptation to be successful, if they try to leave, we would call them toxic and some overused word for one discrimination or the other and some moronic critics keep complaining about the product unaware that they are the ones asking for more by saying they don't care about the source material so they are getting what they asked for... But to be fair to them, modern writers have completely misunderstood them and taken a different spin to a whole different level and choose to make stories that only themselves would like and no one else because if you give them an inch, they would take a light year so we can't trust them to make a different spin to the source materials because they would take liberty for freedom and freedom for self centeredness... There's literally no reason to stray from the source material even in sequels, use what you already have to make a new story, just change up the characters and their personalities and then the plot and then redo the original again with new characters and a new plot and new stakes... How hard is that??? Don't change the settings or the themes or the power system, my god don't even add to it... At the very best, derive from it and don't create something entirely new like the effing snail bombers in the last Jedi and the entire Rey Kylo force dynamic in the sequels... You would get all the fans, the normies who haven't interacted with the source material won't know what the story is about so to them, it might as well be a new spin, you would get profit from a bigger returns than the source material got because of new fans, normies and live action movies being more profitable than other mediums and people would be open to spin-offs or keep rewatching the movies like they reread the books... My god, there's nothing to lose... The only two reasons for ignoring the source material are narcissism and politics but then again, I repeat myself...

I can actually provide a good reason for "I am you but evil" villians in the origin story of many superheros. Since it is the origin story we spend a lot of time establishing exactly what the hero can and can't do. A majority of the run time, in fact. So the villian having the same powers saves us screen time and allows us to see how far our hero has come in understanding their own abilities because they're typically "the same but evil and more powerful" consider that Iron man beat Obadiah because he solved the icing problem and Stain didn't. After the first movie the "I'm you but" villian becomes redundant and could only be used as a bit of fanservice, the villian can show how powerful our hero is when he isnt bound by morality and heroics. Examples like Zod, Venom, and Owl Man.

The sad thing is they could have brought back Baron Zemo as a part of Endgame. Instead of giving us a crappy Captain Marvel film they could have done Thunderbolts and done the plot from their maxi-series. It was perfectly set up with Thanos snapping away half the population. The world needs heroes and out of nowhere this new team appears. They help defeat Thanos, but the big surprise for casuals is that they are really all supervillains that reveal their true plan in an Avengers/Thunderbolts team up movie. As for how they could have used MODOK, they had everything laid out for them in the comics and established in the films. Instead of doing WandaVision they should have made an Avengers West Coast movie. All the team was already introduced and they could have adapted the Vision Quest story. Have AIM steal Vision's corpse and have MODOK premiere as the villain in it. AWC2 would introduce Wanda's children and part 3 would reveal the truth that they were really pieces of Mephisto and Scarlet Witch would then go insane, so the teams have 2 problems to deal with.

Something I want to mention about Vision: Age of Ultron uses Jarvis as the basis for what he becomes in these films, so in a way, we've spent time with Vision over multiple movies because they are implied to be the same guy. However, this also makes his development merely implied in subtext (Him experiencing everything unfold in the MCU and assisting Iron Man) rather than being far less vague and ambiguous thus far more powerful for the audience if we actually got it brought up at all, especially because of the wishy washy way they handled him becoming "a new thing" when he clearly IS supposed to be Jarvis given life by the Infinity Stone and not giving it attention ever again. They don't do anything with this subtext to justify this decision and while understandable if you got that, it's stuck in the middle of two ideas, "Explore Jarvis being given life" and "Explore the newly born Vision being brought into this world", without committing to either. We even skip doing stuff like this between this movie and Civil War. He's just born a good guy. It's a shame because before his death, there was a lot of room to write something much more tight if given the chance in hindsight, possible even taking advantage on the comic counterpart's' best traits.

I have been saying this for years. The MCU successful as it was is still overly comedic to the point where it subverts expectations in a bad way. For example, Nick Fury saying "Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye" only for that to be a alien cat in a comedic fashion. Granted, I would have liked for that not be showed and up for imagination. MCU uses comedy to subvert (undermine) a potentially compelling story. Oh well, the films printed money which is all they care about. Lucky for me, I still read the comics and stop expecting anything out of the MCU. Money talks I guess.

Another reason I think Ultron is the best comic book movie villain is that he's completely unstoppable until the Avenger all face, reflect on and ultimately overcome the resentment that was holding them back. When Vision lifts Mjolnir, it symbolises that the Avengers have grown into something worthy of taking down Ultron and everything he stands for. When the Avengers fight Ultron the first time, they're figthing to preserve the status quo, when they fight him in the third act, they're fighting to protect and inspire humanity.

09:38 The Avengers point out Ultron's contradicting nature. They question why he chose a human form when it wasnt the most functional, they questioned why he didnt assimilate jarvis but instead tore him apart, and of course, the fact that ultron wanted to save the world by destroying it and forcing humanity to evolve from the ash-heap. Joss said ultron wasnt a being of logic, he was a deeply disturbed, emotional robot. 11:21 ultron is linked to Thanos' arc. Tony had a vision of the avengers losing badly (by thanos' hand) so he went too far to try and create the 'suit of armour around the world'. if it werent for the cosmic threat , tony wouldnt have decided to risk using the mind stone to fast-track Ultron's creation. 12:10 Darren cross yellow jacket, I dont mind superheroes facing evil versions of themselves, I get why people say it sucks, but it shows how good the hero is if theyre facing a threat that has their power set because it highlights to the audience why the hero is special (yellow jacket was more powerful than antman but antman used his knowledge of the quantum realm to beat cross, iron monger's suit was more powerful than iron man, but iron man used his experience of the icing effect and the arc reactor to defeat iron monger, evil mirror versions are fun because it shows that its not the powers that make the hero.) 13:43 Crossbones was always planning to kill himself, he told his men he wouldnt see them again. im not being a contrarian, but i genuinely liked the mega-tonne punch gauntlets. It added more weight to the punches captain america took. also, it was shown in previous movies that he couldnt actually take on captain america, so why not upgrade him? 15:25 the "fault doesnt come in because she fails to save absolutely everybody" the "fault came in" because, as explained in the movie, the avengers are an authority unto themselves. there is zero oversight. theyre not accountable to anyone. 17:05 idk if maria hill being an example of supervillains sucking. as she's been adapted as a hero. 19:20 when adapting superman to man of steel, they ditched the red underpants because "they couldnt find a justification for them in context". Captain america villains are more grounded in reality (batrok the leaper didnt look like his comic counterpart because it was a relatively serious spy movie, same thing here.) You say they made him 'too normal' but it fits that he's not a larger than life villain hell bent on world domination; the real story was the avengers breaking up (hence why the climax isnt cap vs zemo it's cap vs iron man); zemo was the best villain to instigate it given his scheming ability. also the tv shows are piss and dont exist. 21:14 Kaecilius thought the ancient one gaining longevity from the dark dimension but not letting others do it was hypocritical, and he sought it for himself. the only way he and strange are 'mirror images' is that they both do magic. Mordo turned evil because he saw magic as disrupting the natural order. Mordo was being set up as a future threat. A threat that'll have more impact as he and Strange have significant backstory. The flash is the only superhero that should only have other speedsters as his villains. countless youtubers have pointed out how silly it is that a man who can run so fast that he can travel through time, is defeated by a man with a flamethrower

I think it would’ve been sick as hell for Ultron to have been set up in previous films. An idea that comes to mind is maybe having Tony Stark do some form of “side project” in between all of his iron man suits. You wouldn’t know what he’s working on, but you’d know that he’s up to something that isn’t his iron man suits which would intrigue and maybe even somewhat concern you. Maybe even by the end of Iron Man 3 in a post credit scene or just at the end of the film, Tony lays his side project out on the table and it just says “Project Ultron”, bringing a sense of dramatic irony as comic book fans know exactly what is about to come of this project while none of the characters have any idea of what’s about to come.

i hate to say it but i actually loved the MCUs Ultron, i love that he had a personality. robots especially robot villains are soooooooo boring. i can name like two that actually work Megatron and the Terminator every other robot sucks. i always found Ultron so boring in the comics and never understood why people liked him so much

You make great points here. I think the one elephant in the room as to why the MCU makes such bland and forgettable villains is Disney. Disney is not interested in anything they can't market to kids and claim the moral high ground for doing so. Disney is not interested in villains they can't put into a costume and parade around kids in amusement parks.

The MCU had this problem long before Disney bought them though.

6:11 1. the audience knows his body is built from vibranium which is the strongest metal in the mcu at the time of release which caps shield is made from. 2. We know he has a philosophical or academic nature to his personality but is still learning like even how Ultron was about human nature itself even signaling he is basically a child being "born yesterday" and having room to learn as his conversation with Ultron at the end makes clear that what naivety or positive outlook he has on humanity he has much to learn 6:17 his knowledge base starts at what the avengers told him. He's basically a child like being having just been born. But he also appears to have great logic and processing and even theoretically thinking capabilities like able to to logarithmic functions in his head or ability to reduce if the avengers very existence invites challenge and therefore invites conflict. Similar to star trek next gen data who in the first season despite genius level intelligence lacks the ability to fully understand human idiosyncrasies

Really disappointed you didn't roast Ronan more- he's not necessarily even a villain, just a Lawful Neutral enforcer of the Kree, basically "Judge Dredd in Space". They made him a genocidal terrorist in the movie who comes off as more of an irrational nutjob.

"Why did they turn Ultron into a grey blob" *Shows comic version* ..... _is a grey blob_
@kwayneboy1524 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that was dumb even for me as I mean that's what Ultron probably would look like in a film they would give his body detail.
@Emir_9695 ай бұрын
Comic Ultron design is robotic and clean so it's not messy while The MCU one is definitely a big grey blob due its many moving parts that made it messy.

For those saying “not everything has to be comic book accurate”, Your right not everything has to be true to the source material, but most or at least the important parts should’ve been accurate. It’s one of the reason why most of us are watching it. Most of us are comic book fans. What’s the point of watching a comic book movie when they won’t even respect the source material…
@ArcTrooper269 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, One thing is watching the adaptation creating a New story but respecting & paying Homage to the source material(Like Arrow, Armored Adventures & ROTTMNT) & other is just Making Whatever trash you want while hanging from an already famous IP(like Supergirl 2015, FMA live action or Anything from fase 4)

That’s what I’m saying. Namor not being a Chad, Zemo being sympathetic, red skull being forgotten about, Ultron being an weak villain and instead being an emotionless killing machine he is an quipping? Not to mention no Rick jones, Hank Pym or Janet Van Dyme, etc.

Also the mandarin reveal of Travis Slatery was one of the worst moments in the mcu. Like what! It’s like if I’m watching the The dark knight movie and we think that the Joker is the villain but it turns out it that the Joker is just a pawn and an fake and it is revealed that it was Micheal Jai white as the Villain instead the entire time. Why would anyone think that would be an great idea to put in an movie???

I have not read ANY comics or seen the TV series and I thought Zemo was one of the best villains. He is a mysterious dude but also a normal human, he lives in a super human world and wants to take them down but not hurt other people. He seems like a real human and not a ridicilous bad guy. Beats the mirror match any day. But I guess they threw that in the trash and made him a bad mish mash of comic villain and normal human.
@ryker45472 ай бұрын
Zemo is a good villain, just because he's not the same as the comic doesn't automatically make him bad, but that youtuber ignores him

I was very pissed off with Ultron. Voice actor awesome. How they wrote him and didn’t show his ability’s to the comics was just stupid. Ultron is one of marvels biggest threats and he just didn’t feel that way and even when they defeat him he always came back at the worst times for the avengers making them have to fight harder which showed their strength and endurance to keep fighting to keep the world safe. Avengers feel like they are fighting nobody’s and aren’t really saving the world until about infinity war and endgame and that’s it.
