The actor did a good job and it was fine for what James Gunn wanted to do, but the issues stem from the odd choice to make Ego the Living Planet the father of Star Lord(and Mantis but that’s more confusing) where these are characters that you wouldn’t know have any connection with each other. It’s like if I were to say Optimus Prime is the son of Unicron, you would start to raise a eyebrow how you could connect the dots on that. Also one more thing, Star Lord’s origin makes way more sense and far way more interesting in the comics, where Star Lord’s father was fugitive noble stranded on earth due to a coup d’etat.

This really makes me realize a couple things. For one, this really shows that, while people often praise Marvel over DC for "taking its time to introduce characters" it really doesn't. The villians they are introducing here are clearly not given enough time, as are a couple of the heroes, as you've pointed out in your other videos. There could be far more movies made out of the material theyve glossed over. The other thing I realized is that once I contemplated there being far more marvel movies that just immediately felt like a slog and a chore which tells me that these movies have already not been worth the time I've invested into watching them for awhile, probably because of what this video is about among other things. Also, I kinda want that Spy Kids video....
@thecod2345

Honestly they usually have an adequate amount of time, you’d be shocked just how little time some of the commonly cited best villains in cinema have. The problem is a combination of things that’s it’s own discussion, chief being the inefficient use of that time.
@jonathancampbell5231
@jonathancampbell5231 Жыл бұрын
I think Marvel Studios got worried very early on that if they had too many recurring villains, then audiences would have a hard time keeping track and lose interest- for example, Jeff Bridges said his character Obadiah Stane was supposed to survive Iron Man 1, and he only learned that was changed to his death on the day his death scene was shot. The other issue is that there is very little planning behind the scenes beyond "okay, these are the films / shows we are going to be making over the next few years", and many story's are written only when they come to making a particular movie rather than in advance- meaning, a lot of last-minute changes and a lot of plot threads and characters set up in one movie that get dropped later on, either because of studio interference or because the new writers and directors want to do their own thing.

@@low-key-tony They didn't take their time with Zemo. They just used him as a villain in Civil War and decided not to kill him in case they wanted to use him again, and later on decided they did; in both cases though, they used him to fit the plot, rather than make the plot fit Zemo and his character. They no more "took their time" with him than their did Crossbones or Red Skull (weird how it's Captain America villains this happens to, now that I think of it...). They just put him aside rather than threw him in the garbage (ie. killed him off) as they do with most other bad guys. They didn't have some sort of master plan for him or anything- that's not how the MCU rolls.

I used to think Shocker was a goofy villain too, but then I fell in love with his potrayal in Spectacular Spiderman. It's just so natural for him to be an elite thug for hire, who isn't the main boss level dangerous, but competent enough to be a serious threat. I remember playing the Marvel Avengers Alliance game a very long time ago and remembering the Enchantress being one of the iconic villains in the game. The fact that she was completely absent from the movies despite her popularity and even considering the MCU’s current direction is extremely bizarre. The cinematic universe format itself is also an issue. We don’t get time to develop each heroes rogues gallery because the plot is always driving the greater narrative at large. I don't see how the Home movies are self-contained- the first two contain a lot of references to previous Iron Man, Captain America and Avengers movies (and a nod to Captain Marvel) and has Tony Stark, (not) Nick Fury and Dr Strange as supporting characters, while the 3rd relies heavily on people watching five different Spider-Man movies from two separate continuities made by a different studio entirely.

Because then the Guardians could never hope to defeat him. Interesting what you say about Enchantress -- a character I don't know much about, but heard was in some.ways amalgamated into Hela alongside Angela and arguably Lady Death, much like Whiplash in Iron Man 2 being an amalgam of Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo. I forget if the former information comes from an official source or what, but that's the reading that made some sense to me as someone who doesn't know much about those characters (I'm more of an X-Men guy). No, she wasn't ''amalgamated''. Nobody who made that garbage movie even knows who Amora is (probably why we dodged a bullet and didn't see Waititi get his sleazy hands on her). Crimeson Dynamo and Whiplash were combined at the very least because they were two villains of the same character. What does the stupid MCU Hela-in-name-only even have in common with The Enchantress? The whole thing about Amora is that she's the gardener of the Apples of Idunn and tries to win over Thor's love. What aspects did Hela-in-name-only in that awful movie have? It's creepy to even think that, since they did a stupid decision of making her Thor's sister - so what does that mean, she secretly wants to make Thor sleep with her? Angela is nothing like MCU's piss-poor Hela. And Lady Death... did you just randomly name bunch of characters and saw non-existent connection between them? Why do we even need to ''amalgamate'' anything with Hela? She's a great character on her own (not in the MCU), especially knowing she's Loki's daughter in the comics. You're writing fanfics defending garbage movies. Don't do that.

High Evolutionary was pretty damn great. Glad the GOTG movies finally got a great antagonist to really heighten the central conflict. Green Goblin from NWH was awesome too and the other members of sinister 6 ranged from okay to pretty good. And Wen Wu from Shang Chi was pretty darn good i thought too. His payoff at the end was underwhelming cuz he just got sidelined to make way for big cgi dragon fight but still memorable. Otherwise, no one else rlly comin to mind since the end of Endgame. And Kang only comes to mind for easily being the most dissapointing despite being played by a great actor.

You are right with all of these. Ego is a living damn planet, but in the movie, you never get that impression. It feels like just an entity that's so happened to be in a planet. Yea, the actor played a charismatic character, but the climax was completely disappointing. This could have been an opportunity to introduce Adam Warlock as an actual competent character for the Infinity War as some sort of neutral force, and not the man-child we got. The Enchantress could have been an interesting add since she has a complicated relation with Thor. She's actually evil, but she genuinely loves Thor, so she can have a 180 on her plans due to Thors involvement. She could have had played a role in Love and Thunder and justify Jane Foster presence by having some sort of thug-o-war with Thors heart and reason. And Surtr could also have had played a bigger role in later movies, since his mission is to destroy Asgard, but they clarify that Asgard is not a place, but their people, their blood line, so since technically Surtr has not fulfilled his mission, he could still be alive and in chase of the Asgardians.

The High Evolutionary villain was amazing. Just an absolute bastard of a character rather than someone to sympathize with (an absolutely annoying character trait villains have been having). It was a breath of fresh air for marvel to finally have a villain without any redeeming qualities to them. I think Thanos was the last good villain simply cause he made you think about his views and our views. He is right in his views but is doing drastic horrible things that don’t make his actions right.
@jonathancampbell5231
@jonathancampbell5231 Жыл бұрын
He's not right in his views- overpopulation doesn't work they way he thinks it does, at all. He's only "correct" because nobody in the films properly challenges him on it (the closest is Gamora saying "You don't know that!", which isn't a compelling argument). Even Dorkly had a 5 minute video detailing how dumb his plan was.

Thor Ragnaschlock is a movie where I root for no one. I can't root for Thor, because he's a half-witted dipshit who cares more about his hammer than his alleged best friends, three of whom are dead and one of which is missing. I certainly don't root for Valkyrie, a hypocrite who whines about Asgard being bad while she sells people as slaves. You gave MCU's Hela way more praise than she deserves. Certainly it would be bizarre to expect any kind of nuance or depth from a Waitit movie, but her whole point in the comics is to be, like you said, The Goddess of Death. And this poor-man's version of Hela calls herself that, but that moniker has no meaning. Her only interest in ruling over the world of the living. Odin is a cameo, Loki is the third wheel... Anyway, Thor Ragnaschlock was a mistake and the story of Ragnarok deserved a proper epic movie in the style of Jackson's LOTR movies, which the 2004 Ragnarok comic was heavily inspired by.

Ego, as well as Gotg2, is imo quite underrated Ego is the embodiment of the obstacle that the guardians have to face in the movie: literally their ego Ego had to leave his love of his life because "i knew if i return a fourth I'd never leave…" He sees himself, his reason of existence so important so that he would kill his love of his life. Throughout the movie, Peter is full of his head of finally found his father that he thinks Gamora being suspicious is she being jealous. Gamora wanted to be the "favorite child" that she basically left Nebula be tortured for years. Rocket is so deeply insecure thus he tried to make everyone hates him. Yondu had to pretend to be that "strong, tough man" so that he never opens his heart about how he loves Peter as his son. Only Drax is able to be vulnerable and care for the others. They all comes to put down their ego and tries to resolve their problems… except Ego. The one that put a tumor in someone's brain got destroyed by a bomb planted in his brain. As a form of planet or not, who cares. He is personal, he both echos and contradicts the protagonists. That along makes him one of the most interesting villains for me.

They didnt include the enchantress because she is ironically to feminine for the MCU. As much as Disney loves to champion "diversity" it has to be a certain kind. Its not enough to have more female characters, but instead it needs female characters who can do everything on there own and "dont need no man." The woman can't have accentuating female characteristic, and instead must exist to belittle male characters.

Because much of the drama in GotG was driven by the dynamic between Star-Lord and his dad, Ego, I feel like a lot of that would’ve been lost if they’d had him in his planet form for the entire runtime. Absolutely, show off Ego’s planet form to demonstrate his power (and threat), but sparingly. Plus, I also feel like it’d just create the complaint of “yet another CGI monster”
@jonathancampbell5231
@jonathancampbell5231 Жыл бұрын
I mean, Ego WAS ultimately just another CGI monster in the end, though. Plus, it was James Gunn who wanted to make Ego into Peter's dad in the first place- he could have made them unrelated, or not use Ego at all (or save him for a different movie).
@rickygforce4217
@rickygforce4217 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathancampbell5231 Ego was a CGI monster, sure, but the way the CGI was used was actually very thematically cohesive and visually reflected the internal character drama - fleshy, organic production design on the interior of the planet to show his inner insecurities surrounding the fear of sympathy/love/humanity, gross tentacle-power-drains for the parasitic nature of abusive parents feeding their self-indulgence off of their children, and the harsh black growths over the other planets to literally and figuratively represent Ego as a cancer upon everything he touches. It's a lot more idiosyncratic and inspired than we get from the typical MCU film, which usually is content with simply asking "what vibrant clusterf*ck can we create to keep the ADHD-viewers in their seats?"
