A recording of the live performance at the Sprague Memorial Hall, Yale University (Yevgeny Morozov, piano). AUDIO + sheet music.
The Ballade in G minor (Allegro energico) is the third of the Six Pieces for Piano, Op. 118, that Johannes Brahms wrote for solo piano. Completed in 1893 and dedicated to Clara Schumann, set was the penultimate of Brahms's published works. It was also his penultimate work for piano solo.
The pieces are frequently performed. Like Brahms's other late keyboard works, Op. 118 is more introspective than his earlier piano pieces, which tend to be more virtuosic in character.

Brahms does have his own separate Ballades ( op 10 ), and Rhapsodies ( op 79 ), and Op 119 No 4 , too! There are Fantasies, too. Seems like Romantic composers shared a lot of similar names and ideas ( character pieces etc )

Phrase markings were ignored, with staccato articulations in inappropriate places. My opinion. Others make like this unusual interpretation.

Can you point out the measures in question? This was recorded at my student recital so I might not remember the details but I am very curious about your comment now! Have you played this piece? Thank you for your feedback! We should all learn from each other.
