Sir, thank you for your wonderful performance. I adore your tone (and your instrument!) - so rich and expressive. You play like Oistrakh - singing, delicate but virile. I also love your vibrato, especially use of wrist and fingers in most bel canto passages. You are also clearly extremely knowledgeable - you capture the childlike innocence of Brahms lyrical passages, which is the heart of Brahms besides the heaviness and drama. (And your Mozart in K515 was how I dreamed to hear it played). Please come play in Sydney some time!

So wonderful that this has been orchestrated! In case it wasn't mentioned, this is originally a clarinet / piano sonata, arranged for viola by Brahms. It is SO MUCH better as an orchestral piece. No offense to the piano accompanists out there.

Sir, your sound is a wonderful example for all of us, viola players. What a performance! How does the Sonata feel with the orchestra?! I presume it feels really different, maybe a bit awkward since the context is so much different than the original piano part?.. That’s very important that you’ve picked the transcription up to all the viola world. There is few examples of great transcripstions from the music with piano to the music with orchestra. Only the greatests could be capable to do it - Schönberg, Berio, Françaix.. However, the Sonata doesn’t feel "like Brahms" anymore.. I’d love to be in the head and heart of Luciano Berio at that time. What did he think before, what unmeasurable predictions and calculations did he do?.. Strength of the solo instrument vs. orchestra, how big ? what with the original dynamics etc. What can i add, what i am allowed to change? - just to imaging his inner voice. It had to be an enormous task, even for such a master composer as Berio. Im my opinion, to make it feel more like Brahms viola concerto, it really need unlocking the viola part, give it more music from the piano part in order to build longer phrases. As for the orchestra part it appeals for more triplet-work, even more wind ensemble sections, timpani pedal notes.. Maybe he tried and he ruled it out, we will never get to know it.. Once again, thank you for such a great, mind opening and historically important performance!

You have amazing chutzpah suggesting how Berio could have done better than this! I hate to think what sort of attempt you would have made!
