Again as for the Mendelssohn; Violinist; pure gut on A- and D-string. Warm and expressive 💗😘

The Piano Trio No. 2, Op.87, by Johannes Brahms is a mature work where the composer is at the apogee of his writing. Its tendency romantic combined with its classical structure, requires specialized skills that the Greenwich Trio possesses in abundance. The first page of the opening allegro establishes a surprisingly broad scale of expression in several ways. The main theme takes great leaps in an ever-rising movement that stretches further with sinuous chromaticism for several measures before its momentum transfers to the piano where it rises again in a series of accelerating arpeggios that end by settling on a massive dominant chord. The andante of the second movement presents a desperate theme and five variations. With ever-changing facets, Brahms, master of variation, renders a rich and diverse palette of piano trio sounds and textures, an ensemble blessed with powerful unity but, due to its rarity and the distinctive timbre of its constituents, always an intimate braid of three individual strands. The effects range from emphatic singing to tragic power involving gentle whispers, six stanzas of musical poetry. The presto scherzo restores the momentum with a lively and agile lightness in this program. The trio is melodious and abundant, with layers of melody accumulating in successive waves until they fade again into the bristling, nervous rush of the scherzo. The finale returns with a quirky main theme under the musical direction of a giocoso. Numerology does not matter, otherwise the same melodic contour is a signature reflecting a playful spirit. Exotic atmospheres and calculated breakthroughs of Brahmsian grandeur make this fluid rondo an honorable finale. *Lucien*
