The play is very brilliant and the orchestra shed the light of their presence on it. There ara many princes in the orchestra but there's only one Barenboim. I feel his play as if he's adapting a quotation from the Bible. In any case, the way they play gives me a grand pleasant twinge. The play is performed with unusual perfection, and I feel an exquisite beauty of such sounds! Bravissimo!

The first piano concerto is brilliant, but I prefer the second. Mainly because I find the slow movement of this one rather weak, with little to grab my attention through much of the work, although it has a very pretty ending. The slow movement of Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 is among my favorite musical works of all time. It's hard to believe Brahms started this at 21. Of course, he had a lot of help from his friends, Julius Grimm and especially Joseph Joaquim. It was intended to be his first symphony, but that wouldn't come for another 15 years after this one debuted.

Every pianist uses excess rubato in that entrance - Glenn Gould plays it strictly a tempo and it sounds better. Bernstein and Gould disagreed on the tempo for this piece - Gould wanted it a lot slower than Bernstein thought it should go but Gould did not compromise.

Proof that Barenboim has kept up with daily piano practice. Difficult to do with music director ships and jetting around the world to conduct. One needs to be in shape for both the brahms concerti. Ive hesrd him play both. Excellent. Here he sails through the parts that are oftrn troublesome. Orchestra and soloist always perfectly step. My only complaint is the orchestra was allowed to obliterate the piano in spots. Thats the challenge of the Brahms comcerti. Part of it is how its written, so much in the middle and with large heavy orchestration. Sometime the piano accompanies the orchestra , some time the orchestra accompanies. Its handed back and forth, but i think its all meant to be heard., its tuff, but ive heard it done so i know its possible to have balence. Could be the mic placement too. Great performance. ALAS , the maestro is slowing down, withdrawing and cancelling more and more. Dudamel represents the new generation. Thats how it goes. Brahms makes you think of these things. Longing for the past, aprehension for the future and resignation. The end will come. It approaches quicker than we want, but it never stops. Thats how Brahms makes me feel. Even his early works have a nostalgic quality ( "autumnal " is the word often used, but it fits.)

I wonder if Brahms was acquainted with Liszt's music at this point. There's certainly some influence there. But Liszt couldn't construct a vast sonata form like this.

Fabbrini (c'est écrit sur la piano 😊) La Maison Fabbrini existe depuis les années 1920, fondée à Pescara (dans les Abruzzes en Italie).
Barenboim is way past his prime as a pianist, having spent the past thirty years of his career as a very successful conductor. This Berlin concert feels almost like a vanity event. It is a hopelessly haphazard, fragmented performance. If you love Barenboim as a pianist, listen to his old recordings. This is borderline painful to listen to.
