Hearing this two years later, I still think this is maybe one of the finest exemple of what real good chamber music can be, and how it can have an importance in our lives. Brahms for sure knew this in his writing of this music, with so much emotions and aims for something better, hope and regret at the same time, all his feelings can be heard in this music. This is life in all its mysterious aspects, Brahms life and our life. Joy and sorrow in a wonderful mix.

The other sextet (op 36) is fantastic too. And Brahms' two viola quintets (op. 88 and op. 111) and clarinet quintet (op. 115) are magnificent as well. All of this work is hallowed ground for chamber musicians. Any time you get to play it as a violinist, violist or cellist, it's an experience you treasure. Enjoy!

I have never heard this piece before--it's wonderful! I should listen to more Brahms. While I always enjoy watching Janine Jansen perform, I must also point out that she has selected some brilliant violists here. It's worth noting that Jansen can also play the viola herself. Brahms himself evidently took care to write some wonderful viola parts in this sextet. Much enjoyed!

Sometimes we miss wonderful things for a long time. Many people consume large amounts of orchestral and solo music and almost no chamber music, and this is not limited to non-musicians. This is a sad oversight, as some of the mostly moving works from the great composers were chamber music. A huge thanks to one of my favorite violinists for assembling this ensemble to bring us this beauty.

Brahms was infamously slow to compose a full orchestral symphony. This is an early work, yet it shows Brahms' mastery of string sonority. He simply did not need a full symphony orchestra to write a work so sonically rich.

Yes, though it annoyed me that they presented it as being played by only four musicians (I mean, you can still hear six of them, but apparently two were invisible). Wonderful spirited performance, but ugh, the camera work is poorly done. The 1st viola (in this performance Amihai Grosz) plays an incredibly important role in this sextet but the camera misses out on most of the most important 1st viola solos. Usually the camera work is mapped out ahead of time by people who know the piece, but in this case not so much.

Unless I much mistake, this gorgeous work was written when Brahms was in the first flowering of his romance with Agathe Von Siebold. Even though I'm aware that the 2nd Sextet -- written after he broke up with her -- is far more sophisticated, I cling to the first with the ardor I had when I first embraced my wife of 61 years, with whom I still -- praise God -- live happily. Yes, I marvel at the second -- would I could do anything one tenth as fine! But nothing can take the place that the first has in my soul. "Les Amants" is aptly titled.

Sorry I just noticed this excellent question. This movement is in the form of a Theme and Variations. It starts in G minor, down from the B-flat major of the first movement. The first 8 bars, played on the1st viola with a simple chordal accompaniment, are then repeated with the violin taking it an octave higher. Then Amihai plays the second 8 bars with chords, and it is repeated as above. The first Variation (no pause) is given to the cello, where it stays for the repeat, part 2, and its repeat, with minor changes along the way. Similarly: Var. 2 becomes more agitated, with quick triplets dominating the texture. Var.3 is all surging waves of sound, menacing, threatening. The mood changes to the smooth serenity of G major for the 4th Variation. Var. 5 is the one which struck your attention so powerfully and which you described so eloquently. I might add that the ghosts are extremely friendly. The cello returns for a final, G-minor statement of the theme (without repeats) and a brief coda, ending in a somewhat subdued G major. Truly an amazing movement from an amazing piece by an amazing composer, played by 6 amazing musicians. (It was a favorite of Clara Schumann.)

@@urmorph Very nicely put, a very nice analysis. I have not looked at the score, just sat back and enjoyed listening to this one. I've played the G major sextet on the other hand. Back to this 'theme and Variations movement' though, it's tastefully done and not an over-the-top caricature theme and variations... in fact I didn't really pick up that that's what Brahms intended. Of course many pieces expand on motifs and invert them, change the rhythm etc, it's nice to finally hear a 'theme and variations' that's more of a journey. I'm now reminded of the Trout Quintet which has a little more bluntness in its theme and variations. Thanks for all the info !

Man beachte die ähnliche Konstruktion (Passacalia) des 2. Satzes mit dem letzten Satz der sehr viel späteren 4. Sinfonie.
