Lebhafte und dynamische Interpretation dieser perfekt komponierten Sonate mit seidigen Töne der Violine und klaren Töne des Klaviers im relativ schnellen Tempo. Echt atemberaubend!

I love Milstein, this combination of him with Horowitz is interesting. I love it but can't explain why other to say that the piano part just played in such a way that I have never quite heard before. Milstein is first class but in a way that I have heard before.

Agree! I found Milstein's performance quite subtle and nuanced. Lots of tender-loving care. Let's just say Horowitz was interesting... His sound was too loud, that's for sure.

This is by far the most sensitive and sensuous performance from Milstein. Too bad they didn't record the other two, or any other sonatas.

There must be more recordings of them out there somewhere. They toured Russia and Europe together in the 1920s.

Fantastic- interesting to compare with Oistrakh/Richter live version, which I also love!

Oistrakh-Richter sound like if they were thinking of a war when they played the piece. Extremely violent playing. Its still romantic and not Shostakovich.

And: Milstein was pretty much the only one who can. Milstein was probably the only one who understood the sound of Horowitz (he'd had enough years of actually collaborating with him to have learnt what Horowitz was capable of, and knew how to match up;) as often as it sounds like Horowitz is burying Milstein's sound, you can hear the exquisite design in Milstein's playing to accommodate that heavy, percussive sound of Horowitz.
This is the first time I have heard Horowitz in a chamber duo. Because of the huge charismatic personality he was he dominates the performance. Millstein by comparison is polite, restrained and impeccably tasteful, in fact too much so for my taste. I miss Oistrackh's full blooded rich sound in his partnership with Richter live from Moscow.

Interesting comment, because in Milstein's autobiography he says the same thing about Horowitz, namely that two soloists don't always make the best combo.

@@pneron2032 I do not think that Horowitz crossed the line. Piano deserves equal billing and in this recording that's what he delivered.
The sound quality of this is so bad that it tells us nothing really about how they played apart from the speed. I wonder what they really sounded like together? The only other transfer I can find on KZbin is hardly any better.

Please compare Milstein to Adolf Busch in this same work .... and you will discover something ....
@AlexanderArsov6 жыл бұрын
I did. Busch is sloppy and tacky. Milstein is neither.
