Braid Hardneck Garlic

I rarely see people braiding hardback garlic, but it is possible. The conventional braid is more difficult due to the harneck scape. This method of braiding garlic is great. This is an excellent way to store garlic long term as the maximizes bulb spacing and allows for good air circulation around each bulb as the braid hangs.

I like the braid. Idle curiosity here, I was wondering how long you leave your garlic in the ground? Iowa Zone 5a. Planted 5 Nov 22, harvested today, 5 Jul 23, 8 months. The roots were still healthy, and I got the feeling I could have left them in the ground for more bulb growth. But the leaves were turning brown and I figured it was time...

for porcelains I wait until they have about 6 good top leaves and the rest have died back, for rocamboles around 5 good leaves.

When you go to use a bulb off the braid, do you snip from the top first or the bottom? I feel like starting at the base would unwind the braid 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yes I snip from the top down!

Good idea thanks. I just wound my hard-neck with string and just crossing them back a forth a bit as I went, but this looks cool !

It doesn’t seem that common to “braid” hardnecks. This method is more like tying a knot than a braid!
