Many years ago, I was doing my "single guy" shopping. Beer, cigarettes and Ramen noodles. The cashier was scanning the items and neither one of us were paying attention. I thought the final bill was a little low, but the cashier said nothing. When I got home and looked at the receipt, I realized I had gotten a $15 carton of cigarettes for 19 cents, which is what each bag of Ramen noodles cost. COMPUTER ERROR! Not my fault. Simon’s friend is the exact reason there are employees at the self checkouts that stand there (or walk around) and watch you.
@_Abjuranax_4 жыл бұрын
I once drove a neighbor who I found out later was a professional shoplifter. He went through the self check-out at Walmart, and didn't scan over two-thirds of the groceries, and then paid for what he did scan with food stamps. Another time he said that he grabbed a power tool from Home Depot and was walking out the store with through the Gardening department, when an Employee said something to him. Without batting an eye, he just turned and said "don't you just hate waiting in those long lines?" and kept on walking out with the merchandise.
@nekomasteryoutube32324 жыл бұрын
Actually they stopped doing that here aside from the fact they need someone on staff to help with any STUPID shit that happens like when you improperly scan something or just move stuff around in your bag and the self-check out freaks out thinking you removed something.

Around thanksgiving of 2003, the bolt on the starter that held my car's starter grounding wire dropped off (just a couple of inches, but the starter was still ungrounded, so it didn't work). I went to AutoZone to pick up a new starter. Ford sucks, so the starter was easily accessed by simply removing the entire engine, and I'm not really a mechanic (I can change the oil, but a lot more than that and I need an adult). I picked up the starter, paying for the part but somehow negotiating away the need to pay a core charge. I got home, noticed the loose wire, secured it, then drove the part back unused and got a refund. Different employee also refunded the core charge. I informed him I hadn't paid it, but he insisted I had. All in all, I left $40 richer. When they had closed for the evening, I received a call from the manager. Seems that register was short $40 and they had me on file. I took the money back, and told the manager I informed the cashier that I didn't deserve the money because I never paid it. Everyone calls me dumb for not keeping it, and that's fine. Is rather be called dumb for doing the right thing than push a lot of crap that I didn't deserve.

That's really sweet. At one time, I was at a highschool for kids with behavioral problems, and in the school- if you were good on your "school work", they'd have you work up to four days a week. Mostly local businesses- but you were more or less free labor for them, as it was actually the school paying you, rather than the business. For awhile I was working at CVS. I was on cashier a lot, but since I wasn't working through corporate, I didn't have an employee ID number and had to use my co-workers. So there wasn't a record of who was at the cashier at any given time. One day I went into work and got pulled aside by the boss who said I had left the till 50 dollars short the previous day, despite the fact that I had only rung two people out for small transactions. Clearly my co-worker had either fucked up or pocketed 50$ and planned to blame it on me. It really sucked, as I already had enough stigma- having grown up in poverty, in a not so great part of town, and had gotten kicked out of mainstream highschool. I was able to keep working there, but I constantly got side eyed by my boss and a few coworkers. Good on you for being honest. There's a good chance you saved someone's job.

One of the biggest price blunders in US history was the Montgomery ward “microwave blunder” back in the 70s, when $199 microwaves were sold for $1.99 due to a printing error in the Montgomery ward catalog. Although the price was obviously an error, it is illegal to advertise misleading prices to customers in most US states and company had no choice but to honor the $1.99 price until the sale ended on the date printed in the ad. As microwaves were still extremely expensive at the time (think Keurig coffee machines as a modern price equivalent ) Hundreds of thousands of customers flocked to Montgomery ward to take advantage of the super low price, costing the company tens of millions of dollars and heavily contributed to the company’s downfall a few years later.

The electric company handed my mom a $4,000 electric bill one time because it turned out she was paying an "estimated bill" for many months without knowing (or being told by the company) that we were using more power than the estimated bill was for. So for all those months she was paying only a portion of what the actual bill was, then was suddenly told "oh by the way you owe us $4,000, give it to us or you won't have power". Thankfully she was able to pay it off monthly over time, but if the bill showed what it was supposed to be in the first place we would have lowered our power usage considerably and we wouldn't have had the issue to begin with.

In the 1970s, an energy company in Melbourne, AU, started using computers to do the billing; they were overconfident in their system (or their employees' ability to use it) and abandoned manual billing / checking too soon. A customer received one of the new computer-generated bills - for $0.00. Deciding to make a point, he sent the company a cheque for $0.00. When that amount was entered into the system, mayhem ensued: the computer system crashed and it took days to reprogram it so that it could deal with the amount of $0.00.

Great Dan Quayle thumbnail. (Remember when misspelling a vegetable was enough to disqualify one from elected federal office in the U.S.?) My story related to this video is that one time when I was in college, my local grocery store’s cash register system went down. This was back before Internet. The cashier, who was the store manager, told me he could only do cash transactions, and he’d have to guess on the prices for everything as he rang me up on a calculator. He told me to say something if I thought he was charging too much. He made up a price for each item, and those made-up prices were like 10-25% of the actual price. $40 of groceries came to like $8 and change. He looked at me, winked, and said, "How about $5?" I said sure! I only wish I had bought more groceries - and asked if he wanted to go grab a drink sometime. I swear he was flirting. I was too happy about my grocery discount to realize that he was flirting, though.

I always check that the specials are charged correctly. More than once I've gotten to the till and they haven't changed the prices. Another thing I do is, if something is labeled on special I take a photo of the tag on the shelf. This stops another practice I've encountered. It comes up at full price at the till and when you point this out, they send someone to go look to see if the price is right, they remove the tag, claiming it isn't on special anymore and that there was no tag, or that there is a tag, but it was for a different product or brand. Which also brings me to another issue. Putting the tag for the wrong brand under something that is not on sale. Or if it is something like shampoos, they put it under the conditioners instead. So you land up getting the wrong item. This causes issues big time.

I am not Asian but i generally know how much things cost, so if the price seems to high or to low i check recipe. Several times i spotted errors, surprisingly most were in my favor and being a honest person would inform the cashier about them to correct, i do not leave the que before i verify, if i suspect something is wrong, because if you do they won't correct any errors that are in theire favor (is the law in my country and you need to do a scene to management and they can just say no)

Got a bill for $0.00 great. Bug I kept getting it then threaded with more bills. I had to write a check for $0.00 they would not take cash, and I didn't give it, technically.

Most memorable one is mispriced shot glasses. Big chain liquor store put 2 flats of 100 shot glasses on clearance but blundered and listed it as $0.10 instead of $1.00 each. I bought 10 and kindly pointed out the obvious mistake to the clerk, who then proceeded to try and charge me the $1/ea. I pointed that WI laws state you have to give it for the cheaper price and he was only losing $9 on my purchase. He still acted angry that I wouldn't let him charge the higher price, and I told him I'd just buy all 200 (cuz for me it'd be $20, big deal); he stared at me like I was joking as he was scanning some other goods, and I told him 1 sec while I grab a soda..... Came back with both flats and said I was going to purchase these. The guy has always given me 'that look' ever since whenever I shop there. lol

My mother just got charged double for Cox's tv last month do to a computer flaw on their side and they still show she didn't pay so charged 2xs as much and still shut off her tv. And all they say "it's only $500, nothing we can do anyway it's our computers. Just ask the bank for a loan. Have a good day and thank you for choosing Cox's bye." It's Nov. And still trying to fix it.

a string with a weight on one end, and a cable saw on the other. see those sneakers hanging from the telephone lines? you get the idea. Seriously, on a brighter note, if you live in the US, sue them in small claims court for whatever the bill is, and have the judge order them to apply your judgment to the open bill, AND CORRECT YOUR MOTHER'S CREDIT REPORTS!

There was a case recently about a kid who got arrested on trying that DVD trick but with PS4. The scam succeeded the first time, but he got arrested when he tried to do it again.

here in New York the little moron probably would have gotten arrested when he tried to return it for a refund. "Hmmm, my COMPUTER says this was stolen, and here is the video. Smile, you're on UNcandid camera, dufus!"

Back when I worked as a cashier at a military commissary, one of our customers came to the store with a receipt showing that she'd paid $78.78 for a jar of hot fudge topping that should have been 78 cents. It was easy to see what happened - the person entering the prices into the computer stuttered on the keys. I once mistakenly rang up some cans of cat food as 50-pound bags of dog food, which resulted in a charge of more than $200.

2 years ago, our monthly water bill came through as (South African) R330 633 (About $22 400). Our bill is usually about R600, so this was about 550 months, all charged in one bill. Long story short, it took us 11 months to sort out, during which they threatened to take our house to cover the bill (paid off and worh R1.2m, about $80 000), even though they admitted they had not actually taken a water reading from the meter in 6+ years! In the end, we got the account written off, R3600 credit and a new water meter at their expense, so we could try again. We now take a photo of the reading monthly and take it to them, to work out the bill. We are also down to average R450 a month and they still have not come out to check!

I calculated that supermarkets try to steal about 150 euro a year from me by wrong prices. I always check the receipt, and have to go to the service desk at least once a week...

Where I live (Canada) many retailers abide by the "scanning code of practice" which is a voluntary industry term that basically says if something scans at a higher price than what's on the shelf you get the shelf price plus $10 off (or free if it's under 10 bucks). I always check as things are scanning in and often enough find mispriced items.

If the bank accidentally put that much money in my bank account, it would be wire transfered to a bank account in the Cayman Islands and I'd be following it to a non extradition country 😂

In my state, Connecitcut, we have a Law, where if a consumer commodity (basicly food and household items) scans at a higher price then the sign says, you are entitled to 1 of those items for free, up to a value of $20.00. And the stores have to put signs up informing the shoppers of this. I think this should be the law everywhere. It definstely makes the stores do a much better job at pricing and signage (I was working in retail when this was enacted, and in the first few weeks my store hired 5 new full time employees that there entire job was checking signage to what the items scanned at and fixxing any errors. Theoretically the store should only give out 1 item for free, they should then IMMIDATELY fix the problem. But that only happens when there is enough staff on hand to be able to change the signs.

I used to work in customer service for EE. For quote a while, every single customer would, on their third bill, be charged £51.95 for 'Time charge normal weekday fulfilment'. Nobody in the call center had any idea what this meant. We weren't told to just credit it, but we were told to credit any unusual item if there was no ticket about it. Which there never was, because it was a bug. That bug was eventually fixed, but then people started randomly getting charged £114 for I can't remember what that one was called. We'd regularly get people complaining that their bills were too high, and more often than not it turned out that the charged were legitimate because premium rate numbers are evil. One of the other agents had a guy with a bill of over £9,000 (insert DragonBall Z joke) for what appeared to be a sex chat line. Another got a call from some sort of Arabian oil sheik with a bill for over £12,000 in international calls, and he paid that without complaint as if it was just normal.

Amazon almost gave me a $1500 TV. I let it go for a while thinking they would figure it out, but they never did. 3 months later, I called them and told them about it. My conscience was beating the crap out of me the whole time.

When I was a kid I went to the store with my parents to buy food for a big family camping trip, they found some huge coolers, and put everything in them in the store to make sure everything that they were bringing would fit in the coolers. Well when they went through the checkout the cashier forgot to scan the coolers, and they didn't notice tell they were on the trip

Another channel? Ok, let’s all make suggestions for what Simon’s next channel should be. All-soups channel? Famous bald men with beards? This day in my facial hair history? Erotic foods? Science fiction genealogies and maps? Serious suggestion: the history of clothing. Just all things clothing related. What’s the deal with French cuffs? Who invented tie-dye? A video on fashionable eyeglasses. Hammer pants. Codpieces. Medieval hair shirts. Basketball shorts. Sleeveless T-shirts. Those little dresses people used to dress baby boys up in in old photographs from the turn of the century. The history of oil cloth and waterproofing clothing. What did American slaves wear? Who invented powdered wigs? The first sneaker.
