Simon, your position on animal rights compared to human rights is spot on! They did a study a few years ago and a majority of Americans answered if their pet and a stranger were drowning in a pool that they would save their pet first. That's so messed up. Then again I've grown up in rural Minnesota and have had to put down dogs that my family has "owned", butcher chickens, and go hunting sooo that changes your mind on a lot of things when you actually grow up with the food you consume and dogs aren't part of the family but are rather used for pest control and more productive purposes than taking a piss or shit on the carpet. That being said, it still hurts and brings tears to put down a dog. But if it came between saving my dog or a stranger, the life of a stranger has much more value.

Considering putting pets in the cargo hold tends to kill them, if I ever get into a situation where I’ll be away from home for a long time, I’d just find someone I trust to look after them. Then again, I’d prefer to live and work close enough to home that I don’t have to rely on planes myself. Good thing my home state has plenty of horticulture and landscaping-related job opportunities.
@newageretro5 жыл бұрын
Putting pets in cargo holds does not tend to kill them, the time in the cargo hold is typically the safest part of their journey. It's the handling before and after the flight that tends to be most likely to have issues.

Came to the comments to say this, I heard the death rate can be crazy high. It's not just a case of people having too much money (although I'm sure there were some), I would never travel an animal in cargo. I also found out that if a horse gets upset mid-flight and looks like it might set the others off then they'll put it down right then and there, rather than risk the whole load kicking off. I can absolutely understand why they would do it, horses panicking in a confined space are deadly, so why put it in that situation in the first place.

I've spoken with people in the airline industry. The major reason (for at least one airline) you will still find ashtrays in the lavatories is it increases the resale value. When they retire their aircraft, they resell them. Typically, airlines from other countries who cannot afford a Boeing 737 or similar aircraft new will scoop up these 2nd had planes. Many of these countries do not have the strict regulations of "no smoking". ...At least that is what I've discovered when I asked around about it.

Simon, I once almost lost a very expensive pedigree puppy on a domestic flight because they are treated like luggage and he was left on board the plane, in the luggage area, which is not temperature controlled, for 4hours on a 35 degree C day after a 2 hour flight during which they didn’t give him anything to drink, which was preceded by another hour on the tarmac in the heat before he got on the plane, again with no water given! By the time I got him he was so dehydrated and sick he needed emergency treatment and bags of saline to save his life. Other people have lost pets in similar circumstances so I understand the attraction of an airline that doesn’t treat pets like luggage. It is not cheap to fly an animal anywhere, and if they’re treated like luggage there is always the risk of them dying inflight due to the airline not giving a $#&@. They might not be humans but we have a responsibility to treat them with dignity and care because they are here because of us. Treating an animal badly is a bit like treating a baby badly because of the level of trust and dependency they have towards us. I say that as both a mother of multiple children and the owner of multiple animals. So yeah, while I understand that many people don’t value animal life, those of us that take responsibility for the lives we have in our family, both human and animal, feel strongly about how airlines treat animals in their care. I will now rather drive for several days to pick up a pup rather than fly them because although that is faster, a road trip with me is much safer for the animal as I will care for it along the way, which the airlines do not do.
@veta01045 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how there aren't standards in place for animals on an airline. At least a small part of the plane that can be converted for pets if the need arises. Do they need 5 star service? No but shit make sure the basic needs are met.

To answer one of your questions about Dogs aircraft - The biggest problem is that current airlines employ irresponsible people that end p getting pets killed when they are placed in the pressurized cargo bay. Furthermore, most airlines are no longer allowing larger dogs, such as German Shepherd Dogs, even in the cargo bay. Even more ridiculous is that airlines will not allow people to pay for a seat on a plane for their dogs. For those of us who compete in Dog Sports, it can be a pain to get to international competitions when airlines are so restrictive. Residing in the USA, its really hard to drive to Western Europe.

The pet carriers have more “personal space” inside them than people get in economy seating. I mean, really - the pets lay down, can stand up without hitting their head, can turn around, etc. That said, pets are rightfully usually afraid of flying, especially without their owner to comfort them, so I’m all for a mixed airline of people and pets in the cabin. Swap out a seat for a barrier and give the pet space next to their owner while traveling.

Flight attendants have important safety functions on airplanes. They are taken for granted more than they should be*. That said, I feel like MOST** Hooters girls are not complete morons and they could pass flight attendant training if they were so inclined. A pay bump would be incentive enough, I think. Hooters probably just didn't want to pay to have them trained. Corporate bean counters. *Except for that one gay guy on your trip who turns the pre-flight safety presentation into an actual entertaining performance. Everyone loves that dude. Rightly so, too. **Most wait staff in general are not complete morons, for sure.

Just for shits and giggles, I looked it up. There is no flight attendant degree. Apparently, the majority of flight attendants get on the job paid training. There are flight attendant schools if you are willing to fork over $5000-22000 for 8 weeks of training. A note of comfort: planes have a lift factor that means even if all of their engines fail, they are capable of gently gliding to the ground. The pilot can adjust the angle of the plane's descent to speed up or slow down as necessary to make a safe, if slightly uncomfortable, landing. Which, to be honest, probably isn't going to be that much more rough than normal.

An airline where pet needs are attended to is a decent idea in theory, as pets have a bad tendency of dying on airplanes due to stress, temperature and pressure shifts (if in the luggage area...I couldn't find proof that any airline still keeps pets in said area today...but if they do, don't do it), and certain breeds of dog and cat with small airways (Persian cats, French bulldogs, pugs, etc.) are refused flights by most airlines (but a pet airline might actually accommodate them). In all, though, if you want to travel with your pet, it's best to do so via car or boat (depending on the geography of your journey...and your pet as some don't do well on water either).

To be honest, it might not be as bad as you think. On flights that used to allow smoking, the smoke was perhaps noticeable, but not super overwhelming if you were in the non smoking section. Not sure about earlier, but in the mid 90's smoking was only allowed at the rear section of the plane. Because fresh air is fed to the cabin (in majority of commercial jets) from the front, and at a rate/volume faster than people normally imagine; if you sat near the front and don't have to venture back to use the toilet, then you at least get acclimatised to it pretty quickly.

I traveled from Georgia to California on an AmTrac sleeper car. It was wonderful. Commercial buses have nice comfy roomy seats. It might take longer to get to where your going but being jammed on those hideously uncomfortable plane seats is a no go for me. On my last flight I kept getting cramps in my right thigh. It was excruciating. I desperately needed to stand but we were at a point in the flight of seatbelts and no standing. I was literally in tears. The man, total stranger, in the aisle seat said to change seats with him so I could stretch my leg out in the aisle. We got yelled at by the flight attendant for the few seconds it took to swap seats. After the plane landed the flight attendant gave the man and I a really loud lecture. Before I could stand up for him, people all around us told her what happened. She didn’t care. Said we were lucky she wasn’t having us arrested. I don’t plan on ever getting on a plane again unless I can fly first class which I doubt I will ever afford. Edit: Should humans be relegated above dogs? Well if you stood one of my grandkids next to one of my dogs and I had to chose who would survive it would of course be my grandchild. I don’t want to be friends with a person who would chose the dog over the child. Know I have rescued animals my entire life. I have been involved in many campaigns against animal cruelty. I support many sanctuaries and foster dogs. I love animals but humans will always come first. Great video Simon...good job Danny.

Yes Danny, I enjoy flying, and even more crazy I love the airport experience, seeing the cool planes close up, seeing all the destinations that said planes will go to and seeing the different shops in the terminal is fun to me.

The pet airline thing is actually a very good idea... for folks who've got enough money. The animals will presumably be much better cared for and less stressed.

I’m old enough to have flown quite a lot during the smoking era. In the 1970s, I’d fly with my grandmother to visit relatives in another state, and my grandmother was a smoker. We’d sit in the smoking section of the plane - the back end of the plane - and it was every bit as bad as TV and movies make it look. It was like sitting in smog. Of course, even when you weren’t in the smoking section, you were still sitting in a plane full of smoke. I would’ve paid money for a private "club" airline that had no smoking back then.

There is a pet airline now, but it's not what you think. It transports animals across the county, in small private planes. It's handy when doing animal transport, like for rescues and such.

One of the purposes of the pet airline was to transport puppies and kittens from breeders to their owners. It was a response to the same baby animals from dying in cargo holds of most airlines.

"They served burgers and fried" ... fried what? Also as well, there is a St. Petersburg in Florida. There's also one maybe 15 minutes from my house here in western Pennsylvania, but it's a borough of 400 people and probably doesn't have an airport to speak of.

The concept or a pet airline wasn't the problem, more or less is was logistics and price. There's not really many, if any options for transportation of pets. Most train or bus companies don't allow pets (and driving isn't always an option), and if they do only small ones. Some airlines still don't have a safe pet transport policy, some allow small pets in the cabin as a carry on;as long as he/she fits with an approved crate under the seat. Cargo holds that hold pets are a relatively good option and usually go off without a hitch, every now and then an animal does die in cargo. It doesn't matter whether you see your dog (or other pet) on the same level (I like my pets because they're not like people) however that doesn't mean you want just anyone to look after them or the possibility of them dying in cargo.

@@young.frankenstein55_54 If you can look into their eyes and say animals have no soul, then maybe you're lacking one. It's more than anthropomorphicism and you know it. No one has proof of what happens after death. I'd rather visualize a Heaven with all animals in it because having nothing but people would suck. Proof? Prove they don't.

i *am* a smoker, though one who's been denied the pleasure for 11 years(after my stroke). I'd have a real problem going from the UK to Abu Dhabi on a "smoking lounge" flight. Just thinking about it, I'm smelling the sweet smoke drifting past. In that enclosed a space, I'd essentially OD from 2nd-hand smoke and would be miserable for a while after.
