I review, breakdown and explain the Shogun Episode 4 Trailer. I react to the preview which is focussed on Toranaga arriving in Izu and building an army, Yabushige realising that he's made a mistake in being loyal to Ishido, Mariko telling John Blackthorne about what her father did and also the meaning of The Eighthfold Fence. I also give my theories and predictions on episode 4.

The backstory of Mariko in the book is as you said in the vid. Thought I'd add a bit of color background on the character upon which she is _loosely_ based on; Hosokawa Garcia (nee Akechi Tama) as well as her husband (Buntaro in the book/show), celebrated warrior Hosokawa Tadaoki. 1. Unlike in the book, she was already married to Tadaoki when her father committed his act, and they had 5 children together (rather than 1). 2. Her father Akechi Mitsuhide planned and executed the assassination of Oda Nobunaga (the first great unifier of Japan and the immediate predecessor of the deceased Taiko), whilst being directly pledged to Nobunaga as a vassal. This was the ultimate dishonor in the Samurai code and brought shame to the entire bloodline _including her children_ with Tadaoki. 3. Historically, this was why Tadaoki was hard to his kids ("you're no longer a suckling child!") as they had to become extra tough and hardened to overcome the stain of the Akechi blood in them when they grew up to be samurai themselves. This was also one factor into why the relationship with his wife was cold/strained. The other being him being a strict adherent of Buddhism and the Bushido code which often conflicted with her Catholic values, such as her refusal to commit seppuku after consulting with her priest (Father Martin in the show). i.e. She wasn't "ordered" to live by Toranaga as in the books but didn't due to the Christian view on suicide. 4. Still, it seemed historically that he loved her, as after the Akechi name became pariah, he refused to divorce her despite all advice to do so, but instead sequestered her away in a remote village for some years until it was socially more acceptable to summon her back again. Can't say any more as her future arc in history and in the book overlap at a couple of significant junctures and would be major spoilery.

4:35 She did care about him a great deal, but you see in that era nobility is expected to be in control of their emotions. Remember how that one person in first episode broke his composure and talked in anger, and in turn "forced" to kill himself and his children? They take it very seriously, and that is one of the reasons why outsiders are considered barbarians, you can guess how they see rowdy sailors with filthy mouths. Either way, that long look between each other was a goodbye. Before that Hirokatsu was swelled with pride thanks to recognition from his lord, which is literally the best thing a samurai could hope for. Toranaga also by displaying such respect for him, made sure his name will be known and talked among Ishido's men. Personal honor matters greatly to a samurai, and your name being known throughout your enemies especially is a big honor.

I wonder how much of the show is based on the original life of William Adams, how much of it is based on the novel and how much of an impact the original TV show had on this remake. In the 1980 miniseries they essentially cut out everything that wasnt from Blackthorne's perspective, so we see and discover everything anew, as he did. The real Blackthorne, William Adams, did end up training troops and helping Torunawa (Togukawa) become shogun. He also built two English-style ships and sailed to Acapulco in Mexico, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand in the Shogun's name. He also negotiated a trade treaty on behalf of the Dutch and the English and convinced the Shogun to expel the Portuguese and outlaw Catholicism on the islands. Without his influence, Japan would probably be Catholic today and would have been colonised by European powers, just like the Philippines. That's how much of an impact he had on world history.

In historical fact, Japan expelled the Portuguese and pursued national isolation not during the time of Ieyasu(Toranaga)'s shogun, but during the time of his grandson Iemitsu. When Iemitsu was a shogun, a local lord planned to conquer the Philippines and needed funds. The local lord imposed heavy taxes on the people, which caused the people to rebel. Since the people at the center of the rebellion were Christians, they expected reinforcements from Portugal. So Iemitsu banned Christianity and expelled Portugal. William Adams was trusted by Ieyasu but not by his son Hidetada, so he did not get involved in politics after Ieyasu's death in 1616. Drama is fiction. In the drama, one sailor was boiled in a cauldron, but in historical fact, no one was executed even though the Portuguese demanded his execution. William Adams was not the only sailor Ieyasu trusted, but also Jan Joosten van Lodensteyn. There is still a place named after Jan Joosten in front of Tokyo Station.

Have you read the book? Toranaga "shouted with so much passion" because he was trapped. Those were Yabu's men. Toranaga had few men with him at the time and Yabu could have captured him and delivered him to Ishido easily. He praised Yabu and the men to distract them. Also, Toranaga was feigning depression and sadness at those times because he wanted his enemies to think he was helpless when all along everyone was moving as he had planned.

4:35... "That's why she probably didn't seem to care that much." Japanese culture and her position prevented her from any outward signs of emotion regardless of how bad it was. And she (the actress) did an excellent job of showing this. You could see that she was trying to stay stone-faced about it but was obviously struggling to keep a lid on things. They didn't get along well. But it's obvious she was very disturbed to (almost) see her husband die. 5:58... "where it looked like he was training them." What happens in this scene is that he's ordered to give up his guns which were a gift from Toranaga. That resulted in brinkmanship where each side was threatening to use force. IIRC from the old series, fujiko comes out and suggests that he take the swords he was given as hatamoto instead. Then he gives her the gun and orders her to shoot them if they try to take them. And that causes them to back down.

In the book an eight-fold fence (or was it 10 or 12? Don’t remember) was described by Mariko to explain to Blackthorne how the Japanese, who lives in houses with paper walls, can block out events going on around them, such as couples arguing or pillowing.

The shot of Blackthorne pointing a brace of pistols at three samurai isn't a training scene. That would be the scene in the novel (and original series), where Yabu (Yabushige in this series) sends Omi to confiscate the pistols that Toranaga had given him, and Blackthorne refuses to give them up. There's a scene in other trailers where you hear him yealling "IYE!" (no!) as he points them. He then accompanies Omi to an audience with Yabu, but not before giving the pistols to a consort he's been given by Toranaga (Fuji/Fujiko), and telling her to shoot Omi if he tries to take them -- which she would do because Blackthorne commanded it, and as her "husband" it would be her duty. There's another trailer that shows a _very_ brief clip of her pointing one of the pistols also.

I never watched the original or read the book. I'm kinda sad if Fuji will end up as Blackthorne's consort because she just lost her husband and son and to think that she wouldn't have any control of whether to give herself to a man after being denied the choice to end her life is harsh. Not to mention that Blackthorne clearly is fascinated with Mariko and that would be an extra complication.

Well i think they just made it easier for the writers of the show to portray him worse and then do away with him. In the Book he really is a very celebrated warrior and supposed to be well educated and articulate. Him and his wife have ongoing issues between her Christianity.
