I haven't read the novel, but I'm totally getting the vibe that Yabushige, the semi-comic relief Uncle, was written to become one of the fan favorites and a potential dark horse, who unfortunately, may become the unlikely turncoat hero... giving his life to protect our main protagonists. Yabushige's probable sacrifice as a dispensable character, though much more significant than plot cannon fodders, to provide that emotional gut punch for audience when called upon. He is a man who'd choose his death. The uncle's current situation is similar to being caught between the proverbial waves and rock.

Lol .. My man did you miss the part where the son of the "shocked" jabushiki (i think his name was) told him that he has a plan? The dude is in on it and is an ambitious snake. I love the character, but he is not shocked in the end. He too wanted that war, because it is in his interest to be valuable to someone, because it will keep him from insta death. Lord Toranaga is absolutely aware I think of the inner nature of his "ally", that by the way has done nothing that is not in Lord Toranaga's interest. (sorry for my shit English, it's my 3-rd language)

I haven't read the book, but I just correctly guess (and verified it) who her family is, and why she is thus with Toranaga. I won't give that bit away, but the second she said "it (her family name) is well-known in Japan", but it is one she absolutely has to hide, I knew who she was. And the fact that an Englishman is now entangled with basically Tokugawa, gives her away if you know Japanese history of the period. Which is why, the last scene, is her absolute horror at war coming again. Her clan lost everything, literally everything but her (and historically the character she is based on became essentially a political prisoner) the last time two great armies fought to unify Japan and be Shogun. It also makes sense why she was married to Toda, who is loosely based on the Honda clan.

Blackthorne's elevation to the status of Hatamoto is not just a reflection of his personal growth and adaptation but also a strategic move by Toranaga to utilize Blackthorne's foreignness as an advantage in his campaigns. I feel Nagakado just trying to look out for his dad the best way he knows how. Foolish? A bit. But pretty ballsy. He was right in a sense that any ‘information’ taken by the enemy would deem detrimental to his father’s chances of success. He just wants to make Father proud and to be dependable as the next heir. But in the eyes of Samurai… it is deemed savage and cowardly. But war is War.. us in the present wouldn’t see that. But back then it was dishonorable. I‘m curious to find out what his father’s response would be…

Episode 4 is fine, if a bit rushed about Mariko and Blackthorn's time in Ajiro. Still... It's great... right up until the writers blow the story all to hell with Toranaga's son turning cannons on Jozen. As far as I can tell, with this one completely unnecessary re-write they have made it impossible to tell the rest of the story even close to how it was written. They've done So. Freaking. Well. with it so far I just don't understand why they had to do this! I honestly have no idea how they can possibly get it back on track. They made *such* a big deal about being authentic. And I love that! I just wish they could've managed to be as faithful to the writer.

I can't continue watching this, it's so unfaithful to the source it should be called loosely based on a reimagination of shogun, it's as if they made a parody, all the characters are wrong, they act and are portrayed as if some horrible skin walker took their places. I only got half way into episode 2 and just said yeah, the actors are great, even the production value, it's just like world war Z, not his book. Ya know what I'll even go into detail from what you picked up on with how and what is different, start off with yabu and jozen, this was planned, they intentionally planned to provoke toranaga's son naga to do the deed with his mock battle, jozen also died by being stabbed repeatedly over a long period while his remaining men that didn't get shot committed seppuku, yabu had already decided to side with toranaga well before that, or in the least betray him later, yabu was never concerned about jozen's death since it was naga who refused a direct order to let him go and live, this directly absolves yabu from all consequences no matter what. In the books yabu doesn't regret his choice of toranaga until the regents formed up for the third time, since they added a member to replace him weeks later who also resigned and was killed badly with his family by ishido for invalidating the council orders of impeachment the first time... sent an impeachment notice with toranaga's half brother and then accepted with a 28 day notice to arrive, and he managed to constantly put that off until the council basically disintegrated in betraying each other Yabu commands blackthorn learns the language in six months of he will have the village destroyed and all it's occupants crucified, he had a desire to learn before it and learned a little from the monk in the prison... who he never told he was english, the prison was indoors, cramped to a point of men on top of each other, all either naked or close too, and the monk was a friar was both old, sickly and mad. Blackthorn never gifted fujiko his guns, he gave them to her only to stop them from being taken by omi at yabu's order on the first night, she pulls it on him in the same instance when omi tries to take it from her, by all accounts he was forced to either back down or get shot, he backed down and reported that to yabu, in where he would be told he handled it badly and should have just had them taken at a later time instead of force the issue. Later he keeps them and gives another to fujiko, who learns to use one from another unknown person, she never uses one though. By this time omi had already completely made his plans known to kill yabu to his wife and mother, it was due to insults of having kept him and his family waiting for him like peasants, wasting the feast they presented and not offering any excuses. This mariko is not the book version, this one is outspoken, not reserved, the book one was cold and almost a spider with how she chose her words, diminutive, obedient and most of all, silent unless spoken to, this one is opinionated and loud, she's gone from the interpreter and lady samurai to... who is this. I could go on for a thousand more words and not have all the inaccuracies, so at the end of my rant, this is not shogun by james clavell, this is FX's reimagination of a modern take.

The episode was not bad. But this is the worst one for me so far. It moved way too quickly. Better let John settle down in this episode and slowly accept his new position by the end of it. Remember, he was promised his ship and men. Marikos intimate scene with John was also absolutly too fast and kinda cliche. With them both mentioning their families in the last episode, I was hoping for maybe a hinted love interest at best. The „intrigue“ is also done without proper setup from previous episodes and feels rushed. One scene with the nephew and another with Toronaga's son and that's it? And Toronaga‘s „war speech“ should have been saved for a proper army/assembly. I think those were mostly peasant soldiers and very few samurais. I still liked the episode, but yeah.. everything felt kinda rushed.
@daryllndemmayah48746 ай бұрын
I won’t debate the Romance, but everything is based with reason. Toranaga could not trust Yabushiges army and retainers. He made that speech to further convinced them to join his cause. So that they betray him, further forcing yabushige to pledge loyalty to him since he is in place where he can’t be loyal. Ishido saved his life while they fought in trying to conquer Korea. While Toranage gave him the power he has now. Homie can’t decide between his old boss or his new boss. Both of them made him into the man he is. He knows they are perks to joining either side. But he wants to survive and he is stuck figuring who will win. So the speech was to further back him and his Army into a corner of fully supporting him. The one scenes with yabushiges nephew and tornaga son, has a lot of intreague. Yabushige’s nephew has a lot of insecurities and he is the same age as toranags son who has insecurities of himself. Both are in the shadows of their father figures. Both are also extreme of their father figures both are trying to prove themselves. Yabuhsige a great warrior, not really that good of a leader, is very indecisive in his decisions and support at times. is always trying to play both sides. His nephew is more decisive than yabushige, and is smarter as he comes up with ideas that influence yabushige who takes credit for those ideas. Remember earlier its was his nephew that convinced him not to reveal the ship to toranaga.Yabushige doesn’t really want to be seen as a traitor or betrayer.Yabushige nephew as we can see can be a snake, will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals and is more of a leader than yabushige and is more decisive than yabushige and toranags son is just as patient as his father but even more extreme to the point where it is regarded as timidity and indecisiveness e can’t think. For his own, both showed in this episode they are starting to gain confidence in their abilities and strengths. Toranaga son had to kill the messenger because if he didn’t it will lead to Ishido having knowing their advantage. Also Yabushige was about to sell them out to Ishido by revealing their abilities. Yabushige knew that if he went he will die. He did the showing to preserve himself that he survives and he can be on good standing with Ishido and also avoiding a war that Toranaga is not ready yet. Staying in good terms with Toranaga, Toranaga son sees this. Knows that Yabushige is indecisive, could be a hindrance to them later die to him being an extremely valuable wild card. Made the decision to kill the messenger to further commit Yabushige against his will to their cause. Now Yabushige can’t play both sides. Also Ishido won’t know of thier adavantage. He eliminated two problems with one idea. But will cost them dearly in the short term. Long term it might lead them to winning the whole thing. A fully committed yabushige with his army all be it against his wishes will be very beneficial.
@TheRandomASDF6 ай бұрын
@@daryllndemmayah4874 Your point about the speech is good. I haven't thought about that. It seemed like he gave a speech to basically nonames. But yeah, your point makes sense. About the intrigue: My issue is with the pacing of the intrigue itself. The woman whispers something into the ear of Yabushige's nephew and some scenes later we see him talking to Toronaga's son, whom we haven't seen him talking to till that moment (I think). It would have been better if we had some scenes of them together before, in which they would talk about their fathers and so on. And I think you give Toronaga's son too much credit. In my opinion, he acted on impulse after talking to Yabushige's nephew. I don't think that he did that to force Yabushige to choose a side. He just wanted to do something that he thought was right. In which case was: kill the man who insulted (did he actually?) his father and is an enemy anyway. But another thing came up while thinking about all that: Didn't the woman plant the idea of him (Yabushige's nephew) replacing his father? What does provoking the son of Toronaga into doing what he did help him in anyway?

Dwarf wars.🤣🤣🤣 A 16th-century samurai was usually very slim and ranging from 160 to 165 centimetres (5'3″ to 5'5″) in height. Japanese native horses are small -- at under 147 cm at the shoulder. It's like a donkey. Samurai can't afford metal armours because Japan doesn't have enough iron and they spend their precious iron on making swords. Don't be fooled by those TV shows. In reality, It's like hobbits wearing bamboo armours and riding cute donkeys to war.🤭🤭🤭

This is perhaps one of rare instants of seeing how terrifiying how cannons are depicted. Usualy in oldder films a cannon blast as a simple explosion on the ground and people fell down. But here you see several people ripped apart due to chain shot and so accrately. So seeing those men get ripped in half must been a horror to witniss.

This is crap. Where did the canons that did all the damage come from ? The smoke from their firing is seen in the far distance. Chain and grape are used in decreasing ranges of approaching targets. The idea that firing them from such a great distance at targets removed from the friendly party by only a few yards with such great accuracy is truly laughable. Also, who sighted and placed those cannons without Blacthorn’s knowledge or guidance.

You got the dynamics wrong with Toranaga on the beach making a speech. Toranaga was actually afraid that Yabushige could take him prisoner in Ajiro, and deliver him to Ishido. That he was surrounded by a massive Yabushige army chanting "Yabushige!" made him more worried. However, Toranaga being smart and manipulative, gave such a martial speech that the troops changed their chants to "Toranaga!" He also took the occasion to suddenly leave by boat back to Edo, escaping to somewhere where he is safer and nor surrounded by potentially unreliable troops. Very crafty this Toranaga!
