Look at photos taken of the bodies & the autopsies. There was evidence of damage to their knuckles. As for the snow on the tent, it developed during snowfall. Very sturdy tent built by Dyatlov. No avalanche. Tent poles would not be standing after an avalanche.

None of these kids had done a level 3 hike before. Igor had taken a group into the region the year before. The most simple scenario I have seen is that one of the 9 left the tent to relieve himself. On his return a gust of wind blew out the single candle that illuminated the interior of the tent and caused the homemade, poorly vented stove to bellow smoke into the tent. That they panicked as the tent filled with smoke. Blind and terrified they cut the tent open and fled the tent (it was pitch black no way to find their clothing and no time). They ran to the nearby cedar tree (about 1.5 Km) where the first two died when they fell from the small cedar they were trying to climb in search of fuel. They died of head injuries and hyperthermia there bodies were badly burned..Their clothes were removed by the survivors. Three of the hikers chose to return to the tent (indicating that the threat inside the tent was assumed to be gone). They died of hypothermia on the way. Three of the other four fell into the ravine onto the rocks. The snow could have cushioned the rocks and prevented tearing of the skin.Lyuda may well have bitten her tongue off in the fall as there was blood found in her stomach. The last, sat and waited for his death.The missing eyes could well have been the work of birds. Radiation often occurs in decomposing corpses and a "tanned" skin is a mark of hypothermia. I do not know that this is the answer but it makes far more sense to me than aliens, Yetis or secret military experiments.

Have you ever been in a room so densely filled with smoke that you could neither see nor breathe? I have. You HAVE to get out, immediately. As to why they would have run so far from the tent, they were in desperate need of heat and the small cyprus was the only source of possible heat visible. It was also the nearest visible gathering place. What would be the point of hanging around the tent? It was slashed in two places and totally collapsed by them all escaping through the upper cut. There was no shelter or heat available there.

The rescue party fund the stove in bits, I too considered this explanation until I found this out. Why travel 1 mile to the tree line. their best chance of survival was to stay with the tent. Why didn't they put some clothes on , maybe they could not because their clothes and equipment were buried in snow from a snow slide, and they were wet through and useless? Something scared them out of the tent so bad they cut it to exit quickly, but then they walked away from it rather than ran according to the footsteps. A torch was found at the tent so they had light if they needed it. The blunt force trauma injuries were similar to those from a bomb blast but they had only superficial external injuries. If it was an explosion how come they all didn't have such injuries? Or was it the pressure of snow as they lay buried in the ravine for 3 months? No one theory seems to fit all the outcomes.Why were some of the hikers better dressed than others even allowing for the scavenging of clothes from the dead two by the fire, were they outside the tent when the 'event' happened and shouted to those inside to get out quick only to find it was a false alarm? More questions than answers.

It is not possible to have been an avalanche. They were experienced first of all and knew not to put up a tent in an an area where an avalanche could have occurred. Also the slope was investigated and it is not possible from its angle. If there was an avalanche it would have been too small to do any damage.

I think avalanche theory is incorrect. There was only a smaller hill next to their tent, so in my opinion that snow on tent is only a kind of 'fake trace'. Maybe those people made it, who killed the students. They have also found footprints even next to their tent, so there was no avalanche or a great snowfall during that night... or maybe I missed something, but in my opinion these poor guys were killed by some soldiers next to a 'test site', or something like that.

I have read all the documents in Russian, including the autopsy & statements of the people investigating this case. First of all, the hikers didn't run. They cut the tent (why would they, they could exit?), then they took each other by the hand and walked away, leisurely. Their clothes were all mixed up. Guys put on women's clothes & vice versa. Now, about the tree. Two of them climbed it to collect branches for the fire, which seems to be idiotic as there was enough wood around the place. Then, at some point they seemed to have separated. One of the bodies found in the ravine was missing eyes and tongue. The injuries were that severe that it looked as if two of the hikers in the ravine were hit by a truck going at them at a full-speed, mind you, that's what was said.
@Peace-lr7mt8 жыл бұрын
+CitizenOf TheWorld First time anyone has stated they left in a leisurely fashion, as all accounts indicate them fleeing in frenzied states of dress. This fact alone (not to mention the cut open tent), shows they were panicked. Every indication points to them being under extreme and sudden distress to which they cut themselves out after hurriedly grabbing what items they could - in order to dress themselves at least partially. No where have I seen any source which states them leaving their tent in a leisurely fashion. The theories which make very good sense are (as they mistakenly went off track) they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up in the range of Soviet weapons testing (which would help explain the radiation), or - they fled from an avalanche (but then where did the radiation come from?). Or, because some of the injuries were consistent with animal mutilations, there are those who believe they were abducted by aliens - then simply dropped. It is doubtful if we will ever know the full story. Tragic, yet interesting story.
@dragonmartijn7 жыл бұрын
The footsteps indicate they walked, also it was probably at moments very dark, so they couldn't run even if they wished. No avalanche; radiation came from labs where some of the hikers worked; aliens don't exist. So, all together now: it were bombs from planes. Local people saw them flying.
@krissymissy18886 жыл бұрын
CitizenOf TheWorld Yea I read they walked in a straight path one behind the other some maybe even carrying one and one set of tracks veered off to the side. They found foot prints due to a few not having shoes on being barefoot and some had socks. The guys who died under the tree showed signs of them trying to start a fire even burns to the feet and parts of body I guess trying to go to great lengths to stay warm. They died and the others took the dead's clothes. They said the ones in the ravine , 2 were huddled close together against the wall and the girl missing her tongue and eyes was found a bit further down the stream faced down and squished between 2 boulders. Also they said the diary claimed they left most of the supplies including a bunch of wood and the smoke stack to the oven. Food was set out but nothing had been eaten not even taken a bite of. Also in regards to the smoke stack one guy asked another to make a newer easier to carry one where they didn't have to take that part. Also they said a large amount of soot at the top of the tent. 2 of them had shoes and their costs so they were either not ready for bed or were closer to the way they exited , or put them on while the others were cutting the tent. I also heard they all went in different directions but maybe those were the foot prints of the ones with shoes. They claimed it looked as if they tried to build an ice cave then they died and then the others tried going back to the tent and were found a good distance from each other but in a line crawling back up to the tent. The only ones with injuries were the ones in the ravine and one under the tree I think had a cracked skull and their skin was found at the top of the tree so one or two possibly fell. One more thing they thought was strange was that they knew to pitch their tent by some trees or wooded area but they built it out in the open. The only thing I can come up with is smoke from the new burner he made. And it was located at the front of the tent by the door which those were the people who had no shoes socks or proper clothes. Also I read one had cuts to his knuckles like he was in a fight....maybe it was smoke maybe they heard an avalanche in the distance and thought it would come to their tent and fled. Then a blizzard hit and couldn't find their way home. I don't think they climbed the tree for branches because they would be wet , I think they climbed to see if whatever danger they were in had stopped. The linking of the hands and one walking behind the other screams blizzard to me.
@johnkilrainblackstone69865 жыл бұрын
krissy Missy Something was in the tent with them. That same something that had been lurking outside moments before. Something so outlandish that it scared the hell out of them. Something that can easely get through walls and such. Research ball lightning. Imagine something similar but intelligent. I'm sorry but no matter how much I try to stay clear of crazy theories the supernatural element keeps creeping in.
@tyj91755 жыл бұрын
The investigation showed they were running from the tent and after a while they regrouped and walked single file, comrade gets hypothermia, fight breaks out about who yelled avalanche now understanding their predicament. Someone climbs the tree to see if they can see their tent. They can. Three try to go back up, others deeper in the woods. Those in the ravine clearly fell six meters that's why they appear crushed. Missing eyes and tounges is normal it happens to bodies in freezing temperatures.
@mhn37739 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed this explanation, I have looked at videos of this before and read up on it. It was never clear to me that so few of them had trauma and the ones with trauma were not at the tent. I thought it was an open and shut case of an avalance. It his the tent kills a few the rest run and die. But with that diagram I now understand why there are so many unanswered questions about this. Thank you.
@nyla-amarasmit81176 жыл бұрын
mhn3773 pls look elsewhere to this docu. This was badly done. I love johns work normally but this was no avalanche. The deaths were horrific. More force then any human can do. I'm convinced this is avalanche (hence fractures on some) -> some cut their way out of tent with not much clothes, others possibly paradoxical undressing due to hypothermia -> snowstorm so they get lost, build small fire, some die there of hypothermia, others perish trying to walk back to ruined tents. - As for the missing tongue/eyes: that was due to putrefaction -- one girl was face down in a stream. The autopsies at the time even noted this as the normal putrefaction, and nothing mysterious. - As for radiation on their clothing: that whole area was a weapons testing site, so it's not surprising at all. Conclusion: this is not so mysterious if you use Occam's razor = the simplest explanation is most likely to be true. It can really be summed up as: *lost shelter + lost clothes = guaranteed death = putrefaction*.

I think they were attacked by a Yeti. There was an image caught on camera and a diary entry by one of the hikers stating that the snowman really exists. I think that on the fateful night it had attacked them and caused them to flee their tent in different directions in whatever they were wearing thus, some of them had no shoes on or proper adequate clothing when eventually found. I think the slits in the tent was for them to keep a look out for the Yeti in case it approached them which shows they were in fear of something dangerous and were aware of its presence.

The radiation...I'm on a Chernobyl bender right now with the anniversary coming. Discoloration of the skin is a sign of acute radiation sickness. two things. 1. Radiation is naturally occurring in mountainous, rocky regions. Could a naturally occurring vein of say uranium have been uncovered by the Avalanche? What are the mineral deposits in the area? 2. Do you know how many nuclear accidents Russia has had besides Chernobyl? When did the Mayak disaster happen in relation to time to Dyatlov? Is Mayak close to Dyatlov? Do waters from Mayak flow through Dyatlov? If not Mayak, check out the number of nuclear accidents in Russia. Maybe the Rusdians keep a tight lip on the incident because a nuclear accident or fissionable material was discarded there or happened there. Maybe they don't want people in the area because it's...radioactive?

Regarding reasons for an animal or local tribe attack, the investigation took place later. Addional snowfall and or winds kicking up already fallen snow would have covered them. Is it known from weather records if high winds were active or more snowfall occurred in the days between the incident and investigation. If so then those reasons should be considered.

I know people will hate me for this... I agree with the Russian ME's findings. An avalanche of ice and snow would have caused the crushing injuries, and then melted in the spring weather leaving nothing behind. Would also explain no skin injuries. The missing eyes and tongue...I have family members who have endured violence. I'm stunned at people believing that missing eyes and tongue are a sign of violence. If the eyes and tongue had been ripped out, was the jaw broken or dislocated? Were there scratches or indentations around the eye orbitals? Were the eye sockets broken. When something is violently done, there are more signs then just, "Oh the tongue is missing." The girl whose eyes and tongue were missing was face down in water. The eyes and tongue most likely just fell out due to putrefaction. Look at the flesh attached to the skull. How does it compare to the other bodies in terms of decomposition (i.e., bodies sitting in snow versus bodies in water).

Someone yells avalanche, they run out and down, they realize no avalanche has happend, a confrontation ensues about who yelled avalanche and realizing they are screwed. If you suddenly realized you're gonna die because of the sudden flight from the tent you might be pissed at who ever yelled avalanche. I see in my mind a divided group scuffling and then a truce. Some try to go back to the tent, some stay with their hypothermic comrade, others go deeper in the woods. Bodies on mt. everest look the same way, eyeless, lipless, toungeless. The other wounds I can only account to being from the scuffle when they realized their predicament. People do strange lord of the flies type things in survival situations.

m dunc why would someone yell “avalanche!”?

There is no evidence that it was them who cut the tent. If they were killed by people, it is more than possible that the killer(s) returned to the tent and cut it up, either to confound investigators or to ensure that on the off chance one or more made it back, they would have no effective shelter. There is also no evidence that it was them who started the fire (which burned for an hour and a half and was intentionally extinguished), them who cut the trees in the area (including a large patch off the cedar tree near the fire), or them who built the "snow den." If you consider that there may have been other people in the area (Mansi, hunters, military, etc.), it opens up all kinds of possibilities about why they left their tent or how they died.

As I started to watch this it slowly reminded me of a movie I watched on netflix. It could have maybe been based around this incident but of course the ending was a little crazy and same with what happened to them. But had to do with them being near some military base which a few of them find this looked door. It had some weird creatures which I think had once been humans and something to do with time travel. I forget the name of the movie but the whole tongue missing was one part that I think was in the movie. Along with few other things.

I found it and it's called Devils Pass which is based on what these people think happened to these people.

How to say Dyatlov. The DY sounds like a J. So Jatlov. :) I've always been curious about this story. I kind of feel like it's possible they left because the tent filled with smoke too quickly and they panicked. In some photos(before death), it looks as if some of their coats may have already been damaged due to some sort of heat source. Maybe that's why they built a second stove. I think they may have underestimated the elements at night time if that's when it happened.

I'm no good at speaking Russian either. I studied it a little in the late '70s so that if Russia invaded the United States, I'd be able to at least say "I surrender" to the conquering Russian army. I failed miserably & gave up. There're a lot of "Y" sounds in the Russian language & they occur at the most awkward places. My tongue got caught & wrapped around the "Y" sounds & jammed. I'll stick with English & Japanese. Although I'm a 71 year old American man, my hobby is pretending to be a 16 year old Japanese high school girl, so I'm interested in the Japanese language.

Its amazing all the things that people miss that is right in front of their faces when they prescribe to a certain world view. I used to be one of them. Then I stepped out of the comfort zone and broadened my horizons. There is an obvious answer to what happened here. However, few would believe it.

The Radiation....I'm on Chernobyl bender right now with the anniversary coming up. The discolored skin is a sign of ARS...acute radiation sickness. Two thoughts: Radioactive material is naturally occurring especially in mountainous regions. Would an avalanche have uncovered and released a large, naturally occurring vein of something, uranium maybe? What is the area known for mineral wise? Or...are you aware of the number of nuclear disasters Russia has had besides Chernobyl? I need a map, is Mayak anywhere near the location or do waters from Mayak flow through the region of Dyatlov? When did Mayak disaster occur versus Dyatlov pass incident? If not related to Mayak...look up the number of Russian Radiation accidents....I'm wondering if there is something buried there the gov't doesn't want people knowing, hearing, or approaching because...its radioactive.

Around the same time in MN 12 Ojibwa hunters on Cass lake went to Star island where a lake called Windego resides to go fishing and hunting.. Days passed and When the hunters never came home, a search party went to the island and found their bodies skins hanging in the trees with a strange vaper coming off of their skins...Their actual bones- guts- muscles were gone- never to be found. Strange lights like fire balls- bare large footprints coming out ice on the lake going only one way and weird noises experienced on the island. Forget about the local natives opening up about it.

Corpse lying face down for 3 months in flowing water would most likely cause putrefaction of the soft tissue, eyes, lips and tongue as well as the facial skin. See Dubinina's corpse photo.
