telling us "I wear my heart out my hoodie" has to be one of the Ren lyrics that makes my heart swell the most. And that's saying something. (but also that moment where he steps into the sunlight and the full track explodes is... idk, it sets off explosions in my brain, the best kind of explosions) My first real job was working in a big indie music store for 6 years in the early 1990s. Bittersweet Symphony was part of the near-daily soundtrack of my life for half a decade - background music at work, with co-workers, with customers, with friends outside of work, at all the bars (I didn't go *clubbing,* I went to see live music, and Symphony would often be part of the canned music before/after the band). I always enjoyed it, but now at age 50, my view is that Ren's made it better, lol. OH, and ALSO - on the concept of "the city is my companion so I'm never alone;" and earlier, "there's poetry inside the city if you listen enough" - more explosions of the best kind in my brain; I was utterly obsessed with 2 Pogues albums (I think they were the ones Shane liked the least tho - Peace and Love and Hell's Ditch... it was hard to get other albums in Canada even in the late 80s/early 90s) and one song on Hell's Ditch, "London You're a Lady" ... the song itself didn't do a huge amount for me but the lyrics... idk, they helped mould a really formational thought/viewpoint in my psyche about the role of the environment you inhabit. Both the good parts and the tragic parts of that environment. And I rarely see people sort-of talk about it... but goddamn Ren does, here. ♥ That line, but honestly, the entire premise/concept and execution of the track and video. So... brain explosions of the best kind, pulling together musical (and poetic/literary) threads from 2 ends of my life (the Pogues and Ren). RIP Shane. EDit: ... "9 to 5 crucible" is the lyric; the literary meaning of crucible is a situation that forces transformation on a person. Here, Ren leaves it up to your imagination whether the job is transforming the person into a cog in the machine, or whether it's doing the opposite; creating a revolutionary/iconoclast. I mean, I *think* he'd say you can interpret it either way/he considers both possibilities to be valid, but I tend to imagine, given the wider context of the song, that it's the former. ... the stoop Ren ends the song sitting in front of is the door to a flat where a friend who died, had lived (related: this is Brighton, once again).

Very cool watching your reaction as a Brit and you connecting with the good and bad. I’m American, from Los Angeles originally, and hearing you parse Ren’s lyrics and the bit about “the city that we love” all of a sudden reminded me of Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Under the Bridge” which was such an anthem of my early teen years growing up in Southern California. Ren is genius ! He writes down his scattered thoughts and puts them back together in a way that is more than just poetry. He has spent his life dedicated to the music as well. He can play more instruments than I know of. Try listening to some of THE BIG PUSH. That is the band he played with on the streets of Brighton. They did a lot of covers but also have several originals. ❣️❣️❣️

So many things to say this time lol..kick ass reaction as always! Pls do loose yourself next, it'll blow your mind. Fun fact about me, I'm an army brat. My dad is English I was born in Germany but also lived in the UK. I only ended up in Canada cause my dad was stationed here. According to a DNA thing I took im 97% European lol. I swear my soul is calling for me to come back to the UK. I miss it even tho I was little when I was there. I have a whole side of the family there. I love the weather and I have a disturbing love of curry and fish and chips. I swear after my kids are grown I'm come back to the UK it feels like home not here..well there's my adhd ramble haha HAPPY BIRTHDAY HECTOR DARLIN! looking swell for 38 😉. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARK AND HAPPY NEW YEAR ( because fuck the calendar and 1 January, that’s not YOUR New Year)! I’m getting flashbacks to the days when the day started with the end of the night before. It fit in because Die Hard is considered a “ Christmas movie “ yet it’s definitely, most fucking definitely, NOT a movie for Christmas. 9-5 crucible, route is not commutable ..so it’s like “a situation of severe trial, or one in which different elements interact” and then the Tracks the kid falls off make the route uncommutable ( also time in juvenile is not commutable …hard, fast and not changing. And having lived in the dry heat of Vegas - long story( yep, sweat running from your neck to your ass crack) and the hot, humid oppressive heat of Chicago, I do know the difference. BUT the UK is not used to that level of heat and the roads LITERALLY are not built for it so cracks can occur when the concrete, asphalt, etc expands. Hence a factor 10 tremor. BTW,
