That's so 1850's Great Britain, lol. Drones with set flight paths might be a better option these days. We just need a complete map of the sky and to make altitude assignments for each flying craft size. There will also need to be launch and land areas at designated spots everywhere air crafts fly. These designated areas of air space would be a lot like up and down escalators or elevators in the sky.

I think it would be very cool to deliver mail that way. In the town I grew up in the local jewelry store, a huge 3 story building, had a system dating back decades. They used it to retrieve watches that had been fixed, or items from the store rooms. Once I was sent to the store to pick up my mom's watch. I gave the receipt to the sales girl, and she put it through the tube. In a few minutes the watch came back through the tube in a box in the canister. I can still recall the sound it made as something was sent, and arrived.

"And in other news tonight, FEMA has been mobilized after a heavily populated region of Brooklyn has sunk into the ground. Experts blame the enormous sinkhole on Amazon's ambitious plan to connect every household in America to one of their distribution centers using pneumatic tubes. 'There's just more tubes than ground under there,' said one emergency worker. "'We should have stuck with drones,' said one Amazon employee on condition of anonymity."

I'm designing my own house of which I want to integrate into the design a pneumatic tube system for the trash and the laundry. After watching this video I'm curious as to if on a smaller scale you could replace the fan with a diaphragm of sorts or even a plunger weight hour glass design of a wider diameter in order to gear the displacement of air to accommodate for distance. Sorta thinking it up as I go. Lol. Long story are there any particular fashions you might see fit available in your areas of expertise? No homo

I’m working on designing a prototype city, and two considerations currently are a monorail in a tube with carts or some method of pneumatic tube, that’s the whole reason I came here, so technically I guess I may think it’s time for a pneumatic tube revival, but I’m not sure I like the idea of not being able to branch connections, having roughly 10 tubes per city block would quickly add up, even if small. Btw the main reason for such extravagancies is the city design is based around not letting cars (or trucks and such) into the city itself, as they are dangerous and take space best suited to other things, space that ironically makes travel further.
@sumfacts Жыл бұрын
Same !!!!!! I have had this idea floating around for a long time and just scribbled away . I live in a landlocked country and I think this can be very practical.I would love to share some ideas with you .
@Ice_Karma Жыл бұрын
It'd be cool, but I'm not sure they'd be all that useful nowadays. Historic pneumatic tube systems came in a wide variety of sizes, to transport everything from lettermail to passengers, but modern ones seem to be sized exclusively for lettermail or items of a similar size. This is unfortunate, as postal mail is shifting from lettermail to parcels.
@haiggoh9 жыл бұрын
they should have never stopped using it. that must have been so much faster than snail mail is today
@Dojan59 жыл бұрын
haiggoh I don't think the tubes can branch though. If one post office caters to say, 10000 households, they'd need 10000 different tubes. That's a lot of tubes. That said, you could probably overcome that issue fairly easily.
@haiggoh9 жыл бұрын
Dojan5 you could. Basically it is like train rails. You can only use one path at a time but you could build a system that changes via switches so you could branch out after all

What this (very good) clip doesn't convey, is how common & ubiquitous this stuff was. I'm old, child of '62. In the late '60s I lived in a very small & backward country town called Kempsey, in northern NSW, Australia. They didn't have a town wide delivery system, but the bank had one, the local supermarket had one, and I think a couple of the office buildings had them. It was about as common as a switchboard / internal phone system, PABX. Much of the time, it performed the same job as an internal phone system, with the advantage that you could scribble a note, ('Is this cheque to be accepted?') and send the note and the cheque...

Instead of this or even having mail delivery service, people should have to pick up their own mail, when notified by the Postal Service; "You've got mail!" It would eliminate mail cars, postal delivery workers, eliminate the gasoline they use, the cost of their uniforms and bags, lower the budget for the U.S.P.S. and lower our taxes. It might even give the government and incentive to have companies cut down on garbage mail since all mail would have to sit waiting in storage units for each house until we picked up our mail. Sorta like P.O. Boxes, but as mail boxes instead. Housing communities helped by grouping mail boxes in one place, like apartment complexes do, which makes it easier and quicker for the postal delivery worker, but it still costs money. The internet has greatly reduced the need for the U.S.P.S., but it' might never eliminate it. But pneumatic tubes might be helpful in the post office since they'd have to be bigger buildings! HOLY CRAP, I just realized the last comment for this vid was 6 years ago and this vid is from 2015! I guess, I'm 8 years too late.

Banks and other offices in Canada stopped using this system in the late 1980s, because sometimes the capsules got stuck in the tubes and naturally, the one that got stuck or misdirected was the one that was too valuable to lose. I worked in one of the last banks to use the system.

There is actually a parallel universe where Amazon got started in the 1890's delivering parcels via 14" diameter pneumatic tubes that can handle 22" long pods. Over there everyone now has a tube going to their house connected to an intricate electronically controlled logistics system and a package can be sent from a home in NYC to a home in LA in 12 hours or less.
@dementedvinny24516 жыл бұрын
7.2 hours give or take if we're talking about the 1960s project that could deliver people and since we're talking about a package I would say even faster since less weight unless you're delivering a car. 388mph/2797 Miles = 7.2 hours. I guess maybe less than an hour for a shoebox-sized package. I could be wrong since its a parallel universe.
