IUDs are clearly the best option. They’re the best at stopping pregnancy, they don’t affect the quality of sex, you don’t have to remember them, you don’t have to worry about antibiotics, they don’t affect your body’s hormonal balance and they last for years

Are they painful, though? Because today, Google presented me with some article about how some lady got an IUD and it was really painful, and she got mad when her doctor suggested taking paracetamol, because apparently they don't suggest such pain meds for stents... even though a quick Google search showed me an article suggesting Ibuprofen to deal with stent pain. And yes, I know Ibuprofen and paracetamol are two completely different types of meds - I should know, since I'm on Prozac, and apparently it's safe to take with paracetamol but not Ibuprofen - but the point is, I think whoever wrote that article was greatly exaggerating the double standards. But like... honestly, stuff like this makes me feel really bad for women. I want to say "just don't have sex", but some women might like that, and take offense to me saying that - as if there's literally no other reason to abstain but for religious/"chastity" reasons. But then on the other hand, masturbation is a thing, so... maybe I'm just overthinking.

lulu well if u abstain for the first six week and check the string every three days and go back to the doctor for your check up and check the strings every time after the period and then move every 6-8 months to make your everything is in place it’s basically impossible to get pregnant. And you are if you have an iud and don’t do all of these steps and end up getting pregnant there is a 50% of a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy

I *do* use an IUD. I had the 5 year progesteron releasing one inserted and it works great. The only downside is how painful the insertion process is but at least it doesn't take very long to do. The first month after having it, I did have painful cramps and felt like I could physically feel the IUD inside of me which was unpleasant. Since then it's been smooth sailing and it does give you lighter or no periods which is an awesome bonus.

veronica corningstone Hi! The pain was... Not good, but you know, I have had period cramps that were worse? You grit your teeth and it's over in a moment :) I have had minor pains since - but honestly, they were more irritating that painful. But yeah, I had to realize that while I was on the pill, my period cramps all but stopped. With this, they came back - but nothing too painful. There was a teeny little pain that night and the next day, nothing too bad, enough to skip sports for a day or two, but apart from that, I could do everything I usually do :) Although I have had the copper one, because I wanted to get rid of hormones :) (but the periods did get heavier :( ) But I'm really happy with mine so far :) I feel like my hormone balance is back to normal (as compared to the pill), I never have to worry about forgetting taking the pill... I definitely haven't regretted it :) I wish you all the luck, and I hope you'll come back to share your experience soon :) :)

+EYN thank you so much for your reply! So, I haven't really had a period in years and I forgot what it's like to cramp, etc. The insertion/procedure itself honestly hurt me so bad, more than I expected. BUT, that intense pain went away VERY quickly. I think I'd rate the pain about a 7.5-8/10. It's just so strange because the pain comes and goes so fast! It's hard to explain but I know you know what I mean since you went through it. I left my appointment and got some junk food and a heating pad. Just sat down. Might use this opportunity to take a nap, lol. I'll try to come back and post another update! For anyone reading this before getting an IUD, yes it hurts...but it's doable. The initial pain (from insertion) goes away so very quickly that it almostttt helps you forget the discomfort. :)

@Macy Doradat Mirena is used for heavy periods and can be inserted even though you haven't given birth yet. Other hormonal IUD's could work too but only Mirena is proven to be effective enough, there's not enough info or research on others about the heavy period effect I guess. I recommend taking a good painkiller (or two different painkillers that can be safely used together) an hour before. Ask the doctors/nurses about the pain meds you could take before you go.

When I was 19, i got the copper IUD (never been pregnant) and it was the worst decision ever. Insertion was horribly painful, the pain afterwards was just awful, like, I was continuously on the verge of fainting. I never stopped bleeding entirely, and pooping gave me cramps. I had to have it removed after 2 months (would have done it sooner, but i was scared, cause all the pain) now, at 24, i got the Skyla IUD, and it is amazing. Sex drive is back up to pre-birth control pill levels, it didn't hurt after the initial insertion AND IT IS THE BEST. Skyla only lasts for 3 years, so it's not as cost effective as mirena, but IT IS SO AWESOME. + my periods have stopped. It's pretty feakin' great.

When you think about it, our options really suck. You either get the IUD inserted and have a foreign object inside your uterus for years, or you take a pill/patch/shot/implant that pumps hormones in you and can cause side effects, such as weight gain, high blood pressure and even a change in your libido. 😔
@BrainStuffShow

Hey Savannah Swan! First, I absolutely understand how upsetting this stuff can be, but try not to stress out too much. Stressing/not sleeping can make you more vulnerable to stomach bugs and other illnesses that could explain your symptoms. Like you said, a lot of things can make you miss your period. Sometimes IUDs that contain hormones (like Mirena does) can make your periods change or even stop entirely. But definitely go back to PP or another gynecologist, explain the situation, and get checked out as soon as possible. And yeah, they might scold you a little for missing your checkups, but don't worry -- everyone understands being busy, and I'm sure they see stuff like this happen all the time. Hopefully they'll be cool and will help you figure out what's going on. In the meanwhile, take care of you! :) /Lauren, Your Friendly Neighborhood BrainStuff Staffer

I had the IUD fitted today, it wasn't the best experience of my life, rather uncomfortable but barely painful. Most of the discomfort came from the clamp the nurse used to fit it, the rest felt like a period pain. The main thing is to relax during insertion so that the nurse can fit it more easily. Personally I need contraception that does not release hormones as I struggle with depression and was not warned before having the contraceptive implant fitted that it should not be fitted in women with a history of depression. Also I like that it is carefree protection with regular periods and none of the other side effects I got with the implant and pill such as swollen belly, sore boobs and spots!

I’ve had an IUD similar to mirena for over 10 years now with a replacement after 5 years of course & I’ve never had any issues AT ALL with odor, infections, pain/cramping, other than the insertion/removal/replacement procedures😵...yikes! Considerin I’ve never had any kids the first insertion was pretty brutal, the second wasn’t quite so painful but just enough to dread a third however it’s a relatively small price to avoid 132 weeks of blood, sweat & miserable cramps but that’s just my opinion.

Even if you ovulated why would that mean it's a abortifacient that doesn't make any sense? This just blocks sperm from getting to the egg, ovulated or not so sperm never even gets to it a egg and that egg never gets to the uterus to attach which is true fertilization. Now if a egg got fertilized and I mean sperm reaches the egg and the egg goes to the uterus and attaches to the uterus and what ever the control was destroying the egg that is attached that would be an abortion. The only thing that does this is the abortion pill.

More good news: Menstrual cramps and bleeding during the adjustment phase (the first few months) can be managed with ibuprophen. Over time with a copper IUD most women's bodies go back to the pattern they had before while the hormonal IUD causes menstrual bleeding and cramps to reduce by on average 90% over the course of the first year.

Great information, though some of it is a little old, and the news is even better over time. Hormonal IUD's are now thought to protect against pelvic infections because that same mucus plug that blocks the sperm also blocks pathogens. The only infection risk is during the first two weeks, if germs get introduced during the insertion.

I got Skyla (hormonal IUD) 4 months ago. The insertion itself was pretty painful. Then I had a 3.5 month long period. Mostly light but when it was heavy, it was really heavy and more painful than normal. But now that that's over, it's been nice not having to worry about birth control for the next couple years! Time will tell if I stop getting periods.

I know this is a KZbin comment, so take it with a grain of salt and look into for yourself. I got a copper IUDS put in four days ago. I was and still am on my period. The doctor recommended this because when you have your period, the cervix is open and it's easier to insert the device. I honestly think this is what makes the difference between and an awful insertion and a simply unpleasant one. It was painful, but not unbearably so, the experience was more upsetting than anything but not due to pain. This is in stark contrast to my coworker who said it was the worst pain she ever had, but she was not on her period. The second day was a bit rough. I was sore and my abdomens hurt, but the next day was fine. Ask about getting it inserted on your period, just my two cents

I believe it's legally the best they are allowed to claim. My understanding is that the number of verified pregnancies recorded after proper insertion has been established is 0. Meaning that every known instance of someone getting pregnant with one of these was the result of it not being in place properly. That's not always the doctors fault either, sometimes the body moves it, which is why the doctor has to follow up and check on it. Even then the numbers are closer to 2 in 1000 in the first year.
@Morna777

Just be aware, though, that the 99% number is just for unintended pregnancies. IUDs DO NOT protect against sexually transmitted infections. Only barrier methods (like condoms) do that.

according to my older sister who tried to get one the IUD and her body just did not agree and her body actively rejected it causeing her a lot of pain in the process. To me i think she is not the only woman who has had that experence with an IUD and the pain of it is most likely why many Americans do not get one as no one likes pain.

I have the Mirena IUD and I love it. I'm on my second one. My first was inserted just after my now 6 and half year old was born. I did have a minor issue with it shifting upwards and it caused some pain, but that was after 4 years and it was quickly removed and replaced. I haven't had an issue since. I highly recommend it. Set it and almost forget it. As for why won't Americans use it, you have to qualify for it, namely be in a stable relationship with at least 1 child or have an issue with your period before they consider you for it. I think it's just silly for those requirement. For the low, low, cost of 600 dollars you can have highly effective birth control.. for FIVE years. My husband and I do not use any other birth control and we still only have our 1 child.

Rachel Blackburn my thing is that they are not easy to get and are painful i never said they do not work as yes i agree they do work and surprisingly well too. It is just the pain is the only thing that i pointed out other than that it is a good choice if it is the choice that you want to make but it should be your own choice not someone else's for you. Personally if you, your sister, and who ever else wants to get them then do as it is the woman's choice to or not to get it not mine. Also a IUD is not the popular method of birth control the pill is the popular one mainly because of cost and ease of just not having to take it when the woman wants to have the chance for a baby again.

Yeah apparently insertion can be insanely painful for something like 5% of women who are very sensitive. I was one of the lucky few. They had to call my fiance (my emergency contact) because I was in so much pain and needed to be driven home. But by the next day it just felt like normal cramps, and within a week I couldn't feel anything anymore.

It's a good birth control. But it did hurt getting it put in.

Actually, the implant is 99.95% effective being slightly more effective than the IUD (something like only 600 women have been recorded to have gotten pregnant on it), but I'm on it and I really don't suggest it. The side effects do suck. It uses the same drug as the Mirena IUD, but a much higher dosage of it. During the first 6 months I was on it I was basically a crazy, emotional, bloated pregnant lady with periods lasting anywhere from 3-40 days. Although the side effects have calmed down significantly I'm definitely getting on an IUD next time (most likely ParaGuard). In my opinion the initial dosage of progesterone in the implant is far too high for most people to be able to handle and it's a huge shock to your system. Perhaps if you were on low dose progesterone (like the Mirena or Cerazette pill) before getting on the implant you'd have less side effects as your body would already be used to the drug, but going from 0-full throttle on the implant really messed with my body's hormones

I had my IUD ( no hormone) inserted yesterday cuz I have a 7 month baby and to wait 2 years to have the second one. I was terrify after hearing the horror stories about it. But my period was due the next day so my cervix was opened, I thought she wouldn't be able to insert it because I had a c section on and my cervix will be too tight LoL. As she saw I was in fear she injected a local anaesthetic (a jelly tube) then inserted the IUD I did felt a tiny a very tiny discomfort but that was it. I didn't cry or scream. I will be due to a check up in 6 weeks :)

I've done the shot before and I hated it. It made me super moody and I had bleeding off and on for the duration of the 3 months. I went with the Paragard because Ive had issues with hormones and depression. I've never been pregnant and that has been the biggest hurdle for me in getting an IUD. Lots of practitioners won't give you one if you have never been pregnant. I went to Planned Parenthood and they were fantastic! They do IUD insertions all day so their staff is super good at the insertion process. I won't lie, it did hurt, the measurements were the worst of it, but I took 800mg of ibuprofen beforehand and I think it helped. The actual insertion was the easiest part for me. Good luck and I hope you can get the birth control method you want and need!

I was the 1%. Ectopic pregnancy resulting in emergency bilateral tubal ligation. My Fallopian tube ruptured and I was bleeding internally , loosing almost 2 liters of blood. The pain felt like labor. Looking back , I wish I had taken pregnancy test every month to verify I wasn’t -as I was irregular. I had plan to do this but , I stopped after the 8 month. I only had Mirena for a year. As a mother of 4 ,it was the worst experience of my life. I feared dying, and I suffered postpartum depression after the surgery and iud removal for a week - something that never happened after my deliveries. If you choose an iud just get pregnancy test done to make sure you catch an ectopic pregnancy quickly - it can save your life!

Ive been searching for a whole 5 mins and can't find anywhere online that explains how the IUD works lol.. I know how it's inserted, how long it works, what it looks like, where it's placed and that it has hormones but how does it work??! Is the plastic made out of hormones? Does it squirt out hormones through out the years? Is all of the plastic made out of hormones or just part of it? Will it eventually dissolve if you leave it in forever? Does it get smaller while it's inside of you? Or is it just coated in hormones if that's the case then if I bleed and secrete more than a normal Human girl will more hormone wash off the device? ...how does this thing work?!😨

After you get it done you’ll get on and off cramps for the next month but soon you’ll have no pain at all and the coil Actually made my periods less painful but more heavy, rate 10/10

Suddenly you're in tune with your natural cycle, and let me tell you: sex drive goes way up around my fertile window! Sadly, I've had to had the IUD removed because my uterus decided to spontaneously expell it after a year. I don't want to sound 'harsh', but just so other girls aren't scared away - it's because you got the copper once. Hormonal IUDs are way more effective. By over 100%. 1 in 100 woman will become pregnant with a copper IUD each year, while only 1 in 1,000 will become pregnant with a hormonal IUD. Doctors an many scientists aren't even sure how copper IUDs work yet - they just know they work for some. It's speculated whether the copper is slowly released, alkalizing the uterine walls and making it toxic for sperm, or irritating the walls on a monthly basis so that eggs can't attach safely. I hope your delivery was/is successful and that you had a healthy baby.

I’ve got a 5 year Mirena IUD and my insertion was in March 2017. I’m suddenly having crazy abdominal cramps and a 2 Week period which I’ve never had before (and my last period was July 2017). I knew the IUD would cause me to have significantly lighter periods that would eventually maybe even not happen at all soooooo when the OPPOSITE suddenly happened on Christmas Eve, I got scared that something was going wrong.... Thanks to this video, I understand my abnormal bleeding and intense cramping is just an unfortunate side effect that’s happening as my body is coming to terms with the IUD being in me for the next 5 years. I feel relieved that after 1 year, this abnormal period and cramp frequency will behave more. Just got to hang in there 😅

At 3:05 I can definitely confirm the con of initial bleeding being abnormal and initial cramps being horrible. I spent Christmas Day on the floor in front of our Xmas tree clutching myself in fetal position for a solid hour before I could move again.

I've had one for 11 years. After 4 kids, I had to be stopped! It's still working GREAT. Heavier periods and worse cramps, sure, but more kids.. NOPE!

I am 21. I was on the birth control pills from 16 years old - March of 2018. I've had my iud for 4 months and I love it. Insertion hurt like a bitch but after 2 months all the cramping and non stop bleeding went away. I love not having to take birth control every day and I feel more secure than just using condoms. All of the Birth contol pill side effects of mood swings, Low sex drive, bloating, weight gain all went away in days (months for the weight gain). Highly reccomend.
