What I'm fascinated by is how uncontrollable a laugh can be.

Can be ,yes. It's literally a monkey hoot. To hear it objectively can be difficult, like saying a word repeatedly until you bypass the automatic meaning we attribute and you only hear the sound. Laughter is literally just apelike hooting at each other. Imagine if people made a fake "monkey" noise every time they spoke during bonding. Yeah, that's kinda what it sounds like.
