Braking My Roller Coaster

Who could have thought that the boring parts of coasters can be interesting too!
I built a magnetic braking system for a K'Nex roller coaster as both a hobby and academic project. It is fully automatic and is an add-on to the trains I created in the past. My braking system uses a set of magnetic eddy current brakes to slow the train enough to coast onto wheels in the track. The project took six months to complete and opened the doors for a couple future projects I’ve begun working on.

This particular set of trains have a pretty annoying design flaw I'm going to go over a little in my next video. Therefore I'm not planning on making them available. The next generation will fix this issue and I plan on having those available probably by the end of the year. In the meantime if you have any questions I'd be glad to help!

The black and white track is custom made and isn't currently available for sale. The purple and green K'nex track is commonly referred to as screaming serpent track or tube track. I don't believe new kits with it are made anymore, but you can find plenty of sellers on Ebay and similar sites.

Have you ever done anything with micro coasters? I honestly thought about getting into 3d printing to make better Micro cars because of your video on the trains. Micro K'nex coaster suck when it comes to friction and can't make realistic stuff.

I've always preferred the tube track sets over the micro sets mainly because the micro parts are too flimsy. Every idea I've had for them involved strengthening the track first, then making realistic trains after. It may be a future project, but right now my projects focus around the tube track and full sized parts.

I think you should actually replace fins with actual coils and actually create current that you can use for the lift hill or other systems, to reduce energy losses. Kinda like regenerative braking. Also it would be fun to see you build a launch mechanism, you could even make a linear bldc motor, kind of like the one tom stanton had made to launch a paper plane (I'll send link to his vid) kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWW3eJVpgtiGoKc

That's actually a really neat idea! I don't think I would get very much energy back as the trains aren't very heavy and therefore don't carry much energy. But I do like the idea of a launch especially since mechanical launches are so tricky. It's a pipe dream of mine to create a LSM system like he did!
