I remember when the 200 HP Optima Max and Skeeter and Ranger boats were the best. In the earls 80s my family was camping out at Lake Worth Lake in Texas. They had a race out there and like 20 boats lined up all at once and held on to a road. My dad got laughed at when he pulled up to the starting line with a 140 Suzuki strapped on to his Thunderbolt bass boat. He got clocked at 92 MPH. If I remember correctly the second fastest boat was clock at 73 MPH. The race didn’t even look real. Dads boat was a 16’ Thunderbolt with a 10” jack plate and this fin he designed. My step mom worked at a air craft company and one of the engineers made the fin out of Air craft aluminum instead of steal. With the steel fin dads boat would go mid 70s. After the fin was made out of the aircraft aluminum is when it could hit the upper 80s. Back then the speed O on boats were only 65 - 75 MPH. Dad kept breaking his. He got tired of replacing it. It was clocked on Lake Granbury and Lake Worth and 92 mph was the fastest it’s ever been clocked at. After the boat was clocked at 92, he eventually ported and polished the heads and jetted the carbs. He drilled out the oil injectors on the cam to keep the engine cool. The boat was never clocked after the mods. Don’t know how many hours were on the motor but the motor now sit at the bottom of Lake Granbury. Dad and I we’re flying down the lake one early morning and we were WFO as he would say and we seen this motor beside us. The water was smooth as glass. That was the most scariest boat ride we have ever been on in our entire lives. Man that motor sounded so good. Sure miss my dad. We had some great times together. Best times ever were on the lake. Except this one time. LoL!!!

Out of curiosity what types of issues are you having dialing the 200 zuk ss in? Anything to do with propping and torque issues on heavier glass hull's? I would imagine the zuk might be a slouch in the torque department because of those missing glory holes that other brands have in the 200 segment that generate gobs of torque... Just thinking out loud, but very curious.
@jnicks8052 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly the issue. It’s performance ratings stated under a specific load. Depending on application they’re both great. If your needs align with the Suzuki and you have a good dealer in your area. It wins In specific conditions. If the closest authorized Suzuki repair center is 1.5 hours away, get the merc! Another thing, I’d rather have Japanese than American made for any salt water application (not brackish), but salt, mercury has a strong corrosion warranty now, but it’s hard to prove up and actually get work covered (hell they call mercs anchors for a reason) Suzuki and Yamaha are designed with salt in mind.
