27 yr old guy trying to to get his dad fishing from a boat a shared dream of ours since I was a boy got the boat just trying to find the right outboard something I can make a few mistakes with as a first time outboard owner and hopefully keep replacing parts on into my old age with the memories in tow. Mercurys have always seemed to crap a p/h after a bad l/u failers . Learned over the years on these opti that compression tests sometimes looks good but a leak down test shows up problems . Seen compressor bearing fail and crank bearing alinement pins chip or break also. Tuff wen looking at end results after stopping something dead at 6k rpms. Some of these insurance companies have you do some crazy things .

Allowing engines to warm up especially in winter conditions is critical and a thermostat not functioning properly is detrimental.

you insure the boat as a whole then the motor is covered. im assuming insurance gives the value of the motor at market back as cash or pays a portion of the new motor.

My boat and motor are insured.. I just didnt think they would pay for it if I blew it up.. I guess I assumed it was just for theft or traffic accidents or if I sunk it.

Thx for telling us about the fly wheel … was curious. So the engine failed when the gear case failed … and the insurance is inquiring? So the gear case met it’s demise when it came in contact with something? Yeah I wanna see the grand finale.

I can't believe you use magnets on internal parts especially bearings. You will always get some transfer magnetism essentially creating a bunch of metal catchers in the motor if you were rebuilding it. Magnets are A HUGE no no for and serious engine builder
