Any idea about this issue on my 2004 Impreza wagon manual, 156,000 miles? Clutch replaced 20,000 miles ago. Center Differential replaced 200 miles ago. Noise started after center diff replacement, about 100 miles later. Does not make noise in turns (except when coasting). A mild clicking/tapping noise (sounds soft like playing card in bike spoke) is present when coasting in any gear, front main transaxle area (transmission). It varies in frequency and speed, according to the output shaft RPMs, and sometimes it's quieter or not there at all. It's probably a small piece of flat wire from a piece of seal that got away during clutch or center differential replacement. Doesn't seem to affect operations though. Does it about 80% of the time, but is not noticeable 50% of that time. It's quiet enough where talking, dirt roads, road noise, or any stereo masks it. Doesn't make the noise when it's under load...as in forward or reverse gears in play, clutch released. Any ideas, other than debris in case? Thanks!

The diaphragm spring does not have to physicaly pull the plate away from the disk lining during release. All it has to do is relieve its clamping force and clutch is essentually disengaged...just like disc brakes, when brakes are released the linings are still in contact with the disc BUT with no pushing force from the caliper piston. So your pressure plate should be okay. 😊

but the disk and plate are having clearance difference across the different point?

jeez! glad you figured it out!

Is it possible to see the uneven pressure plate fingers just by looking at it or taking some type of measurement before you install it????😮😮😮😮

The tapping noise sounds like mine when I'm driving and shifting gears

Those are drive straps. They pull the casting tight against the diaphragm spring and pull it away from the disc during the clutch release. One possible cause for this failure is if someone dropped the pressure plate casting side down from any (undefined) height like over 3' or so. The straps get deformed from the weight of the casting when it fell and can no longer pull the casting away from the clutch disc. some designs and mfgr's use clips that attach at the drive strap to casting rivets and curl up and hook on to the top side of the diaphragm spring.

I get a severe vibration from my engine bay, when am about releasing the clutch and it reaches the biting point( its worse when am climbing sharp hills or reversing at low rpm between 1000rpm to 800rpm, while on 1st gear, thats when it happens). It only goes away when i press the accelarator pedal a bit and above 1000rpm and speeding or i put it in neutral, it becomes smooth as butter. I changed all my engine mounts and gearbox mounts, changed my clutch plate, changed spark plugs, cleaned my air and fuel line, changed fuel pump, new tires and its still happening. My mechanic says it might be a problem from the clutch pressure plate, but while it was disassemble earlier, by physical observation it was looking mechanically ok. Please, i need advise or help from anyone who knows better or has had similar experience to solve this problem. This is my 1st manual car and it wasn't vibrating this badly when i first got it, now am not too excited driving it. Thanks, ur enlightenment will be greatly appreciated.

Mine is luk ...makes noise when when shifting but only when driving.... Completely silent in neutral.... Pressing the clutch.... It's kind of a boat motor noise when releasing the clutch in each gear... Every single part is brand new and and rebuilt
