I thoroughly recommend it! The reasons behind the rebuild are very interesting. Especially when the prototypes availability figures (time available for service) improved after the rebuild. Another commenter also said this, but I would very highly recommend listening to/watching Railway Mania’s podcast episode on Edward Thompson or reading Peter Grafton’s “Edward Thompson of the LNER.” Both are examinations of Thompson and his engines using contemporary reference material such as actual archived records from LNER/BR days on the engines’ availability figures and time spent in the works. Both are insightful and unbiased, and give the listener/reader a lot to consider on whether or not Thompson is deserving of being remembered the way he is. Also, great review, as usual.😉

Great review. I was sitting tight on making a decision on this. While I'm pleased this unusual loco has been made in model form, the price, quality and livery are a problem. All the other BR Green models in the siding have much better representations of BR Green than the A2/2. Maybe if the price comes down in the future, then I may consider buying it. Been watching your videos over the years and you are progressing wonderfully! The enthusiasm is great dont loose it as you get older! I love the concern over the price. Here on the other side of the pond a pacific is $300.00 on up! The concern over the paint glossiness is fantastic in my mind. Here in the USA even if only one steam engine example remains from a large fleet, unless there is dull paint, lots of rust, blow down residue all over, then there is hell to pay for not looking as it did near end of steam or as delivered all black. Now if you paint the smoke box silver as they did for safety, and looks when shops had time, trim paint the tires /running boards white, then that is a sign of poor restoration. For me, it is a treat to see UK surviving steam engines dressed up! Great videos

The cylinders set back further than normal seems to upset many people, but I've never heard GWR fans complain that Castles and Kings are ugly even though their cylinders are set back in exactly the same way (though not quite so far). Same goes for the Stanier Princess Elizabeth class. Having cylinders between the first and second bogie wheels just looks more natural (Gresley and Peppercorn Pacifics, Collet Hall and Manor classes).

As you know, I already own the Hornby P2 in its non Railroad posh form. I was both miffed and pleased at the same time when they announced two completely new hi-fi toolings of the P2 as the streamlined and the new build Prince of Wales 2007. I missed the fact that this A2/2 was yet a third version this year. I've ordered the first two. Now Hornby have been creating some lovely quality products lately, so this looks like a build quality and paint application disaster. I saw many more wonky components than you actually mentioned. That lining was awful. Someone built yours on a Friday afternoon, after they'd had a pint or three at lunchtime. Now in theory, paint of a said type, colour and lustre, whether applied to smooth plastic or metal, as long as its over a suitable paint primer, should look identical. That's should but isn't apparently. Some quality control issues going wrong here and Hornby should not have let your example out of the factory, but did ? I must say I quite like its appearance, it has some gravitas, but not as much as a P2.

I’m glad the A1 steam loco trust are building a new P2, so that those who didn’t experience them in real life (and seeing as no one has seen one since the 1930s or something, I don’t think there are that many people who are still alive that saw these in LNER days) can do now. Models are one thing but the real thing is just unbeatable. Anyway great video Sam!

Yes i know why Thompson rebuilt them,but what a mess he made of them,just take one figure of 60501,total mileage 978,597,before rebuilding 616,461.after rebuilding 362,136 and it was more or less the same for the rest of others,heres another 60506 between 1945 to 1959 was shopped 30 times,compared to the then veteran Flying Scotsman with 11 visits in the same time,need any more be said,they were the worst LNER pacifics by far.
@thurstablelane75673 жыл бұрын
@@ericholmes8665 I certainly wouldn't argue with the figures, the only thing you can argue with the figures is that 2001-60501 was the first built and will have more mileage overall. But I think with BR the policy was to start removing weaker classes and the A2/2 certainly wasn't on the top of the list. I feel the standing issue is that on any other of the 4 companies the P2's would have been scrapped. But I would like to have known why they didn't think to beef up the crank axle to try and achieve a better performance for the Locos...Guess we will never know.

I like it how, unlike the model railway magazines, you draw attention to the problem of too many of today's models being grossly overpriced. It is irritating when magazine reviews either don't mention the price or claim that it is "justified" despite the level of detail, quality and decoration often being disappointing.
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot mate, yeah I've noticed that too! Bit too much brown-nosing going on these days. Of course the magazines rely on the manufacturers for review samples and advertising £... so it's no surprise they so often fail to notice these obvious inadequacies! ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Hi Sam, this is a very well executed video and goes straight to those areas that are poorly done especially for the price. You are absolutely right about Thompson's carve up of Gresley's P2 which he seemed to think was a problem because of the 2-8-2 wheel arrangement amongst other things. It begs the question of whether he actually understood what was going on in France, Germany and North America at the time when they all built hundreds of mikados to pull passenger and freight. Still, he did do some good, the B1 being one example. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Hi Sam, nice review, as usual. I've received mine during this week. I didn't observe the assembly 'issues' you had and when reviewed after this review, mine is fine - so different to yours. Running, mine is absolutely superb as well - super smooth when very slow and a really fantastic top end. I'm absolutely made up there's no flywheel - creates inertia, and puts more strain on the motor unnecessarily - makes a slow start continued much easier without - we'll agree to differ. Paint - yeuch! Boiler bands - what happened? !! There's a huge void in front of the chassis inside the body - smokebox - which is blanked off - room for more weight. I actually find there's no problems with traction - pulls very well. Tender needed a lot of lead - now much better. I've fitted Springside lamps, Fox's nameplates, and have painted around the smokebox matt black - all makes a big difference - with a Springside crew as well. 'All detailed up' you nearly ignore the paint colour, but not quite!! Do you think this may have been a little 'rushed out' before CNY? Al.

Not excusing the lack of quality but a friend of mine who is in the PPE business was paying £1600 to import a container from China to the UK in January 2020, he is now paying £12000 to ship a container. So shipping costs have increased massively - his business has passed on all the increase to the customer so I imagine Hornby have too.

Sam, I don't think she is ugly. The placement of the steam chests is cancelled out by the 'proper' 2-axle pilot truck (single axle pilot trucks just don't do it for me). I also love that very busy valve gear! But yeah, the finish and lack of die-cast lets her down. Cheers, Dan.

Excellent review Sam 👍 but not so excellent of this model and I feel sorry for to spend so much to buy a loco from Hornby that you were excited to have. You could have bought those four & six wheel carriages from Hornby instead or go for wagon from... well... Bachmann or Hornby. I was interested to get one of these loco, but with so much plastic all over the model, I decided to buy something else like a B17 or Q6 or another Peckett 0-4-0 instead. On a happy note, I’m running my latest model of Bachmann GWR 9400 Class and it running so perfectly and I love it. Now there a model that looks so much impressive.

Hi Sam, another good loco review video. Looking at the tender rear three quarter view, the buffer beam seems to be distorted/twisted towards the near side, making the buffer look downwards. I don't think you mentioned that, sorry if you did. As an observation, as to the running tests you do, I think that you load the locos rather lightly. As an example, in steam days, the train "The Royal Scot" used to consist of 13 coaches. Regards, Alan.

Hornby seems to really not be able to do Brunsick green poperly. The green is too drab, the orange too bright. I've stood next to, hell, I've been ON Brunswick green locos and that orange line across the running plate is nowhere near as noticable as Hornby makes it out to be. Here's to hoping the LNER liveried A2/3s are a tad less flat though!

Looks good, at the start. However, I have a DJH A2/2 as 60505 Thane of Fife (professionally built from the kit, which is super heavy and can handle a 100-wagon train (just about, so around 20 wagons less powerful than the Bachmann 37s, remarkable for a pacific), although it needs more pickups for greater reliability), plus of course the railroad P2 2001 Cock O' The North, so neither of these first two releases are something I would want. If Hornby did a future release of 504 or 506 in LNER green, I'd consider them. I'm considering an A2/3 though, but they're a bit expensive for me without a job atm. It bugs me that there aren't the flanged rear pony wheels included, considering Simon Kohler said in one interview that having the flangeless ones is a compromise but they do include the flanged ones as well, but those driving wheels are incredibly close together. The orange looks a bit too dull, the green is too pale, and all the wonky parts just aren't on. As is the lack of etched nameplates, which should be standard for this quality of model. Heck, my limited edition standard class 7 70000 in original unlined black without nameplates or tender crests or anything included etched Britannia nameplates, for some reason. The back of the tender doesn't look great, seems as though the bufferbeam is wonky, and there's a massive gap between the tender body and the chassis. A lack of at least a pocket for a front coupling is silly, but it is so irritating it has no screw links included at all. Looks like a £160 rrp model, tops, going off modern pricing. However, the green behind the lining of the running plates look nice, and those wing deflectors look great. I hope Hornby do at least 1 A3 with that type in the future, as well as Humorist with the Peppercorn style deflectors too. A lack of flywheel is really odd, considering the railroad peppercorn a1s had flywheels when they were introduced back in 2012 or whenever it was, and that was at a £70 starting price. In other news, the coal tank I ordered after the previous video arrived today. I was very surprised by the weight of it, and the plain black finish is excellent. I tested it on DC using a H&M Duette in my bedroom, ran well and quietly but with some cogging at slow speeds. Took it into the loft, fitted a LaisDCC next18 chip, and set it to run in. It seems more noisy on DCC than DC, oddly, and the rear truck derails on the double slip I have on the up loop/bypass for some reason, but it runs well on the down loop/bypass (except it does keep cutting out in some spots due to it only being 6 wheel pickup. I really need to clean my track properly). And the slow speed on DCC is so much better than DC, no cogging at a slower speed. Etched numberplates are now fitted using a small amount of PVA, so it'll get run some more when my Dapol TPE 68 turns up this week (I was contacted by the shop yesterday to take payment, so it isn't that far away). Still awaiting the GT3...
