Ah, the Rebuilt Hush-hush, known as the"Loud-Loud" by engine crews. Both the LNER and BR were slightly at a loss how to use it, but it usually hauled Leeds-King's Cross expresses. Although quick and reliable, it wasn't as lively as an A4 and not quite as popular with crews as the A4 either. (As the nickname suggested, it was loud even by the standards of a normal steam engine) But it did do a good job, and it was a tragedy that it was withdrawn in 1959.
@andrewchapman20392 жыл бұрын
Super super mild point here: the slope at the front of the tender would technically still help as streamlining even if it's going the "wrong" way. It promotes smooth airflow behind the cab instead of turbulent air, preventing a reverse sucking force from being generated by low air pressure and pulling the locomotive backwards slightly as it moves. Whether this is the actual reason they're there I don't know, all I have is a couple days of experience putting random objects in a wind tunnel.

Dear Hornby: you will make more money if more people can afford your models. Comparing the tender with the tender on my original Hush Hush, it looks like the same tender but with streamlined modifications. The performance reminds me of my original one (I was lucky to get a good one). If your rebuilt one is like my original one, the performance will continue to improve. I've had a similar story to you really. Dodgy un-rebuilt W1 that I sent back. The main difference though is that they sent me a new un-rebuilt W1 and it ran far smoother. It's actually one of the smoothest in my collection. I think what happened is that Hornby rushed the pre-order W1s so that they can get to their customers before Christmas, seeing as the model had various delays. (I pre-ordered mine back when the model was first announced so I actually got mine for £200). Now though I think all W1s that Hornby will make are going to be the same quality. We just had to wait for another month of production.

Yes mukka, I'm very angry with the gouging a&$#holes at Hornby. I ordered the complete APT train last year with a reputable retailer. Prior to Xmas I received all the extra coaches I had ordered (but not the 5 car set with a powercar & driving trailers) Then this month the retailer said the five car set was soon to be sent to me but, the price had shot up! I was stuck... I almost told them to jam it where it should hurt but then I would have been stuck with all the extra coaches! (I suppose I could have modelled a scrap yard where most if the coaches ended up in reality but I had already spent a fortune!) Not having much choice I have paid the extra funds to acquire the 5 car set to complete the train. I am not happy at all... very disgraceful business sense. I won't be buying any more Hornby stock any more. Will just stick to the second hand market from now on. Thanks for an interesting review. I have replaced the wheels with proper ones and as such made the loco to a static display model now. Stay safe. Regards from Oz. Gaz

Another great review Sam! I think you've shown over and over that you can take apart a loco and put it back together without breaking it. People should stop giving you a hard time and enjoy your videos instead. What type of coach are you basing your calculations on at the end in the score sheet? I was able to get both the W1 and the rebuild W1 to reliably pull 29 Mark 1 coaches, so your calculation of 33 is pretty close... You can see it in action at kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGGof3V9Ypx8mJY ... looking forward to your next video!
@SamsTrains2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much John - I don't take those trolls very seriously! When I gathered all the data for the coach testing, I used a mixture of all the coaches from my collection - so this included modern coaches with fine metal wheels, and also older ones with the chunkier plastic ones... the idea being that my numbers can give a good rough indication of what a loco will manage regardless of the coaches. It's not 100% accurate though of course - and my figure only works for straight and level track (which is less useful, but that's where the tests were conducted) Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Glad to see you have a working example and happy to know you are getting a third one. Does seem like a great loco this time round. I would personally not give 5 star on the detail without firebox flicker or something like that. The window on the rear of the tender is atrocious too. The valve gear is a particular highlight though. Your use of the P2 is actually perfect as they shared the same/very similar boiler type post W1 rebuild. Unfortunately after my two 812's and APT I can't justify it for the price. Nevertheless, I'm still happy to have 2 812's and no W1. The APT always holds a special place in my heart and whilst there are some things I'd have hoped to have for the money I'm very happy with it. It's very expensive but then again it is an entire train. Do you have any plans to do any DMU/EMU's at all? Your Derby Lightweight review inspired me to get one. Aware though that you can often do 2 steam/diesel engines for the price.

As usual, the tender rear porthole is clearly assembled on the wrong side ! That's a mistake I had not done at the age of 12 with my WWII plane models... Good mechanism, nice drivetrain except for the Cartazzi axles at the end, not touching the tracks, but fair performance. Except the dull finish, the rear axles in the air and the tender porthole assembled inside out, it's a nice engine. Problem : RRP of GBP 240. Shall not be above GBP 170 to be acceptable on such an engine. That's the no-go for me. I'm in for Hornby's forthcoming 9F and Black Five (and the reissue of their BoB, and I hope they will not screw the retailer like what they have done here. By the way, great move to warn us about the speedo mounting while opening the engine. I take your advice about the V2 difficulty of opening to buy a DCC fitting service from Rails of Sheffield, GBP 15 for this is always cheaper than a messed-up engine (The Model Centre offers this too). I'm expecting my V2 next week, I'll see her on DCC for the firebox light, I'll lete you know.

Ahhhhh £220 that's $440 NZ plus freight. I'm not a steam lover but if I was, and I know other modelers that love their steam locomotives, that would mean I'd have to buy Bachmann or Heljan. The price of Hornby's locomotives cannot keep going up before they over price themselves out of the market. $400 plus dollars for a locomotive NO WAY!

Good to see you have an actual "silk purse" at last. Is it worth the money - how can it be? If the criteria for paying £200.00 + is that the unit works, I'm sorry they should all work, whatever the price. They should all have metal handrails which don't snap when you pick the thing up. like the plastic moulded "wire" Hornby cares for so much,. You may have gathered I don't care for Hornby much, any more. My problem, I know, but keep up the good work and keep on outing poor manufacturing or customer service. ?I wonder if Hornby still send out their loco's in "rattle boxes"? All the best Chris.

I got one of these because it would be rude not to. It’s pretty sweet, but a shame it doesn’t have the gloss finish of the Locomotion Mallard Ltd Edition. The original streamlined W1 got scrapped prematurely by BR because it didn’t have a spare boiler to swap in at overhaul time. And the LNER region were over-efficient at scrapping loco’s, presumably due to lack of space. But the actual corridor tender off the W1 still exists on No. 9 “Union of South Africa”.

As always, a thoroughly competent and articulate review, but maybe a little too forgiving. When 10-coupled locos like a 9F can perform with all flanged wheels, it is absolutely unforgivable that Hornby could not better design the traiing wheels on this W1. That is an abomination - at ANY price. For me, truly and sadly, that fatal flaw makes it a definite "Don't buy". It's a crying shame.

In my opinion, pretty ridiculous pricing for what is a very basic plasticky model with no special features, eg no firebox glow, no lighting. And those rear wheels are just ridiculous, I don't understand why Hornby keep using this stupid design on UK models, Rivarossi, Electrotren models (which are Hornby as well) have proper flanged rear wheels that swivel, without any major gap either.

This review makes me kinda disappointed. Not because your review was bad or the loco was bad, your review was great as always and the loco performed greatly. However, this is my least favourite of the two Hush Hush designs, I much prefer the unrebuilt, and it makes me sad that THAT loco was the worse performer, and even bigger shame that other people's Hush Hush's that I watched on KZbin had theirs working ok when yours was an unlucky Tart class. I hope one day in the future if the prices are down you'd get another unrebuilt that has better luck than your last experience, but for now I can make do with this one. Great review as always Sam

@brettmartin67272 жыл бұрын
It's slowing on corners and struggling to haul the load requiring a minimum of 50% power despite spun bearings and a flywheel. Those things are window dressing. The mechanism features a motor which is too small for the purpose and clearly there are issues with friction loses (frame and powertrain?). Anyway it adds up to another cheap poor mechanism and I disagree with the high rating (purely subjective of course). Looks like I'll be relying on white metal kits and hoping I can do a better job - the latest OO Guage RTR Steam Locos are very poor. I really can't stand the pony truck issue, hire competent engineers please Hornby and Bachman.

Sorry Sam but I wish people would stop saying ‘unrebuilt’. It’s a poor use of English - it’s either ‘original condition’ or ‘rebuilt’. You can’t ‘unrebuild’ something. And the handrails are clearly metal, just try gently bending them, it would be ultra clear if they were plastic.

Time and time again in business a big player incumbent, monopoly or duopoly believes they have the market to themselves. They get lazy, greedy and complacent. Along comes a disrupter and boom, it's all over. The good will has been pissed up the wall, the retailers aren't making margins and are being treated like... some sort of second, or third class, or tiered citizen. It has to happen. Modern manufacturing, an increasingly informed and educated customer base - means that hopefully soon hornby and bachmann will get a kick up the rear end, and they'll stop taking punters and retailers for mugs.

I assume they loosened the screws on the rear bogie for the catalog picture, the axle center is far more visible there

When is a W1 "Hush Hush" no longer a W1 "Hush Hush" ? Answer ...when it has been rebuilt into a streamline loco .

Dear sam After all these high end highly expensive models of late, would you consider reviewing a modern railroad model ?
@class28studios782 жыл бұрын
I like to think that Hornby fixed the problem with the chassis (maybe that's why the price is higher)

Hi Sam. Is the reversing rod connected properly? I can see a hole in it which looks like it should be pressed onto a tab? John.

HI Sam I got the price wrong, they charged me it was a £197. not the £179 that said before. regards.

When China isn't the manufacturer and back to the UK, only then will I buy a Hornby.

A good review and it's nice to see that it's such an improvement on the original. Like others, I thought the tender corridor window looks as if it's meant to be fitted on the inside.

Honestly I don't think I would have bought one of these at the original price the quality is just not there for me

Did Hornby produce a “Union Of South Africa” livery?

I really didn't know how the W1s are using A4 boilers

I think surely any loco that wheels don’t touch the rails should get a huge reduction in mechanism? It looks terrible.
@whitewallwheels1hardcore.m_o_h2 жыл бұрын
could you put both locos together and show us the length of the mallard bodyshell and the new rebuilt hush hush bodyshell
@SkyeSoarer042 жыл бұрын
the hush hushes tender still survives as it is being carried by union of South Africa so the hush hush still kinda survives
@svenschulz38672 жыл бұрын
It looks like they have fitted the tender window from the wrong side. Must be glued from inside?

wonder if it possible to swap the bodies around, so you could have the original body on a working chassis
