Having built several 1/350 scale, and even a few 1/200 scale ship models, I can tell you that they are a long project, at least for me. I still have the 1/200 scale Yamato to finish that I have been working on for almost 2 years now. Having the hull in 2 halves looks crazy to me. The 1/350 Yamato I built by Trumpeter, has a one piece hull. It's so much nicer that way! Anyway, thanks for the review. 👍

Yeah they are definitely a commitment - My average build time for a battleship 1/350 is close to 9 months. I will sometime punctuate the build with a quick 1/72 basic aircraft build just the break the build up a little

Amazing kit and a terrific review, MN. I built the Tamiya Musashi a long time ago when upgrades weren't readily available and it turned out ok. This kit is on a different level with all those extras but I do agree with your sentiment that it can be built basically but adding those parts from the Deluxe version to enhance the model. All that PE gives me the shivers :b.

Definitely a less common subject. The hull is quite different, with a large flat bottom - which probably explains why it is divided that way.

Hello Stu, what a huge incredibly detail model., looks like a long time build. The only ship model I've built is the Cutty Sark and I have a very vintage Flying Cloud in my stash. However, I have studied the pivotal time in history of the air battles agaisnt these large battleships, The amazing aspect is the fact that the Japanese did not have much success with these Juggernauts. As with the German counter parts. I believe it was a matter of support deployments. Someday it would be interesting to build the Yamato, Bismarck and an Iowa class for a display. The Yamato and Musahi had a cousin the Shimano, laid down as a battleship but switcheda to a carrier. I'm glad you posted a new video, I'm stuck on getting some paints for a couple of models on a soon to build list and wanted your advice. The main problem is a B-58, followed by an XB51, " vintage model century series" and possibly my JU 52. The B-58 requiring the most difficult work as it is a highly polished aluminum , the XB 51 is the early phase century series metal , and if course you know the difficulty of the fuselage of the Ju 52 . The metallization paints have changed since my reentry and there are so many metal paints on the market with primer and varnish coats I have no idea where to start Do you have a recommendation you find successful, of all the paints silver Al Silver is the most difficult I used to use Floquil Some research indicates Alclad but I'm confused on the process of base coating, thinning and varnish ( gloss, Stain ,Matt) Thanks in advance for any recommendations you have). Always a pleasure to watch your videos, Cheers Bob
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 4 ай бұрын
Hi Bob. Thanks for your comments. I've never done a highly polished metal finish. For my recent EF-126 I used Vallejo Metal Colors. Although they are acrylic, I find they spray really well. But as I say, I was going for a more weathered, flatter aluminum look. Have you considered Tamiya rattle cans? I don't think you would get a mirror finish with those, but you could get decently shiny (like my recent McLaren). If you want more polished than that, I believe Alclad is highly rated. I don't know about varnish for it though - do Alclad make their own maybe?

A friend of mine is building the deluxe Yamato and I am sure it will make a stunning model but a few words from his experience so far. As you say it is a lifetimes work, or at least a mega build. I would also say you have to be a really competent modeler to deal with lots of small parts and in particular the photo etch. Painting the model requires hours of masking. There is also a lot of repetitive building for the AA guns and other smaller guns etc. For me it would be months of work.

@@ModelNerd There is a guy on YT (Ebroin) who is making a super detailed 1/350 Tirpitz. I think from the Revell kit. It is amazing work as the kit is not too accurate. I think if you were to build it you could do a series on the build but i think you would have to be careful not to run into too many episodes.

I have Taamiya's old 1/350 Musashi, and this one does seem to account what was discovered from the 2015 expedition, such as the 'map cabin', (as named in Janusz Skulski's updated Anatomy Of The Ship of Yamato, and Musashi) which is in front of her upper main 15.5 metre rangefinder on her bridge. Musashi took longer to complete, because she was to be Vice Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku's flagship. I also own Akira Yoshimura's book on Musashi titled, 'Build The Musashi. I intend to convert her to how she was originally outfitted. I also own the 2005 film about Yamato, Otoko Tachi No Yamato, which they built a partial full scale set of her, which is impressive. This model looks even better than Tamiya's current iteration of their 1/350 Yamato. Take care, and all the best.

I would try to get a wood deck, but don't fancy so much detail...still wondering whether i have any space in the stash, let alone the finished model. This would be one of my largest ones (second to the 800 mm Dora railgun in 1:72?). The Leopold in 1:35 is pretty big too and I have a 1:35 type XXIII sub...

what you have here is a lot of super detail that you won't notice, especially the PE on the tiny guns and even the PE on the turrets, but you do need the railings on the turrets....... this is over modelled........... put this PE would be needed on 1/200 and larger, you want a cross between the standard simple kit and maybe only 1/2 of the PE.......... but you definitely need the railings and ladders....... i think i prefer 1/500 but i'm so confused................ i think about the same as you............ but if one is not sure 1/500 would look better with the PE missing....... you have an excuse for not showing it if you see what i mean........... last time i tried PE on Yamato i couldn't do it, i could only do the railings etc................ this i'm afraid is a huge warning............ your video is very good.
