Brand New MOTOR MOUNTS For My Cheap Fiat 500 Abarth *Is It Fixed?*

I was almost back to Kansas when I came up on boost in my 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth and it started shuddering. I replaced the spark plugs in the 1.4L 4 cylinder Multiair engine from Dodge and that didn't fix the problem. The motor mounts were trash so I ordered a set of those and some people mentioned that would fix the problem. Today we're replacing them and taking it out for a test drive.

This is a prefect demonstration of why these cars are only for do-it-yourselfers and not for the general public. Replacing a dozen parts to stop a shudder is not something most want to do.These cars are really tough to fix. I suspect we will get to watch a lot of repairs over time with JR - much more than any other car he owns. Fiats are notorious for that.

What year and what models are you talking about. We see more toyotas and hondas in our shop for majors. Blown head gasket, blown radiators, sludge, oil/fuel dilution, transmissions, clutches. CV joints, ball joints, etc.

While it does happen to Toyota and Honda in a few cases, if the cars are maintained, it does not happen on a wide basis.

Yep. Usually the passenger side breaks then the other 2 a fail short while later. It's worse on the Abarth mostly because people tend to slam them harder, plus the non turbo has 98 lbs of torque vs 170.

JR you tightened that mount to 3 grunts when it clearly called for 2 grunts. Over grunting motor mounts will lead to premature failure. Most likely what happened to the old mounts.

​@@JT-un7dc I do not know you, so excuse me if you know more than me, and my 1999 Honda may be completely different than your vehicle, but I replaced these and various other parts when I changed my timing belt a bit over a year ago, and they failed. My kit came with bolt gaskets and washers. I spent far too long removing those the first time. Pry them apart with a flathead, cut off the old gasket, slide off the old washer, and I have seen two ways to install the new washers and gaskets. Some tap them into place with a 12mm socket, but I think that twists the rubber too much. Mine seemed to hold, but the other way is to use a small flathead screwdriver to stretch the gasket around the flange. I do not know the terms. Hopefully this makes sense. I used a flathead to separate the washer and gasket, slid on the washer, and then used the flathead to stretch the gasket over the end. I could not see any clear instructions on which way the plug seals go, but as far as I can tell, you are supposed to have metal-on-rubber on all sides. If you install it the other way, there is a ring of air between the valve cover and the seal, and I do not believe that is correct. 1AAuto says to use a pocket screwdriver to flange the seal around the tube. You need to make sure the seal is around the tube. When you install the bolts and tighten, go carefully and evenly. I think mine got pinched last time, which might be why they failed. Hopefully this fixes my problem. From what I can tell, if this does not work, I need to remove the rocker arm assembly and replace the seals underneath. 7.2 ft-lbs for the valve cover bolts and 13 ft-lbs for the spark plugs. Who torques spark plugs?! After all of this, I am not taking chances! :)

@@drippingwaxwich engine do you have? on my vehicle wich is a 97 accord with the B22 16 valve. There are two sets of spark plug seals. One is directly under the valve cover and the other set is under the valve assembly. If you only changed one set of tube seals then that could be why it failed. Also prying on the new gaskets with a flat head could have knicked the rubber hence causing it to fail. Check out eric the car guy on you tube. He has a video for spark plug tube seals that is very informative. The first set of seals is fairly simple remove valve cover and change. NOW, the second set underneath the valve body is a lot more tricky. you will need to remove the whole valve body assembly in a specific pattern to replace these seals wich are underneath the valve assembly. Then use a torque wrench in a specific bolt pattern to reassemble the valve assembly. Then you should adjust the valves before putting the valve cover back on. Hopefully this helps you out. I also watched a video by peanutbutterman on spark plug tube seals here on you tube that's was very informative. Hopefully this will help you. Feel free to ask me anything else. Good luck

@@JT-un7dc It is the F23A1 and I think that Eric's video was for the fourth-generation Accord. Briansmobile1 has a similar video for a wagon of the same generation, but from what I can tell, it is the same for the sixth-generation. Eric said you can replace the top gaskets and if it works, consider yourself lucky. As I mentioned, I replaced the top seals, but they got pinched. All four were definitely bad. Maybe I should replace the bottom ones, but I am not removing the rocker assembly if I do not need to. I drove from one location to another for work and my car was still misfiring, but it cleared up when I drove back. The CEL has not returned so far. Do problems ever go away on their own? I did not replace the spark plugs or clean them meticulously. There was probably still some oil in the wells. It is possible the engine misfired until it burned off the oil (and poisoned the catalytic converter).

I keep a couple of 1-1/4” x 1/8 wall pieces of steel tubing in my tool box. One is 24” long, the other is 48” long. They slide right over all of my breaker bars and socket wrenches including my 3/4” drives. I have all the leverage I need. With my 3/4” breaker and the 4-footer, I can change the wheels on a Peterbilt.

Silliest tightest thing I ever saw was a hydraulic ram for a dump truck. Needed a repack. Guy named joey was hanging off feet of cheater bar, literally hanging, and bouncing for “impact”, while one other guy held a rosebud on the nut and a third beat it with a hammer. Went on for hours. Didn’t get to see it put back together due to a lovely heart attack a couple of days later. But it was an epic fight.

Might I recommend a set of magnetic sockets? They make them in deep well also. They're great for installing/removing hardware in hard to reach areas. I got a set on amazon for like 60 bucks.

Anchor mounts are trash! I wouldn't use them! I installed a set and the NVH level in my vehicle went way up! Lots of vibrations in the dash and floor pan areas. I took them out and installed a set of OEM mounts and it was quiet and vibration free once again.

Just warning to all people never by anchor motor mounts I got some for Dodge Stratus years ago when I had a Dodge Stratus and within a couple months after installing them I had to replace them cuz they're already cracking and coming apart and I upgraded to carquest ones and I did not have the problem ever again. The rubber compound anchor motor mounts use sucks.

Buddy, anchor makes ALL aftermarket mounts. They are OEM quality. The problem is you had a stratus. Those are pure junk and never good. I've worked in parts for 11 years and on cars for 12

Anchor motor mounts are garbage. They are certainly not made to the same specifications as OEM. I always advise customers to go OEM for motor mounts if they could afford it.

@@thagerdorn2009 Dude.... Here's merely one of many examples of Anchor's low quality. I purchased four of the same part number and all were made to a different spec and size (up to .25" variance). Three of the incorrectly spec'd mounts caused extreme vibration that wasn't present prior to installing the new mounts. Finally, the forth mount eliminated the vibration entirely. How's that for quality control. There is a reason why they are a fraction of the cost of OEM mounts.

Did you ever contemplate that CV axle is the cause ? Getting into the throttle would lift the front end causing the shimmy ? If you feel it through the steering wheel then that’s it , in my opinion .

You don't exactly feel it through the steering wheel, more of through the seat. So weird, now the shudder seems to have moved to lower gears. I'll check the CV for play next for sure 💯

Jay M The fact that you “phoned” them tells me this was a very long time ago (they have no phone number now) I’ve ordered close to $10k in parts from them in the last 4yrs and have only ever had a couple minor mistakes. The one time I got a water pump for a Honda when I had ordered for a Ford V8, turns out the box had been mislabeled by Gates, they rushed me the correct pump free of charge and never even asked for the Honda pump back, my return was as easy as e-mailing them a few pics of the wrong part and wrong label on the box. Much better then any other auto parts supplier I’ve ever dealt with.

I have a 2010 Ram 3500 with 263k and a 2012 fiat 500 with 120k. Both have been good vehicles. I maintain them well.
