this console was ahead of its time. gamecube and ps2 could run games on 480p , while this machine could output at 720p and even 1080i in some games, and we are talking about an 20 year old console. crazy

I know! Tell me about it... it was a real wrench! The problem was that the second hand used xbox's I could find where all in, well, used condition.... I really wanted to have that feeling of opening a new console. My heart was definitely beating faster!

I actually own an original Xbox that's in very nice condition, and works flawlessly. I redid the thermal paste to prevent overheating and removed the clock capacitor as it had started to leak. It has to be my favorite old console, right next to the Dreamcast.

@@jasonnee1659 a capacitor that retains information in the CMOS, which is where the time-telling stuff occurs. In most other devices, the CMOS is passively powered via a coin cell battery

I bought the original Xbox a year ago. I'm a retro gamer and this is a god sent for retro gaming, unknown to many. It's unbelievable how it can handle emulations so well. It's the real thing!

Enjoy but be careful and get the clock capacitor removed because it is known to mess up and fry the console. This is due to how old the system is even though u got a new one

@@retro-unboxing You should try and do a JTAG modification on one of your xbox's running the blades dashboard since there are two types of hard mods an RGH (Reset Glitch Hack) mod and a JTAG mod (Joint Test Action Group) Both hard mods allow you to run unsigned code, emulate code and while I don't condone this yes rip games and play pirated games or make the console region free which is what I like about it so if I wanted to play games that don't work here in Australia such as Japanese Games I can. Now whats better? J-Tag's are very rare now days and go for heaps you can only do them if they are running a certain dashboard such as yours and also jtags are better because of good boot times and more stability You can read more online but that's a thought, You can find many videos online to do it, It is just about finding a rare Original J-Tag kit from Team Xecutor because while they stopped making them if you look hard enough you'll be lucky!!!

23:39 PAL-60 doesn't apply to the dashboard, as far as I know, but only to games that support it. Also, if you softmod your console, get an HD AV pack, and change the region to NTSC (you'll still be able to play PAL games, in any language), you can enable 480p/720p/1080i (although some games require a patch on 1.6 motherboards). Speaking of which, if yours isn't a 1.6 Xbox, you must remove the clock capacitor or it will leak and cause damage (it's probably a 1.6 anyway).

Well to be fair the xbox 360 came out in 2005 and had component, and 360 Elite shipped with HDMI in 2007. God knows why Sony didn't put one in the box considering the PS3 was a blu ray player!?

Great Vid, and I love that beautiful Xbox! However that seal had 1000% been previously opened, CLEAR AS DAY. At 4:00 flat you can clearly see that the entire bottom of the sticker pulled the paper print off box and was repressed millimeters lower than the graphics around it. They only opened the rear of the seal to pull the tab. Even the white from under the rip is clear as day just from the freeze of a single frame of this video. I am actually pleased however you did not open a properly factory sealed one, this will suffice for a complete unboxing in original form👍. This was at best a well kept slightly open beauty, mabye never removed from the box... But it was definitely opened at the seal. Thanks for the upload.

Thanks for the video, I have recently ordered a very well kept boxed Xbox, should arrive today. Very excited as I haven't owned one since I was about 20 back in 2007. The clock capacitor has already been removed which is a plus, these capacitors store power run the internal clock while the console has no external power. Unfortunately these capacitors are of poor quality and have around a 10 year self destruct cycle where they leak acid all over the circuitry and likely damage the circuit traces. Also picked up a custom made RGB SCART cable just for the occasion, it's going to look sweet. Later revisions of the Xbox had a 10GB hard drive. For Halo 1 on Xbox it is best kept at 50hz because you will see slight periodic skipping in the in-game video with Pal60 mode. Honestly the PAL console is best left in Standard 50hz and Standard 4:3 screen settings, SO many games either already had PAL tweaks and such poor wide-screen support that enabling these modes revealed subtle and sometimes not obvious graphical issues, so much so that it is not worth the hassle trying to figure out which games are better on which settings. Enjoy your brand new purchase. Since it's been several months, any particular games you have newly discovered worth mentioning?

I’ve really fallen back in love with that!! Regarding the clock cap, if I’m honest I’m just going to risk it... the thought of dismantling the console fills me with dread!

@@retro-unboxing That is fair enough :) I was sweating all over when doing it for a friend a couple of years back, my first foray into the Xbox insides. There was a feeling of dread that I would kill it ^^. But for future reference, if your console stays turned on when plugged in and the power button does nothing, it means acid has eaten the power buttons circuit traces ^^. My console arrived earlier and I compared the standard AV cable that came with the console and a £25 RGB SCART cable from retrogamingcables.co.uk on both my 10 year old Samsung LCD TV and 20 year old Sharp 14inch CRT TV and can say that RGB SCART is the clear winner. The image is clean and crisps on both TVs and I really don't think I will mind playing on my LCD screen permanently. Had to play with the TV settings though and turn off all enhancements, there is also the drawback of high ms causing that motion blur on an LCD TV. The £25 cable is worth it if you do plan to buy more games for OG Xbox. Halo: Combat Evolved looks as awesome as I remember it to be.

If it was from 2006 (unless the World Cup, like the FIFA Games, take place the year prior to what it says 🤷 🤣) then that would be a year AFTER the Xbox 360 came out, going off the American Launch of that System that is... The OG Xbox is good in terms of running it today on modern TVs since it did 480p and even 720p on some games but I'm happy I grew up with (and still have) the PS2, can't beat the games (and not just First Party, that was a time where Third Party's often launched their games exclusively on a certain platform and PS2 was the go to for all of it 👍)

@@retro-unboxing Well, I'd strongly advise at least softmodding it and backing up the EEPROM. That way, you can replace the hard drive if it fails. Otherwise I believe your Xbox would essentially become bricked and require a modchip to get it operational again if the drive died.

Hi Dave, it was just a Samsung 1080p Argos special... it was nice enough and had components for composite inputs. I sold it just before Xmas. I think it was a Series 5 something or other, I sold it to replace it with a monitor.. hope this helps.
