That mower was engineered with a shear spindle, that saved your deck when you hit the drain clean out! Looks like you were prepared for that type of failure. Glad it is back together because spring is just around the corner!

I have ove too, but it’s a I don’t remember the brand!,, I am thinking I will attempt to make a tracked small Dozer, it is a 2 cylinder water cooled Hydrostat transmission single wheel in the rear and to drive wheels in the front husky or something like that it’s called,,,might be a good little play tractor, lol thanks BigAl California

When I started an L&G dealership for a guy in northwest IL, we used to sell cub cadets, white, and Dixon mowers. The best thing to preserve the deck belt and the spindles is to delete those belt guards. Sticks and etc. get under there and then go under the belt in the sheave. As a dealer, we did not do that but would suggest that some have found it to preserve parts. Just like the reverse switch that opened the deck clutch when backing up. We would point out the tab and say some take a long screwdriver and bend that back out of the way so the deck will not disengage in reverse. That was basically on the MTD-made mowers. The Dixon ZTR mowers which were our best seller did not have that switch. The Dixon's were the choice of the dead, as cemeteries were our biggest customers. We also sold 3 hp 12" mowers that were used to mow between tombstones. We used to demonstrate the Dixon mowers and when we were told that the Wisconsin JD dealer was going to be bringing a demonstrator mower we asked if we could be there at the same time. He began to hate us as his garden tractors did not come close to what the Dixons did. BTW, use Meyer Snow Plow paint after you clean under your deck. It lasts a lot longer. We had one customer who moved out from Chicago. A big executive type and every building on the place had a security pad. He decided to do the farmer thing and mow his own grass. After he had it for a couple of weeks I made a service call to do basic maintenance on it. I joked that his wife might be fighting him to get to mow with it. He laughed and said she never did any "dirty work" in her life. They had household staff to do it. Well, she heard that and the next time I was there she was doing the mowing. She said it was fun. Herb was a great guy to go beyond the normal for him. I used to armor all his mower every time I was there. He always gave a president as a tip. Good old Benjamin Franklin.

Ok the 550 tractor, is the exact tractor that, I have a 1959 I believe,, not positive would it be possible, to fix the transmission throw out bearing or PTO shaft coupling with out splitting it,,,something has came loose in the tranny area ,and it vibrates to beat all heck like a vibrator, as soon as it revs RPMs ,can you tell me anything about the 550 or 555 idont even remember,, what you said .thanks BigAl California, …
