Just so you know, TheZZAZZGlitch has made a video series about trying to complete gen 1 pokemon in the minimum amount of A presses possible. It's pretty interesting, mainly because it documents a lot of the various Any% No Save Corruption routes for Pokemon while explaining them well.

The collision system is fairly inaccurate for this game. This becomes obvious in a tool-assisted speedrun because I can have Mario come as close to the Pirahna Plant as possible without dying.

If he runs straight off the end of the platform, he will *not* fall down where the entrance of the pipe is. Instead, he will end up on top of the pipe. The only way to avoid this is to stop holding B or to jump. If he stops holding B, then he's going to get an extra "press" from holding it down again anyway, so he decided to go with a jump.

This run could theoretically end with a half A press.

In this specific speedrun category presented on this video, when you hold the A button for x seconds, it counts as pressing the button just one time. A half A button press means you would hold the A button, to not need to click the A button again, a thing that on this category, unlike just holding the A button, would count as another A press. So yes, every time he press the button for more than one frame, this would be equivalent of what that other video call an half press.

you could have held a on stairs to get to flagpole with one less a press in 1-1 edit: also, you could get one less a press at 2:38 by doing a full jump
