sort of unrelated but also sort of related since it was the actual second super mario bros game, why didn't super mario bros special use scrolling on the pc-88 or the sharp x1 versions?

@@oliverolive2761 The PC-88 featured high resolution, low color graphics with no hardware scrolling, at least at first. Similar to the MSX, hardware scrolling was introduced in later models, the PC-88VA specifically. The story is the same with the X1, with hardware scrolling introduced with the X1turboZ model. Because hardware scrolling was introduced so late into these computers' lifespans, you tend to not see games taking advantage of the features, especially with the X1.

I would love to play this game but I am a hopelessly casual player, so I won’t make it to the second world. Is there some way to hack it on 3ds VC to have infinite lives so dying is a setback rather than a game ender? It looks like it would be fun if I had the ability to explore it.

@@brare45996 does 3ds vc have savestates? If so that'd be the best option. Otherwise, you can try to do the infinite 1-up trick on the first red koopa in 1-1. It's pretty easy spot to do it, if you find a vid of it and copy it you should get it in a few tries. Get like 100 1-ups and move on, if you go over 127 you will wrap to -128 lives

This TAS has some very interesting concepts. Solutions are good overall. My biggest concern is that it doesn't look very optimized entertainment-wise and speed-wise, so to me it looks more like a demo than a final TAS, but I'm certainly happy that someone has made it. :)

Honestly this is exactly what keeps me away from posting it to TASvideos. I've watched it countless times and every time I do I find stuff I could've improved. I managed to almost save 2 A presses in the past month so maybe I'll end up remaking the whole TAS and make it more entertaining as well as optimizing it for speed. A Warpless D-4 version of the ABC is also a project I want to work on in the future

You can't clip through stairs. The only known way is in SMB1 and it requires a specific setup with a specific gravity as well as an enemy, which you don't have here
