This movie suddenly gets much more adorable when you realize... Because these rats are actually dogs wearing costumes... Whenever a "victim" gets tackled and eaten, they're actually getting their faces licked by a bunch of little doggos!

My mom told me a story of how when she and my dad were walking through New York she glanced in a window of a closed down restaurant and commented about how a dog got in there. My dad looked and they realized it was actually an absolutely massive rat because back then New York had a huge huge rat problem. I don’t know if that’s the case any more, I know there’s rats but I don’t know if the big ones are still a problem. After you pointed out the rats being dogs in costumes I noticed that you can actually see their little gallop when they run and sometimes it seems like there’s a tail wagging under the costume, they must’ve had fun. It’s really cute and a cool way to have giant rats interact with people.

Fun fact: the girl who’s crushing on the teacher is played by Lisa Langlois who was in another fantastic 1982 exploitation movie called “Class of 1984.” She plays a member of a teenage gang who wage a gang war against the newest teachers. It was co-written and directed by Mark Lester, who would work on “Firestarter” and “Commando.” It was also co-written by Tom Holland who would direct “Fright Night” and “Child’s Play.” It was also one of the first roles of Michael J. Fox. It’s pretty awesome.

The creepy thing here is that there ARE rats this big. They are called wharf rats and I often see them in Long Beach here in California. They are literally the size of a medium size dog. But they are nowhere near this aggressive.

ghostofkrows Capybaras are from South America, not Africa. They are also not rats, though they are rodents. They're closer in relation to guinee pigs. They are also herbivores, so they are usually much more harmless than the omnivorous rats.

@varanid9
@varanid9 6 жыл бұрын
watch it on a bigger screen and you'll think otherwise. Besides, The Killer Shrews was a faster, tighter directed film. And, though I also think dressing dogs up as rodents is silly, I suppose an argument could be made that, if an animal is going to get that big, in order to move fast, the laws of physics dictate that it should develop along those lines, but, I would be putting way too much thought and logic into movies like these.
@DeepEye1994
@DeepEye1994 6 жыл бұрын
No, when I saw Killer Shrews I immediately said "Wow, those are fucking dogs covered in drags, they didn't even try" and the puppets from that movie also sucked. At least here when the rats move they kinda look like real rats and the animatronics are more animated.

Then again, with all the environmentalist attacks going on now, I think they would be the perfect candidate apart from crocodiles and hawks to launch an all-out attack on the human race. In the DVD BTS interviews the director said it was a myth that the movie was based off the book The Rats. It was just a rumor spreading about the movie's inspiration. The director said he based the movie off of the Corman B-horror Piranha being on land rather than water. Piranha was, in turn, based off of Jaws. All three movies carried the same formula; somebody dies at the opening, then someone figures out what's happening, the authorities are unconvinced, more people die, the heroes have to take them on themselves.

Those obviously-dachshunds hade the opposite of their intended effect on me. When the movie shows a horde of mutant creatures going in for the kill, I don't think, "Awww" is the response the creators had in mind. I just imagine the crew before each scene having to put halloween costumes on a herd of squirming weener dogs. All the fake blood in the world can't compete with that amount of cuteness.

At 3:09, that is obviously the Old City Hall building (now a courthouse) in downtown Toronto at the Bay St. and Queen St. West intersection with the cenotaph in the foreground of the shot showing the American flag. One can see a modern glass building in the distance which is part of the Eaton Centre mall complex.

Fun fact: Daiei also tried to make a killer rat movie at one time called Giant Horde Beast Nezura. However, plans for Nezura fell through and the film was cancelled. Recently, Kadokawa is planning a biopic movie called Nezura 1964 about the troubled production of said killer rat movie.

James Herbert's book is good largely because of its early 1970s London setting. I haven't seen this film so not sure that aspect translates.

They should've used chinese crested dogs. First time I saw one I thought it was a mutant rat. Still not 100% convinced
