When me and my friend watched this movie, i knew that he watched it before and just nearly lost his sanity sitting through this...so I did what I had to: Quoting Raoul Duke from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. You’d be surprised how PERFECTLY FITTING most of his quotes would go with the movie. *scene of fish masks in dance bar* “I was right in the middle of a fucking reptile zoo! And somebody was giving BOOZE to these animals! It won’t be long now before they tear us to shreds.” Teens gather to sing against pollution: “But our trip was different. It was to be a classic affirmation of everything right and true in the national character. A gross physical salute to the fantastic possibilities of life in this country. But only for those with true grit.” Godzilla trapped in a pit getting hedorah sludge all over him: “Panic. It crept up my spine like first rising vibes of an acid frenzy. All these horrible realities began to dawn on me. There I was. Alone in Las Vegas, completely twisted on drugs, no cash, no story for the magazine, and on top of everything else, a gigantic god damned hotel bill to deal with. How would Horatio Alger handle this situation? Stay calm. Stay calm.” Godzilla appears seeming to be destructive while trying to ward off Pollution: “I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.” Showing off invention that’ll hopefully stop Hedorah regenerating: “Now this was a superior machine. Ten grand worth of gimmicks and high-priced special effects. The rear windows lit up with a touch like frogs in a dynamite pond. The dashboard was full of esoteric lights and dials and meters that I would never understand.” Godzilla walks away heroically: “There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.” Seriously I could keep this up but you get my point. But my best friend laughed SO much and so loud it was worth it. EDIT: oh! See? Whatd I tell you! 8:38

Going through the Showa-era Godzilla-Flicks these days (thanks to the Criterion-Set) and watched this flick yesterday... and it just might be one of my favourites so far, mostly on account of it having such a different feel and look when compared to all the films that predeced it. Hedorah is a fascinating and unique monster that gives Godzilla a *real* hard time. Also, the fact that it actually has something to say, a message, makes it stand out. The last movie to do this was the 1954-Original with its warnings against the misuse of nuclear power. This time, its pollution and humans destoying the enviroment (still a relevant topic 50 Years later) and the premise of having the two monsters whose origins are connected to these issues fight one another is great. The movie is a little slow, the characters are shallow and mostly forgotten about near the end and the Soundtrack is... weird, but that doesnt really diminish my apprechiation.

This was one of the first godzilla movies I saw, the first one I believe being godzilla vs biollante. I used to watch this movie all the time. It was my all time favorite godzilla film and one of the only ones I owned from the Showa era. This movie holds a special place in my heart with godzilla vs biollante,

Others have already pointed out that Hedorah wouldn't have been a threat to humanity without pollution, so I'll just point to the movie with the *actual* stupid environmental message--Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which warns us that we shouldn't drive species to extinction because they might turn out to be emissaries from another civilization that will return millions of years later and microwave our oceans searching for them, unintentionally killing us. You want "high"? THAT's "high." Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka is treated like God Almighty by some G-fans, but let's face it--he okayed everything from the original to vs Destoroyah. Minya is all on him. Seatopia is all on him. The slashed-to-bone budgets are all on him. He may have been hospitalized during the filming of vs Hedorah, but he brought in Banno to shake things up after Fukuda's entries seemed to be going stale...then went right *back* to Fukuda for vs Gigan, which had a lot of the same elements (cartoons, environmental message, tripping balls) all watered down to that previous level of "been there done that" which Tanaka disliked. Can't have it both ways, boo. Certainly, Flying Godzilla is preposterous, but as Brandon points out the series was already steeped in preposterous at this point, going full kiddie-matinee back in Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster. But vs Hedorah is the first entry in a long time to go full-blown horror on us, with innocent victims writhing in agony as they dissolve under Hedorah's presence. Little Ken witnesses shit that will traumatize him forever, including the death of a major character and apparently the kid's closest human friend. The manga, as usual, was different in an awesome way. In it, Ken's Godzilla toy acts as...I dunno, some sort of summoning totem? It is suggested that Godzilla first appears to fight Hedorah in answer to Ken's prayers in the presence of the toy; when Godzilla is nowhere to be found as Hedorah attacks Mt. Fuji, Ken hurls the toy at the Smog Monster in desperation and suddenly it's *Godzilla* twirling through the air (in place of the flying scene) to body-slam Hedorah into the mountainside. If Spielberg or del Toro shot something like that, it'd win Best Picture.

It may have had a poorly executed messaged, but Star Trek IV was fun :=)

I remember sitting in the car at the drive-in for this movie when I was a toddler. Don't recall which one (or both) of my parents brought me, but I remember the cast-aluminum speaker closed into the car window, being absolutely terrifed when the dude diving was attacked (approached?), and literally the only other part I remember was Godzilla flying...which I thought was the most awesome thing I had ever seen. Probably was, I was only like 2 or 3 years old, I think.

I think this is a highly underrated gem of a movie. One of my childhood favorites. Hedorah is amazing and played excellently by Kenpichiro Satsuma, who would go on to play Gigan in the next movie and then played Godzilla for the entire Heisei series. This is also one of my personal favorites of Nakajima's Godzilla performances. Overall 8/10 movie.

I really miss Brandon's Godzilla vs. Gigan. Looked for it all over the internet. Seems like one of those things that nobody ever thought to reupload. Damn shame. It was one of the funnier ones, at least in my opinion. They are all hilarious though. ;p

The ghosts are probably “kami”, spirits of Japanese ancestors who are connected to nature after death in the Japanese traditional Shinto religion. Just a guess, though.

Have u seen Shin Godzilla? He was created the same way as hadera! Little tadpoles exposed to pollution or radiation and merging together to make one big monster!

I don't know if it's just me but I find the Kenny in this movie to be the least insufferable Kenny in the entire Godzilla franchise. He still is annoying though.

this movie is about the only one I specifically remember seeing the commercial for. I think it was called Godzilla vs The Smog Monster. it was for our local uhf channel WLVI 56. Saturdays 1-4pm for Creature Double Feature. thanks for this review.
