In the Japanese version I saw, Hiro was a med student, so that's why he knew so much about the bacteria. Also, he gives himself up to the detective out of some Japanese sense of duty. The monster sprout from the bacteria that infected them all. The got infected because of a malfunction that happened when Lily-C.A.T. maneuvered the ship to collect the sample and it ended up in the water supply. This water supply was also link to their "cryogenic" pod. Also, the Lily-C.A.T. was not murderous but wanted to prevent the infection to spread back to Earth or something like that. They discovered that a planet's magnetic field would prevent the bacteria from turning them into monster and it's the collective fused-monsters who are incinerated when they are entering the atmosphere of the planet that they will never be able to leave afterward. Lastly, there are 2 cats : one real and one is the computer. So the cat that is eaten is of course the biological one while the other was put there by Weilan-Yutany, I mean the company, to make adjustment to the ship to prevent damage or to overrule the captain and it's crew in case of emergency. It is not evil, just a fail-safe. The thing that bugged me was that the people carrying guns were not members of the crew... That makes absolutely no sense to me... Than the detective takes the gun but no one knows yet he is a police officer... How come the captain allowed that ?!

The original ending in Japanese is quite a bit grimmer and Hiro's (named Jiro in the original) philosophizing makes more sense in that context. In the original, the alien monster begins crying out Nancy and Jiro's names as it burns up in the atmosphere, revealing that at least some part of their crewmates' consciousness lived on in the alien. As the shuttle descends, Jiro remarks that it won't be long before they, too, are overcome by the infection and turn into an alien (this remark isn't in the dub). The "butterfly vs caterpillar" philosophy is Jiro self-soothing that maybe turning into an alien abomination won't be so bad. Once the credits end, the handcuffs - the ones dangling from Jiro's wrist - fall to the floor. He (and presumably Nancy) have been transformed. The cat meowing at the end is the last remnant of the original alien, the only part that didn't burn up in the atmosphere - the cat was the only part of the original crew not seen burning on the shuttle.

One of the qualities I like about some of this old anime is that the characters are realistically proportioned and shaped. They look like a human, not a caricature of one. These more adult stories with realistic characters are my favorite kind of anime. I was watching Saturday Anime back on SciFi Channel and they put a heavily-edited version of Demon City Shinjuku on there and it was FREAKIN' BadA$$!

I saw this in japanese recently and it made more sense: the Lily-C.A.T. was put there by the company to monitor the ship and the crew, to correct mistake made by them and to insure the interest of the company were prioritize over the decision the crew might make. The company makes the best it can with the ship's travel: it has to collect sample and other data from the travel. The sort of geo/pod that was collect fell into the water supply because of a malfunction, not by design, which is why all the crew members are already infected, which leads to them transforming into monsters (there are several of them in the japanese version which fuse - if I recall correctly). There is also a corrosion of the ship, which is why it's so easy for the captain to blow it up. This corrosion is also caused by the alien entities. The main character is a medical student and does not go casually with the detective. Some sort of sense of duty, kind of to honor is dedication. I have seen the same thing in real yakusa trials were they proudly announce there affiliation. Which is how he can explain the legionnaire's disease. The movie reference a real case that happened in real life and it was the A/C system that was at fault. Even though the only two survivors are also infected (like the rest of the crew), they discovered that the magnetic fields of planet will staves of the entity, so that is why they make a run for it in the shuttle. What I do not understand and cannot accept is the fact that there is a shotgun aboard the ship!! That caracter is not a member of the crew, he is not security! Same thing goes with the detective... So why would the captain allows first the moron to bring its shotgun, second allows said moron to walk around freely with a loaded weapon, and third to let the detective grabs it afterward?!?!?

They had the perfect opportunity to have Lily fight the alien, cat vs cat, robot vs tentacle monster, and didn’t take it. Where Lily is Mother and desperately trying to keep blonde girl and deep thoughts mcgee alive, moving them around while the alien keeps developing new ways to get to them. The alien doing freaky shit while Lily uses the appliances onboard to keep it at bay would’ve been fun to see. Oh well.

The eyes of cats do glow, that's nothing special. And social commentary is part of what makes Alien such a great movie. Talking at length seems to be such a prevalent thing in Japanese media that I often wonder if it doesn't get too much for the Japanese audiences. What I didn't get is how the cat becomes a threat. It's a robot, so the alien legionella can't possibly absorb it, and it's in charge of the ship. Is that like in Space Odyssey, where the ship cares so much about the mission that it decides to do it alone, or something?
@helbent4
@helbent4 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that darn CAT doesn't seem to do anything to help the crew. As it can't seem to do anything itself then they are the best chance to contain or eliminate the threat to the ship and the mission. It should be doing everything it can to assist them.

I'm guessing you didn't watch the movie? The cat subplot is basically knocking off Allen's first android and that corporation trying to study alien organism, crew is expendable, deals. The cat is there to ensure the company's interests are maintained without human interference or judgement, messing up with things.

I always thought maybe the cat in Alien was supposed to be there to draw a comparison between Xenomorph nature and human nature, how humans can often be kinder to small animals than they are to other people. Some of the most disturbing accounts of first world behavior I've ever heard came from a prison environment, focusing on one group and contrasting their cruel behavior toward people outside of the group as opposed to how caring and protective they were of a stray cat that the guards allowed them to look after. These people were capable of doting on a kitten right after literally searing someone's flesh off with hot wires, all because the person in question got their group's tattoos as a way to try to appeal to them, not knowing the price he'd pay for getting the all important inking without first getting their permission. Every time I see the Xenomorph and the cat cross paths in the original Alien, I immediately think of these people and how there are real people who are much more cruel and frightening than any Xenomorph ever has been.

No joke, the idea of cryo-hibernation in space movies is an intriguing one. Imagine going out into space for a job, take 50 years flight that, for you, wasn't any more than a year, then back another 50. Two years for you and everyone you knew and loved is gone. Who knows if anyone is around to even remember you. It's a sad thought to be sure... But SPACE AIDS!

I've read fiction that has that, and... it's only rarely shown as actually being common for people to have this as a proper career. Ender's game uses this logic of multi-year trips, and... only a tiny handful of people regularly do deep space travel at all. Which is why having an inter-stellar war was such a big deal. You can't just.... send a fleet to counter-attack as the invaders will have YEARS to attack before you can get there. Maybe they'll have moved on before your fleet arrives?

This film is another one that just traumatized me so I cant forget it. Like many, first watched it in the 90s on the Scifi channel at 2AM. I saw it again 15-20 years later looking for dubbed anime films. Its weird but very good as a horror film with plenty of gore. Its a combination of Alien, The Thing, and Leviathan. One thing not mentioned is that there are actually THREE kind of alien/bacteria as threats in this film. One is the original bacteria inside some the crew. The second is bacteria that morphed to eat metal and is slowly eating the ship. The Third is the shapeshifting monster. So the crew have to worry about dying from the inside, being eaten/absorbed by the monster, or the ship falling apart before they get to a habitable planet. I find it interesting that the one girl who wandered off alone to get a scan to see if she was infected just disappeared without any gore. I think thats called a Gory Discretion Shot trope. Later on you see why you would wouldnt want to see happen to a woman as with the porn-stached detective was UNRAVELED like a ball of string. Do you see how I cannot forget it?

The cat death made me sad, because it was only there for that stupid robot cat duplicate reveal. Honestly would have made more sense and been a lot cooler if one of the human imposters had been the robot instead.

I kind of wish they did Dorohedoro like this. The manga's scratchy art style gave it a dark and gritty look that was more reminiscent to 80s and 90s anime. The CGI in the new one is too damn clean and sterile.

It's funny that the English dub of this includes some of the gang from Robotech, so you can imagine it as a weird Macross and Alien hybrid...with Robotech. Oh, and do Robotech the Movie. It's bad. Then do the good one,. Macross Do You Remember Love, the subtitled version, not the Attack of the Bionoids one.

Wow, what a journey through youtube I have had today. While this movie seemed decent, you mentioned Felidae twice. So I went looking for it, expecting a flaming pile of cat-shaped garbage. But it was amazing! I genuinely had so much fun with the movie, all cat-boning aside. It was like a film noir mystery with Gothic overtones...and talking cats. Then I watched your review of it, which was also funny. I think we ended up making a lot of the same jokes in the end.

Fun Fact: In the Japanese dub of *"Lily C.A.T.",* Nancy Strauch was voiced by Masako Katsuki (who later went on to voice Sailor Neptune in the first *"Sailor Moon"* anime), and Carolyn was voiced by Yoshiko Sakakibara (who later went on to voice Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) in the 1992 Japanese VHS/DVD dub of *"ALIEN").*

There's actually a reason for this. When Lily CAT was originally dubbed into English and released in North America, it was done by the now-defunct Streamline Pictures, whom were notorious for their dub actors talking in run-on sentences, not to mention dumbing down the original scripts of the anime TV shows, OVAs, and movies that they licensed.
