Before Wes Craven gave the world Freddy Kruger, he made "Swamp Thing" (1982), a movie about everyone's favorite big green superhero that isn't the incredible Hulk!

Louis Jourdan, an actor who appeared in classic Hollywood and European movies, played D'Artagnan, Dracula, Count of Monte Cristo and a Bond villain, still manages to be classy despite the quality of the movie.

Fun fact: In the comics, Swamp Thing's wife, Abby, *was* put on trial for crimes against nature . . . in Gotham City. Swamp Thing responded by covering the city in plant life. Batman spent quite a bit of time wondering what Poison Ivy had done this time before running into Swamp Thing and learning the truth. Abby wasn't in jail much longer after that.

And then Swamp Thing died...or at least found his life essence shot out into space, unable to reform on Earth. Unfortunately, Jim Wynorski didn't bother to adapt anything from Moore's run other than the love scene with Abby, so we never got to see Swamp Thing form into a giant monster made up of horrified sentient plant people.

My favorite was The War in Hell with the Black thing that ask the question of what was Evil. Some how I done think that any Movie would ever do that story with the ending. (the End of God?)

yeah the American Gothic arc with the first appearance of John Constantine. He gets Swamp Thing to go around and encounter various horrors like underwater vampires who live beneath the swamp and turn children into more of their ilk, a female werewolf curse that happens due to both the property she and her husband live on and when she gets her period, a movie set near his swamp that uses a haunted plantation and the actors become the slaves, master and mistress also ZOMBIES!

Funny that you keep making all the Hulk references here. Dunno if you missed it in your research, or if you're saving it for the next SwampThing movie review, but Dick Durock actually has a connection to the Hulk. I recall the old 70's Incredible Hulk TV show had an episode titled: "The First". (I think that it might have been 2 parter episode) Wherein, it was about how Bruce Banner (Bill Bixby) discovers that someone else besides him, had become a "Hulk" years earlier before he himself did, but had also been cured of it. That other "Hulk" in this episode.........was also played by Dick Durock too.

My favorite slice of dialog from this film: Adrienne Barbeau and the kid are walking through the woods and pass the crashed jeep. Kid: "What happened to the car?" AB: "Oh....I ran into a tree." Kid: "Must've been one of those hit-and-run kind of trees."

I actually just watched this last night on the DVD with the international cut, I thought it was fun although I agree it didn't play top Wes Craven's strengths and had trouble finding the right tone. I saw the return of swamp thing when I was a kid and loved it, it was campy fun. I also watched the animated series when it first aired, it had a great theme song. Should be interesting to see what the new series on DC's upcoming streaming service is like.

Adrienne Barbeau's breasts! And Swamp Thing was in the film too. Arcane's masks would have certainly helped Darkman! The same 'new age BS' was used in Captain America as well, the serum amplified Steve's positive attributes and made the Red Skull evil. Who would have thought the Toxic Avenger would be a franchise with toys, cartoon and three films.

Fun fact: the Swamp Thing comic introduced John Constantine. For those of you who don't know, Constantine is an English occult detective and sorcerer who acted as a supernatural advisor to Swamp Thing. He eventually got his own comic series called Hellblazer.

The Dr. Arcane transformation scene terrified me as a kid- even though I laugh hysterically at it nowadays. Apparently, the Arcane-Monster was supposed to be a baboon-reptile monster but the lack of budget forced the special effects guy to improvise a "pig crossed with the creature from the black lagoon." I do love Blockbuster Buster's name for it, @Brandon Tenold, "Piggy-Bacca."

12:08 After the "oh shit" I was half expecting him to reach out and break off a small patch of leaves, put it in a glass pipe, and start smoking it. ...THEN say "There goes the neighborhood" in that voice when you're trying to hold it in.

I actually liked this one. Great cast, and Craven has a good way to progress a story.

This movie holds a special place in my heart. It's one of the first movies I ever watched (I was about 3 years old when it came out.) and it has the first pair of breasts I ever saw. God bless Adrienne Barbeau. Speaking of which, the uncut version of this movie is out there if you look hard enough. It just has more nudity but hey, why not?

Well I know at the time of the movies Allan Moore was writing him and it was during one of his more popular runs also, so that might have had some push for the syndication. Allan Moore's run is pretty unique also

In a world filled with over the top super flicks where forced humor and repetitive one liners are all you need to get a full theater, its a breath of fresh air to see this lost gem be brought up again. And just in time for the new series coming out for the streaming service by DC.

Considering how Dr. Holland was trying to combine animals with plants, he's lucky he didn't get turned into Plantimal, another (albeit obscure) comic book monster.

"Talent does what it can; genius does what it must." I honestly thought James Scott Skinner was the first to say that, but apparently, it may have originally been a quote from Robert Bulwer-Lytton. Huh

Eh, the suit in the 89 film looked better. The TV version didn't look too bad either but I felt it was a bit too bulky especially in the neck

This movie looks better through the lens of considering that prior to it, only the first two Superman movies were "good" as far as comic book adaptations went. All other comic-based movies -- which there hadn't even been a lot of yet -- were shit, pretty much. Swamp Thing at least tried to take its source material semi-seriously. Also, this film had NO budget for the type of picture they were trying to make. The producers actually got the character rights and made this movie in an attempt to generate funds enough to produce a Batman movie later on. Which they did -- Mike Uslan was a producer on both Swamp Thing and Tim Burton's '89 Batman.

Again, great review, but I hope you discover the BEST CULT HERO FILM: "The Naked Man," with Michael Rapaport, produced by Ethan Coen, directed by J. Todd Anderson. Amazing film, killed by the DVD player IN 1996. Only on VHS. Please find this film!!

One of the biggest ironies is that the costume for the USA Network TV series was far, far superior to the outfit seen in this movie. Much more massive and intricately more detailed with all sorts of vines threading across its surface, quite comparable to the comics concept. Sincerely, Bill
