But yeah, I think the one responsible here is the one who said "Look! In this studio we have new equipment for special effects! They would look so cool! It is actually a TV play. The play took place in Lenegrad and was adapted for TV later. Of course, they didn't have any good effects or locations.

As a little information, this is not really a movie, it is a made-for-TV-play (not a movie), produced by the Leningrad/St. Petersburg Television. Therefore the effects aren't spectacular (many soviet movies are more about the plot, not the effects or costumes). And the great actor Zinovij Gerth is indeed playing John Tolkien (this is how they credited Tolkien in the opening writing credits) here. He also played General Bum in the 1980s russian TV-adaptation of Mary Poppins. And that one had better sets but this was meant to be a movie, not a play like this one. Funny how you tried to read the cyrillic letters as latin onces. And how you added Eduard Hil into the drarf scene ;) After all, in every soviet movie you will find original songs and dances (I doubt they ever heard the "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" by Leonard Nimoy) And funny Gandalf-line: "After the adventure I will go further. I will send you on that journey. I will have fun and it will be useful for you" Or Tolkien "Imagine how he was scared when he regained consciousness. No soul, unbelievable darkness."

I didn't understand one thing about his misinterpretation of the cyrillic. There is no H in cyrillic and it's usually replaced by the G sound so the hobbit word was a weird mixture of roman and cyrillic?

This could actually be one of the early studio production on Betacam. SECAM countries tended to adopt component studio technology rather early. Doing special effects in SECAM is actually rather hard and at least the KZbin copy I've found lacks the typical PAL artefacts. (however upon closer inspection there seems to be a tiny bit of SECAM fire.)

Hilarious! Brandon, thanks for the review. I was born in Moscow and I have never heard of this movie before, not even once. However, I wouldn't consider this one a "real" movie. It is more of a no-budget stage play presented on tv - and it shows. Why the "storyteller" (the elder guy in the suit) explains so much about hobbits and their physique only to end up with everyone of the same size is beyond me - as well as the glittering-gold Gandalf. The entire production looks like it was shot on a Saturday afternoon using some middle school play stage props leftovers - there are much better Russian fantasy movies out there ^^

@@sigmacademy True, but this is a cheap TV adaptation for kids. Stuff of that quality was also usual outside the Soviet Union - in (back then West-) Germany we had "Lemmy und die Schmöker", a programme that introduced kids to books - in each episode "Lemmy the Bookworm" would read passages from the book and then parts were enacted. And because each week there was a completely different story there was no money to build, say, intricate sets, so instead often greenscreen was used too, especially when the setting was fantastic and couldn't be filmed in a normal street or so. And believe me, back in the 70s that looked as bad as this one here. But we didn't care. For one thing as kids we didn't know that this looked "bad" - there simply were some shows on TV that had this typical greenscreened look and we didn't wonder "why". Today of course everyone can make much better greenscreen effects at home with their phone as a camera, some green cloth and then a (pretty cheap or even freeware) video editing software on the pc to remove all the green from the movie clip and replace it with pictures or a movie. And in a resolution TV folks could only DREAM of back then. :D And - I say that to this day - if the story is good and entertaining, then I can "forgive" a lot of things like effects looking bad or cheap. :) I probably would have liked this Hobbit quite a bit as a kid. Also: Maybe watching stuff on this level even helps developing your fantasy? I mean: Like when reading a book or listening to a radioplay this way of storytelling leaves still loads of work to your mind instead being able to show you everything. Pretty much like watching a play on stage - you clearly see that the set is just painted carton, but if the play itself is written and played well, then that carton WILL become a real castle, at least a little. Doesn't mean people who work on modern movies where they now can show you more or less everything you can imagine due to CGI aren't artists as well, but the focus has changed since the olden days. Back then it was "make believe" and today it's more like "make real". ^^

I have watched this version of Hobbit. It's not that bad, being a low-budget children's tv-play, though it may seem wierd to modern viewers, even here in Russia. I really like that toy Smaug here! The guy who played the narrator, which is called "that asshole" in the video, is actually Zinovy Gerdt, a brilliant actor of theatre and movie. Yes, there was a Halloween store famine in Russia. It lasted 80 years and was called USSR because in Soviet Union, no religion, occult symbolism or fun were allowed and Halloween was definitely all of that in varying degrees. And a symbol of capitalism "rotting" in the eyes of Communism party, while alcoholism was fine. It's always interesting to see reviews of things like that from a point of someone who's from a Post-Soviet country, as I have more context and it sort of like to see people being clueless... A tradition of soviet TV plays (telespektakl's) are pretty much foreign for US and Canada: it was mostly supposed to look like that because it was practically a theater play with one or two takes, literal play for a script and maybe choreography. And budget was rather non-existent on those, so these effects are actually impressive for that budget range and genre. Most TV plays barely had sets.

7:16 technically hobbits are shorter than dwarves so if the dwarves really are that small and gandalf is the same size as Bilbo then gandalf really shrank a lot

Но вот к дракону Смогу в фильме зря Брэндон придрался. Лучший кадр на мой взгляд. Там использовали перспективу что хоббит выглядит маленьким. Ну а дракон хоть и кукольный но вполне каноничный.

В советском фильме сохранилась сказка, потому как и снимали сказку для детей. Ну а спецэффекты... Так ведь режиссер - не Птушко, и фильм - не "Илья Муромец". А вот отджексятина - "руби бабло" - от книги там осталось очень мало, к сожалению До сих пор, не знаю почему сценаристам отджексятины не вручили "Золотую малину". Наверное, отстегнули... ... И кстати в роли Фили снялся Михаил Кузнецов, сыгравший в молодости Федьку Басманова у Сергея Эйзенштейна
