The film is based on a Classical Chinese historical fantasy novel called “The Investiture of the Gods”. It takes place during the rebellion against a tyrant Emperor of ancient China’s Shang dynasty. The author of the novel added gods to the rebel army. The strategist of the army is Jiang Ziya not “Chang China”. The main character of the novel is a god reincarnated as a boy called Li Nezha (the character who looks like Chun Li). Li Nezha is also known as the dragon slayer because he slaughters a dragon. Bruce Lee apparently takes the role of a another god sent to help the rebels with three eyes called Erlang Shen. The emperor’s concubine is called Su Daji. She was historically a beautiful but cruel woman so the author of the novel wrote that she was actually a fox demon disguised as a human.

@@Nik-ff3tu Nah. It’s just that the novel it’s based on has a very long story, one that couldn’t conceivably be told in one movie. That might have something to do with why most of the latter half of the movie is just images flashing on screen.

@@southanime that my friend is Wu Ji. He was a wood cutter who insulted Jiang Ziya when he couldn't understand the sages wisdom. He also mocks Jiang Ziya when he proposes becoming minister. Jiang Ziya predicts he commit murder and die if he goes into town that day, but Wu Ji disrespects him for a third time and ignores his warning. Guess what happens to Wu Ji? Moral of the story: don't mock what you can't understand, don't put other people down for their ambitions, and heed the warning of your elders.

4:37 Chalk this one up to crap translation and bad cuts in the US version. Okay, I'll explain this one on the off chance somebody cares, just this once. First a li'l backstory: King Chou, a fair enough ruler but lewd dude, made comments about wanting to bang the goddess of a temple he was visiting, so the goddess sent three demon sisters (fox, jade lute, pheasant) to seduce him into madness and tyranny, destroying his empire. So that's where those ladies came from. The "embankment" bit is a scheme to have Chou enlist the priest who killed the maneating jade lute demoness*, so her sisters could have their revenge. The loyal elderly minister is friends with the priest and warns him, knowing full well that Chou will slay him when the priest flees. The priest gives the minister a charm in the form of a scripture that will protect him from mortal injury--keeping him alive even after Chou has him cut out his own heart. Naturally, the demonesses immediately realize magic is afoot, so the pheasant demoness ambushes the minister on his way home, posing as a peasant selling "cabbages without hearts." The minister says, "But cabbages cannot exist without hearts!," whereupon the demoness snatches away the charm keeping him alive, sneering "Neither can men!" The minister immediately falls dead. *aw, you left out how the priest tries to sniff her butt and she farts in his face

This movie was (is?) incredibly popular in Europe--the German DVD is called "Tarzerix: The Elephant Policeman" (!!!) and was given a kid-friendly opening theme song which you can find on KZbin. There was also a six-part comic-book adaptation (also titled "Tarzerix" which is apparently the name given to the Bruce Lee character) in Spain. But the (Taiwanese) movie itself is based on the Chinese novel "Investiture of the Gods," which is ONE HUNDRED chapters long. (My English copy had to be printed as two volumes.) It was preposterous to think they could cover even a fraction of it properly in less than ninety minutes. (See also: Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings.) If you like, look up "Investiture of the Gods" on Wikipedia; the article includes brief capsule of stories that made it into the movie (and at least one that didn't). "Story of Chinese Gods" is not even listed in the adaptations of the novel. :(

Okay, after seeing this review, I'm certain there's a second Brucesploitation Animation! I remember years ago regularly renting a videotape of a 'Bruce Lee' cartoon. Years later when the 'Chinese God' DVD came out, I assumed this was the same cartoon. Seeing this review, this is not what I remember, although the end final fight with the tyrant (and the hand-waving) I do remember, making me think the second Bruce Lee cartoon edited some footage from this one. The story from the one I remember was a pretty traditional 'Bruce Lee battles against an evil tyrant' sort of film, defending a village as well I believe. He's a villager and he's looking after his mum who gets attacked at one point. It was in English, and they may have even referred to his character as 'Bruce'. That's all remember. Does anyone else remember it?

yup this animation is based on the novel Fengshen Yanji based on the downfall of the kingdom of Shang by King Zhou who was corrupted by his concubine Dakki(Daji) who was actually a nine tail demon fox in the late 17-16th century B.C the 3 eyed Bruce Lee lookalike is a warrior god known Erlang Shen if you want to watch a decent animation I suggest you watch the anime' Soul Hunter' or the 2016 Chinese movie 'League of Gods'.

In Germany this was marketed completely different. They added a new dub with the Bruce Character (or Erlang Shen) constantly talking - he just never stops mumbling one-liners, really stupid insults or just commenting his own actions. The Movie itself was cut into several VHS-Tapes, marketed as a cartoon-series completely around this one character - including a complete new titlesong where his name was "Tarzerix". The song is kind of hilarious, the refrain was like "Tarzerix the Kung-Fu Hero who never falls on his snout" - well, it rhymes in german... ("Tarzerix der Kung-Fu Held der niemals auf die Schnauze fällt"). Sorry for bad english and greetings from Germany - big Fan over here.

The woman who is a demon looks like a shamsen, a guitar like instrument, so I'm lead to believe she is similar to a japanese spirit which inhabits an inanimate object, like a mirror or umbrella. To see such ghosts, watch Yokai Monsters (1968).

The King has something that makes Hugh Hefner jealous. A swimming pool filled with Booze and BBQ meat hung from trees for insta-food. Complete with nekkid chicks for insta-hump. It is called 酒池肉林 ( Jiu Chi Rou Lin ) in Chinese. Meaning Pool of Wine, Forest of Meat.

Maybe I've watched too much old animation, but I'm much more bothered by the 4:3 cropping than the animation itself. There are so many scenes where active people are either half offscreen, or even entirely offscreen.
