Megafans like Argent, Chaos, and the community at the 17s forums have been asking questions like that for forever. Picking apart just how deep the magic and science intertwine is a big reason we like these books.

I'm afraid of saying this (i've been burned so often maiking these statements) but dang Brandon Sanderson is a chill and cool dude and I'm honored to have read his books before he became mainstream and actually been part of that fanbase that started their book conversations with friends with "Have you read Mistborn?"

Having met the man a couple times at signings and events, he's genuinely great to his fans. When I was a senior in high school, he spoke at my brother's middle school. I "ditched" (with permission) class to go to the event, and, as probably the only actual fan of his work at the event, he gave me an Advance Reader's Copy of Firefight, which was releasing later that year. Its one of the coolest things I own.
